Last night, I took(forced) my wife to go see High on Fire, Kylesa, and Torche play the Great American Music Hall in SF. When I heard that three of my favorite bands were going to be playing together, especially at the GAMH, I knew I had to go. My only problem was that everyone I know does not necessarily listen to this stuff, so I was either going to pull the "creepy loner" and go by myself, or force someone else to go with me. Luckily, my wife is always up for the experience, so she wanted to go.
It was eye-opening for her when I was pointing out various members of the bands hanging out in front of the hall before the show, mingling with fans, who were not fawning, screaming, clamoring, and procuring souvenirs. The show was great. We sprung a little extra cash to get the dinner tickets, which meant that we were sitting right against the railing on the balcony directly over the stage. It also meant that we had a nice dinner before the show started, and a cocktail waitress for the duration.
I wished Kylesa had been headlining. They just might be the most original "metal" band out there. Torche was next, and the energy those guys put off is incredible. I haven't seen a band have that much fun playing in a long time. I would describe them as like Foo Fighters, but for straight people. High On Fire crushed the place, most of which had come to see them.
My wife really enjoyed Kylesa and Torche, but I think High on Fire was a little too much metal for her. She had more eye-opening moments when we saw various band members loading out their own equipment and working the merch tables after the show. I explained to her that most of the small independent acts have regular jobs, and touring and recording music is not done out of a desire to own a mansion in Beverly Hills, but because performing is something that they enjoy, regardless of the pay.
In November, I have to pay my dues and go with my wife to see someone named Brandon Flowers. Maybe I'll have some eye-opening moments there.

Brandon Flowers is the singer for a band you've probably atleast heard once or twice, The Killers. I dont know what his solo record sounds like.
This month was
The Breeders
Screaming Females
Superchunk/Jenny and Johnny
I have a ticket for The Blow in November.
This year I've seen Interpol, Muse, The Roots, Chevelle, The New Pornographers (twice), Stars and, if you want to count it, Conan O'Brien.

Taking your wife to see High on Fire is pretty ballsy, sounds like you got a good one there.
Last concert for me was Gojira, As Shadows Fall and Lamb of God opening for Slipknot whenever it was that Volume 3 came out. That one was awesome because I conducted an interview with Jerry from Lamb of God for my college's newspaper that entailed him talking about his bass, insulting the drummer, cursing and then asking if "will you print that?" Also awesome about that show was the fact that Shadows Fall had to try to follow Gojira and almost got booed off the stage. Fantastic.
Now that we're settled into our new house I'm waiting for either Devin Townsend or Tom Waits to make their way over to CT.

Gojira was pretty awesome considering the circumstance, I only really caught what I'm guessing was the last half of their set, but I think they only played for like 15 minutes or so. I've seen SYL but never Townsend by himself, if his solo stuff is anything like the SYL shows it's awesome by default, he really seems like he's having a great time up there.

Fuck. I would have loved to have been at this. I only saw them once but they were incredible.
If I had more money to throw around I'd go. Well, not now considering it would be pointless to walk in. But I'm going to the Court Tavern in New Brunswick to see The Menzingers on friday. I've been to the Tavern once (to see Brian Fallon of Gaslight Anthem/Horrible Crowes) and had a great time. Every clip of the Menzingers live act I've seen has been stupidly good so I'm excited.
In a few weeks I'll be seeing The National at Beacon Theater with The War On Drugs opening. I've seen The National before, in September actually, and they are incredible but I am also excited to see The War On Drugs for the first time. Someone on this board turned me on to them and I am grateful because they are a pretty awesome band.

Saw Butch Walker two or three times in the same week. Always a different show.... always killer. He truly is the new Tom Petty.
And... I saw Amos Lee perform at a brand new venue out on Long Island called The Paramount. GORGEOUS VENUE.... but his actual performance was a bit of a let down. He simply does not interact with the crowd in any way. It aaaalmost borders on autism or asspergers or something. The guy simply doesn't want to connect.
Having said that.... his voice was in perfect form. Vocally.... I give him a 10. Presence?? A solid 1.

They kind of sound like Bob Dylan. The lead singer sings like him and they are very folksy but incorporate some modern ideas into the whole thing.

Real cool and intimate show at Carnegie Hall last night, although the venue is odd for Cornell even if it was a solo/mostly acoustic set.
Great show, but not quite as solid as his Beacon show a few years back. I did LOVE the fact he played a ton of Temple of the Dog, "Seasons" from the Singles Soundtrack and a whole host of other odd or more rare covers on top of a ton of Soundgarten/Audioslave and his solo stuff. He interacts great with the crowd, tells a lot of history for him and the songs and really can pull off venues of this type...yet the venue was just off for the feel regardless.

U2 did the "let a fan play guitar" thing in the 80's. But it wasn't because someone held a sign. It was a regular part of their show. And, yeah... The guy I saw, also sucked.

Greenday used to do this too. They would cover Knowledge and let someone from the crowd play guitar. A buddy of mine at the time got to do it in the late 90s at the south jersey/Philly stop of the warped tour.
