The Cohen brothers are doing a period piece western starring Jeff Bridges with an eye patch? Fuck to the yes.

I heard it's not so much a remake, but based on the original movie. John Wayne's version is one of my favorites, but I am looking forward to their take, because those guys make-um good moving pictures.

I will never watch a Coen Brothers movie ever again even if you paid me while jerking me off in the theater and feeding me anything I desired. They are the most overrated directors/producers/writers in the history of Hollywood.

Sorry! I appreciate the love but on this situation I guess we will disagree before we can start the argument.
I think its because they fooled me too many times. I was looking forward to A Serious Man and I was disappointed. No Country for Old Men was good til they didnt give me an ending which pissed me off because without the ending it never explained the rest. The Big Lebowski is too fucking weird same with raising Arizona. I just think they try so hard to be artistic and weird that they actually take away from their concept and stories.
I will admit I loved Fargo. Fantastic movie which deserved all the awards it received.
Im sure there are plenty of things I like you will think are awful?!

And to sort of slightly correct a post from above: it's not a remake of the John Wayne movie, it's a new adaptation of the original novel. The John Wayne movie greatly departed from the novel.

It took me a couple of viewings to get into Barton Fink. I think in a lot of ways it's one of their most personal and most autobiographical movies.
I've never been a big fan of The Hudsucker Proxy. It just seems too much of a riff on old '40s screwball comedies, with no real point to all the nonsense. And Jennifer Jason Leigh just annoys the fuck out of me.

That was the one with Jennifer Jason Leigh? That's the movie I was thinking of NOT Barton Fink. I've never watched either of them all the way through.

My guess is that it'll be most like No Country for Old Men (of course), but with more humor.
No Country, though, is a surprisingly funny movie, especially on repeated viewings.

That preview looks like it follows the original movie pretty closely. I can tell right now Matt Damon's fake mustache (and probably sideburns) are going to be a distraction for me while watching this.

I thought it was OK. Great acting, obviously, but a real "whatever" story. Also, the ending:
It's like they took the one point in all of their lives where the ending could be sad. Why go so far into the future and end the movie? The movie could have just ended after the adventure ended
And what was this movie? For the most part, it was an adventure film that probably could have been pg-13. Why did they have to make parts of it so gory? It just seemed pointless.
I liked it, definitely worth seeing, but at the bottom of the list for my favorite Coen Brothers films.

It's a good movie, but nowhere near the Coen Brothers better films, for me. It might crack a top 10 list of Coen films, which is pretty good for any flick.

Really? It is amazingly stupid how they rate films. So if you show nudity it's rated R, but show people getting their fingers chopped off it's PG-13? Insane.

I think you have to look to the book, which is a young adult novel and full of a lot of humor, and then has these violent shocking interludes. You always get it through the eyes of Mattie Ross, I think the audience understanding she is in more danger than she realizes or lets on endears her to you, and shows you how strong her character is. Rooster isn't the only character with True Grit, you find that Mattie does too, and thats how they form a bond.
Now, the ending:
The book and the original movie share the idea that the old west is sortof dying out, and Rooster doesn't fit in this new world. They dont show it as much in the movies, but in the book Rooster is nearly considered a criminal himself by the court, and it looks like it wont be too long before they stop tolerating his actions. He winds up in the wild west show at the end with other relics of the old west. Mattie hasn't seen him since she was bitten by the snake. It's almost as if he knows to die before she can see him diminished, Rooster remains the unspoiled spirit of the old west to her.
Now the new movie cant really do the same thing. What better way to make your point about the old west then cast the greatest cowboy in one of his last roles? So the Coens version focuses on how the temperment of Mattie and Rooster makes them special people, who will achieve much, but also makes them hard to live with, hard to get along with. The price of their True Grit is being alone. Even from eachother. I'm paraphrasing and I cant remember who said it originally, but they said that a man who has a family gives hostages to the world. These are two people who cant achieve their best tied to other people, and you see the reality of that.

I thought the girl was spectacular in her role and I laughed every time they said Damon's characters name. It was a pretty decent movie, nothing to go crazy over but def worth watching.

Even more insane, the G-rated version of the original has that scene as well as the hangings. The original in 1969 was rated "Mature" and later re-edited to be a G, but those scenes were kept in.
Even more more insane, 1969 was the same year that Midnight Cowboy was given an X rating.

Loved this movie but just like, i think g-baby said, it seemed very family friendly and accessable which most coen brother's movies aren't. I don't know what it was but something about it just didn't seem like a coen's movie to me. I thought the dialogue was great, the acting was fantastic on all counts, and there were some really amazing moments but, something about it just didn't resonate with me like their other movies have. I wonder how this one will stack up against the rest of their films given a few years time.

Saw it last night and there were many moments in my theatre where everyone was laughing. Great movie - loved the original. Is it just me or did Rooster sound like Carl from Slingblade? Well acted and cast.
In the original, LaBoeuf was kind of a goody goody but in this - he was down right douchy. I liked this interpretation better.

2 moments to consider.
The pony buying scene was straight-up Lebowski - replacement rug scene.
The cutting the hanging man down from the tree scene was stark and funny in a VERY Coen's way.
I respectfully disagree with you. I found it to be a film clearly made by the brothers Coen.

Agreed. I loved it, just saw it for the second time today. My favorite image was of the horse galloping back to the store to save Maddie with the same camera angle of the ground being trod upon when Rooster was carrying her later, scene clinched when the lantern light is cast. Favorite line when Mattie, looking up at the hanging man, says she cant recognize him by his boot soles
Bear guy was very Coen, totally off kilter
Damon's performance grew on me, the I could have kissed you in your sleep line was a little creepy
Also, loved hearing Iris Dement's angelic, twangy voice at the end
In conclusion, nothing beats a theater that serves real self-serve butter for popcorn like Cinema Arts Theater does.

when they first show him sitting in her room i was thinking this is very pedophilic and the dialogue just added to it

Just saw this today, and it exceeded my expectations. Having just seen Tron2 before Christmas, Bridges' versatility is pretty amazing. I never read the book, nor did I see the John Wayne version.
I also found it to be a very Coen film. The Choctaw territory felt like it was on a different planet. The emulsification of humor and seriousness was brilliant. I liked how the dialog avoided the use of contractions, which I assume is historically accurate. The performances were great.
Ethan and Joel are Brolin across the Bridges and standing on the welcome Matt of the Oscars! A ghe.

Hilarious.
I thought the film was excellent and Hailee Steinfeld was just amazing as Mattie. She really did command each scene she was in. I look forward to seeing this on DVD as I can put on the subtitles of Cogburn in the beginning of film. Then LaBoeuf f's up his tongue and Tom Chaney sounded terrible too... they all had some kind of speech impediments! No matter, really excellent and the other standout was Barry Pepper as Ned Pepper.

I was thinking about this theme and it's interesting that out of all the leads, only the child was well-spoken and articulate. There's either some deep meaning to it, or adults just had fucked up grills back then.

The theme of New West vs. Old West. I'd say Mattie is the bridge between these two worlds. I took Rooster to be the Old West, he shoots down criminals b/c it's the 'right' thing to do. The New West puts him on trial and asks him to defend his 'right' action. I figure that Mattie is the only example of someone from the New West, she is well-learned, who has some "true grit'.
