For those of you that have done this, is it normal to need the specific growler for the establishment that you are getting beer from to refill it?

I ask because I was recently in the area of a local microbrew so I figured I would take along one of my growlers to fill up. When I went to get the beer I was told no, they wouldnt fill it because it wasn't their growler.

Sucked for them more than me because instead of spending money at a local place I went to a liquor store up the road, but is this normal procedure for places to require you to buy their growler if you want it refilled?

a quick google search of growler etiquette indicates that your answer depends on which state you are in. There are different laws. For example California and Mass have prohibit breweries from filling any growler that isn't there own.

That being said, some breweries are just ass-hats and refuse to fill anything other than their own just to get the extra $ from consumers.
