View Full Version : Need a good cooling pad/fan for my laptop

Last night my comp shut down twice because it overheated. I usually just prop it up with my wallet so the laptop won't touch the surface of my table.

I tried getting a cooling pad with a fan but it was defective (the fan worked but was broken so it was really loud). Today I bought a "cooling mat"; the inner crystals turn to a cooling gel when it's warmed, thus cooling the computer. My comp is just warm so the crystals are still crystalized.

Can anyone recommend a good laptop fan for less than $30? Amazon links would be appreciated.

A friend has THIS ONE (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Belkin-Laptop-Cooling-Pad/9203344), and it works fine.

That's what we had. Maybe I should give it another try. I just want it to be quiet.

Yeah-- this crystal thing is bullshit!!

The reviews say these are quiet. And you can trust Newegg.

I could be and am probably wrong but don't those things use the usb port to power the fans thus making the laptop hotter?

I use this, it keeps the laptop propped up and allows for some air to flow. Have you tried cleaning out your laptop a little instead of using compressed air and blowing dust out of the laptop try a vacum so that way you can suck dust out of it.

The cheaper ones do. But the cooling far outweighs an additional heat from the USB being used. A friend had an old laptop that would overheat after about 20 minutes. It could run all day on the pad.

I had a cooling fan that I got I forget what brand it was but I paid probably around $35 for it and I'm pretty sure it didn't help cool the laptop at all. I like that cushion thing I have now.

I have a laptop fan (Belkin is the brand name). It's fine, but it can be a little loud. I got it at Staples and it wasn't very expensive. I wouldn't recommend it unless it's a really good deal. It will do the job fine until you can get something better. Good luck!

The crystals in the pad are melting BUT the bottom of the laptop is getting hot. The $20 pad I bought isn't working.

I'll try again tomorrow. I will now prop up my comp with my wallet so air can circulate under my comp.

if your computer is getting that hot there is something wrong. Might be time to get a new one but I wouldnt use it if its melting things!

Not necessarily. It's a laptop. They shouldn't be left on for long periods of time, and hers is only about a year old. It also had an internal fan problem in the past. It's NOT time to replace it! The "melting things" issue is due to a crappy cooling product she purchased. Laptop cooling pads work great. She just needs to get one that isn't loud.
