"Broadcast Networks Aired Cartoons in the '80s Before cable TV, allocating time for children's programming on broadcast networks was at a premium. In the '70s and '80s, there were essentially five networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and PBS. Consequently, these five networks had to cater to the tastes of all people. As a rule of thumb, networks aired children's programming in times when adults did not want to watch TV.

For this reason, cartoons were syndicated during weekday afternoons in the hours after children arrived from school and before adults arrived from work. Cartoons also appeared on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

For anyone who remembers the paramount of Saturday morning cartoons, they can keep those memories of childhood dear in their hearts along with other great relics from the '80s including parachute pants, Pogo balls and saying "Have a nice day!" because Saturday morning cartoons are gone for good on broadcast networks."

I watched in the 70's and early 80's. Can't remember my favorites right now. Huckleberry Hound Show replays maybe.

Did you watch them? What were your favorites?

Well I might not have been watching the shows in the 70s but i just realized that all the shows I watched growing up are now on TV Land along with the good classic shows.

I remember right before the fall season, the Philadelphia Inquirer TV section would have a huge chunk dedicated to the new cartoons coming up in the fall season. For years that was my bible, figuring out the schedule I would watch the shows. This was before VCRs, so I had to pick and choose carefully which cartoons I would watch.

I feel bad that my kids will never know the excitement that we would get waking up on Saturday mornings...

Whenever I bring these two shows up in conversation, no one seems to remember them:

I thought that Eek the Cat was on the wrong channel, the wrong time of the day and at the wrong moment in time. The humor was quite expansive and fun. It would have made a better late 90s Cartoon Network series or a current-era Adult Swim-type show. They had really fun cultural references (like the gags involving Sharky getting a rap career (Shark Doggy, Doooooooooog!) or the episode where Eek and Sharky were Vincent and Jules from Pulp Fiction) or the references to Eek's girlfriend's appearance ("She's so.... fat." "Really?")

Eek the Cat Fun Fact: The creator of Eek the Cat was also responsible for the character designs for the original "Press Your Luck" Whammy.

I would throw the following shows into the mix:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XR_hpdVuEug?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XR_hpdVuEug?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Muppet Babies

I have a weird fact about "The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show." The show was discontinued after only two seasons in spite of the ratings because Charles Schultz had a sort of contractual agreement with CBS since after his first few Peanuts specials that the programs had to be animated at a certain level. He actually thought that limited animation was garbage and was worried that the quality of the material would degrade below a certain level.
