Ok so heres the scenario.
As of right now i own a 36 inch non HD tv. It fits into a built in space next to my fireplace. So 36 inches is the maximum width I can accomodate. Even that will be snug but I cant go any larger and cant put the Tv anywhere else in the room. place is professionally decorated and thats a non budge thing.
I spent plenty of time TV watching. Sports movies and shows I like. I scan Tivo pretty often to pick movies to record. So I use the Tivo service well and dont really like the Cable DVR service.
At present I have combo TiVo box with a DVD player built in. The Tivo Box has a lifetime subscription to TiVo service that I dont have to pay anymore for. 50 or80 Gig recording capacity but I dont think it will accomodate HD So replacement is needed. The available space is pretty snug as the picture will show.
I also subscribe to cable with all the channel packages it has a box that sits on top of Tivo Box
I Have cable and am not going to switch to sattelite. I have a home computer network and could tie that in to the system for the Netflix and streaming from the computer but dont know how to do this yet.
The system is hooked up to surround sound system right now and that should suffice since I really dont use it much anyway

So suggest what I should upgrade to with in these limitations. I would say I have an umlimited budget on this if I can hide the cost from my wife and its for my 50th Birthday So the skys the limit

just wait for the picture to go out then get a new tv,upgrading a perfectly good tv without an HD signal is a waste

Ive got carte blanche to get anything I desire but the space is the only limitation. HD is available if I want to get it.

then keep the tv and add a projector with an automatic screen,10 foot is much better than 36 inches

I'd say to hunt around for 120 Hz 1080p 37" LCD (the horizontal measurements on some units may be just shy of 36"). You probably won't find too many in stores, but they are available online. Some models offer onboard Netflix support.
I'd throw a PS3 into the mix too (Blu-Ray player, Netflix streaming).

Vizo makes a decent priced TV and they are good, I've had mine for a few years now and haven't had any problems with it at all. As far as media streaming you have tons of options. If you want to make it easy and keep it simple I would check out the new Apple TV that's coming out it's only $99. Other then that there is Roku (http://www.roku.com/) they make a decent priced set top box. If you going to do blu-ray I would look into a PS3 since it also does Netflix and you can watch videos over a network and even play games if you want to. PS3 seems to be a good deal since it's not that expensive and it give you all the things you would get from any other set top box plus the ability to play games.

from the look of that picture you can throw out that tv stand and put a bigger tv on the wall right behind that unit. This way you get rid of that bulky tv stand and can actually get a bigger plasma/lcd tv. If you were to get a lcd tv to fit in that same stand you might have to go with a 32" tv not a 37" because lcd tvs are wider then tube tvs, but tube tvs have more height.

knowing the dimension of the space will be a lot easier.
Saying your tv is 36" is only measured diagonally. So the width of the space is not 36" so that might limit you to size. As that tv you have is 4:3 aspect ratio. New HD tvs are 16:9 apect from get go.
So a 32" TV now might be the same width as that tv you have now.
Also as for people saying the PS3, i wouldnt recommend as the TV i linked you has Vizio Internet Apps on the TV (look into it) But if you wait you can get a smaller TV that will do 3D and THEN get a ps3 since it is so versatile. (it can now play 3d blu-rays)
As for Blu-ray...its up to you. You could probably get by with a Upscaling dvd player. and use the Netfliz for your HD viewing movies to save you more money.
Sizes below 42" are of neglegable difference in 720p and 1080p. As for 120hz to 240hz, im unsure.

I guess if you want to watch tv in pitch black constanly, have less life than a led tv, has a low contrast ratio compared to even CCFL LCD tv's compared to LED tvs it is stupid to have a projector unless you want washed out black or non 1080p.
I mean if 720p is sufficient for poor old eyes then i suppose it aint bad.
50,000:1 for projectors..high-end $3,000+ (which im guessing/hoping you didnt spend that much)
10,000,000:1 for a vizio led tv.
your blacks might as well be gray.

lol, your so old.
For 1 I didnt know wal-mart sold projectors, but you do...hmmmmm?
the websites I get my information from are from manufactures.
If you are not aware of Vizio or Optoma (http://www.optomausa.com/) then your not to knowledgable.
I also visit http://www.avsforum.com/
Why dont you just post op your Model and Model # of your projector.
Im pulling these numbers off of a Optoma HD8600 - lamp life 3,000 hours.
Vizio XVT553SV lamp panel life - 50,000 hours.
Projectors are not the end all of Tv's. They have great downfalls.
I did however find this PowerLite Home Cinema 8500UB Projector (http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/Product.do?sku=V11H337020&BV_UseBVCookie=yes) that has a CR of 200,000:1 which still seems week to 10,000,000:1. The lamp life is 4,000 hours too. and it only costs $2,099.
I would not recommend a projector with any room that has a window.

thats whats wrong with you kids, you dont do your own research, you google search and take other peoples opinions as your own, thats why spy reports are just what people see on CNN or SPORTSCENTER,its not really your fault, you grew up that way, original thinking and common sense have left the building.here's something for you to google, since i know you wont try to use your own perspective,if tvs are so great then why do movie theaters use projectors?i have more but i dont want you googling all day,i'm sooooo glad i'm no longer long enuff to know it all and can see the advantages of doing my own research, now go cut and paste some more material and put up links to other peoples salesmanship

Uhm, that s what is there for. It not fault you are trying to ignore technology

here's something for you to google, since i know you wont try to use your own perspective,if tvs are so great then why do movie theaters use projectors?
are you serious? Due to the dimensions of the room that theaters use, they NEED a projector. They dont make TV's large enough for rubes to sit with other rubes in a smelly room. Assuming that LED tvs are getting bigger and technology is getting better, once they can make LED tv's big enough for theaters like that they will use them if they are not out of business by then. One would be the life of the led screen would pay for itself over time. Heat output from the led screen might be significantly lower than a huge lightbulb burning. Possibly also using less energy then a projector. No google needed there gramps.
i have more but i dont want you googling all day,i'm sooooo glad i'm no longer long enuff to know it all and can see the advantages of doing my own research,
Why dont you post up what model projector your running so i can google it
now go cut and paste some more material and put up links to other peoples salesmanship
Manufacturer websites are there for a reason dumb ass. Its not my fault i made you feel insecure with your shitty projector that you have to try pulling shit like that.
Also another thing. You dont recommend people prejoectors with out knowing the dimensions of rooms

Hahaha thanks for making his point. Next time you go to a theater count the windows, and also see if you can get a price on one of their projectors (about a quarter million btw).
Contrast ratio is also a big deal. There is no way that a device which is beaming light can give a true black. The best it can do is give a darker grey which might look black next to vibrant colours. Even and LED edgelit TV will outclass a projector in a similar price range. If we even start comparing LED matrix TVs it's game over. And that's not google that science talking. If you have an LED matrix then for deep blacks you would just turn single cells off (can't get blacker than no light).
Oh and that little Jap company only makes some of the best TVs around. I know because I've compared multiple screens being fed the same input and the Vizio outclassing everything in it's price range and only getting comp from the much higher end Samsungs and LGs.
You can say what you want but Mexi knows his tech.
