A question for everyone:
You are a sit-down restaurant with a 5 dollar lunch special. With soda, the total bill is 7.50. Service was very fast, and the waitress re-filled you soda 3x and gave you free fries. What do you tip her?

Wow, 2 endorsements of a 66% tip. I would've just gone with an even $10 for everything.

mitigating: chain restaurant, and the place was nothing special, just not busy

I always go by a delivery + tip for these types bills (diners/cheap chains). If you go 20% it's too little and they don't get a tip to match their effort crowded or not. I find that lazy times in the day I usually get shitty service, so when I get good service, I at least throw down a fiver. If I kind of hang out and catch up on work email and shit, I make sure to up it even more if they keep my water/coffee filled up and check in time to time.

I gave three, and here's my reasoning:
Without the "special", the meal would have been 10 bucks, probably. 20% on that is 2 bucks. So I gave a 30% tip on the regular cost of the meal.

To me, unless you just had a coffee or a beer, sitting down at any diner/rest means you at least give $5 bucks. Just bc you order a salad and water makes ur bill low, doesn't mean you havent' taken up their time and table. I think you went a little low, but I usually tip very well for everything. I just don't see what a 2 buck dif would mean to a wallet.

i woulda left a 5.
The waitresses, unless you order a ton, do about the same amount of work for someone getting something cheaper as they do someone gettin something thats 20 bucks. You cant totally go on bill at that point

I would have given $5 especially if you plan on going back there. Servers remember the people who they serve. You don't want to be known as bad tip guy you never know if they will fuck with your food, just saying.

Agreed. Unless you've worked at a restaurant you have no clue how much those people do for your lazy, judgmental ass.

How about the free fries? She hooked you up and go you 3 re-fills. Plus if you go there again.

I wouldve dropped a 5 spot. $12.50 total for lunch is a pretty good deal, especially if you had good service.
Just because a restaurant is slow doesnt guarantee that by the way. Usually its the opposite. Employees have time to bullshit and sometimes forget their tables.

Apparently, the free fries are part of the deal, it was a Johnny Rockets.

So you're saying it should have been a $2 tip and a conditioning test?

I would have left $5. I tip my eyebrow wax lady $10 on $25. You never want to fuck around with the eyebrow wax lady, she can end your life with one fell swoop of wax.
Side question - we go to Mongolian BBQ where you serve yourself and the guy cooks it right there. The owner brings you your soda, as well as a soup (you don't get to pick, same soup every time). How much do you tip? I leave 20%... but it is technically a buffet

I'd rather tip a server than the owner.

Yeah, the fact that he is also the owner makes me think I can forgo the standard 20%. Plus the only thing you are ordering is your drink... you get the soup but its the same soup every time.

Ok, our office got some 10$ gift cards to a local chain watering hole. The 10$ pretty much covers every lunch item and with the tax, the total out of pocket is never more than 1 or 2 dollars. What's the proper tip on essentially a free lunch?
The food isn't that good, the service is not bad.

Are you saying the restaurant gave them out or your company bought them? I'd give more if it was from the restaurant.

I am also terrified to undertip my hairdresser. Another person who can do a lot of harm out of spite. I tipped $35 on $140 and still am worried. I just moved and this is a new place, so now I've probably set a precedent where if I DON'T overtip, there will be a problem.

That's REALLY overtipping. $30 would have been generous.

I panicked. God dammit. What happens next time when I tip $28 and do a flat 20%. I hope they don't remember. My problem is, when they let you add the tip to the credit card slip, I always easily just do 20% and write it in. Once I have to actually hand cash to someone, I ALWAYS end up overtipping. This salon lets you charge the service but you can't add on the tip. I am going to bring exact amount of cash next time since I know how much it will cost.
They also accidentally ran my card for $65 instead of $165 and I told them when I saw it.

I'd have given the $2.50 just to get it to $10.
I consider myself to be more than generous when tipping so unless there was a reason to go above and beyond, and in your quick synposis that doesn't seem to be the case, I wouldn't have.
If a freebie beer or food item had been given then I'd have factored that into the equation.

Thats a pet peeve of mine too. When I work in Philly I dont even allow anyone underage to sit at my bar.
In NJ they are allowed but I dont usually have to deal with it at the place Im at.

Clarification: We were in the bar "area" with the booths, not the "actual" bar.

If some waitress is giving you dirty looks and at the end of the night you leave her more than 13 cents and a Post-It that says "Suck an ass pipe," then you are one schmucky bastard.
I panicked. God dammit.
Don't sweat it. They're going to pamper you good now!
