Never going to happen.

The World Cup is held in July. The average temperature in Qatar in July is over 100 degrees daily, and sometimes reaches 115. Football players will die playing 2 matches a week in those conditions.

That was part of their bid: using new cooling technologies to cool the stadia (http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=386206&version=1&template_id=49&parent_id=29).

Believe me, Qatar has the money to spend to make this happen. The only problem will be traffic if they're building on existing sites. I lived near Al-Wakrah stadium and the traffic there SUCKS.

Scroll down to Page 31 to read more about the stadia (http://www.gulf-times.com/mritems/streams/2010/9/14/2_385880_1_255.09.10.pdf).

Sounds like water taxis are a big part of their traffic plan, according to the video.

If they build outside of Doha, then yes it shouldn't be a problem. I've been to Al-Khor, north of Doha, and there's a lot of room to work with up there. Same thing with Al-Wakra which is south of Doha. The big attraction down there is Sealine Beach Resort.

Also, Qatar has a bunch of stadia and housing they built for the 2006 Asian Games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Asian_Games) so it's not like they're unprepared for hosting the World Cup.

Qatar is more liberal with a high regard for human rights. They still have their quirks, but nothing like Saudi Arabia, etc.

You can drink there, but it would probably not be wise to walk down the street with a flask.

first of all shouldnt it be part of the application to already have stadiums in place ??

i know that it creates a shit ton of jobs and boosts the local economy but look at south africa already a few months later and now what ??

thats what the new meadowlands should have done to the outside instead of that disaster they did build. i bet that (with a lot of money) that could be added to any stadium over an offseason. that really is nice and makes a statement. nice games will look incredible and screams nyc (NJ)

they would also make a ton more in parking for all the jerkoffs who wanna tailgate and watch the game on the side of the building

Exactly. They sell booze in the hotels and there is an alcohol distribution center in Doha for the expats. It will be like it is in Dubai -- the Westerners can drink but they'd better be mindful of local customs. Like the Mayor in "Animal House" said: "I don't want no drunken riots in my town."

They already do since they hosted the Asia Games back in 2006.

Part of the plan is to make these new stadia modular. After the World Cup is over, some of the stadia will be disassembled and donated to developing countries.

Damn, they love their football - what do they do with all of those stadiums after the world cup is gone?

Qatar will dismantle most of the stadiums post-world cup and move them to developing countries. Russian stadiums will be used by the local club teams.

I'm not hoping it fails, but when the FIFA technical report for the country's bid says that heat is a "potential health risk," I listen. Have you tried running for 90 minutes in 106 degree heat?

i meant are you serious about not knowing they can cool stadiums? yea running in 106 is tough, but it wont be 106 in the stadium. What i was commenting on is you seeming like you dont think its possible to cool a field down.

I know they say they can do it. I also know that they will be the first ones to try to do it. Count me skeptical until I see a working design.

So all the applicant countries have to spend hundreds of millions of dollars building stadiums only to lose the bid at the last minute?

Those stadiums are amazing. I'd love the see the concept videos of the other applicant countries, especially the USA.

Qatar was the only Arab nation to have relations with Israel. An Israeli Trade office was opened in Doha in the late 90s but was closed after the Gaza attacks. I believe it still remains closed.
