So I'm killing time before Hard Knocks and Food Network is playing "Throwdown" with Bobby FLay, featuring a BBQ dude from South Jersey.
I love BBQ, so I go on the guy's site and read up on his schedule, and he's going to be in Wildwood in September, so I was getting all hyped up to go down and check him out.
Then as the credits roll, they showed a title card "In Memory of Butch Lupinetti" - dude died two weeks ago and Food Network was showing the rerun in tribute.
Fucking AWFUL.
Second time that shit has happened. First time was a Dinner Impossible block party where the young dad who organized the block party got mowed down by a drunk driver.

i thought this was going to be about how bad the food network has become, an entire channel of shitty reality shows and cakes no one wants to eat.
get FIOS, watch the cooking channel. they are what food network was when it 1st started.

I have the cooking channel. I saw Food Jammers. I promptly ended my relationship with Cooking Channel.

there was a string of documentaries i watched with my wife, and each had an epilogue that let us know the adorable protagonist had died since the completion of the movie

Cooking Channel is also the same company as Food Network, so really you don't stick it to Food Network at all by watching Cooking Channel.
The same thing happened to me with Bill Hicks though, the first time I had ever heard about him was that documentary about his life they used to run on Comedy Central all the time when it first launched.
Food Network has stepped up its programming too. Chopped, 24 Hour Rest. Wars, Food Truck Race are all solid new shows, you had one of the better seasons of Food Network Star, October will see the return of Next Iron Chef. Aarti Party looks promising, they still make Good Eats and Iron Chef America.

good eats has become unwatchable. the 1st 20 mins he doesn't cook or do anything except play with sock puppets. if you go back and watch season 1 and 2, he cooks and teaches at the same time. now it is just preachy bullshit.
i know both are owned by the same company, I just think if you actually want to learn how to cook you cant watch food network anymore

This seems to be a new strategy in cable: turn the big, flagship station into bullshit, just showing reality shows over and over, then have a smaller station that has the programming you used to have.
It's happened with The History Channel, which has started showing pretty much just dumbass reality shows and bullshit about 2012 being the end of the world. So now there's the Military Channel, which shows all the old black and white film of Hitler's ass getting kicked you used to watch The History Channel for.

remember when TLC was The Learning Channel and they used to play it in schools? now its all about babies, weddings and cakes, midgets, and the babies from midgets who jump out of wedding cakes
the real learning channel is now the Science Channel. lets see how long that lasts...

AMC is bizarre: they've given up showing classic movies to show the worst shit of the past 20 years or so over and over, but at the same time, they've given us two of the highest-quality shows on TV in the past few years, "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad".
It's like their programming is either utterly brilliant or shit.

It seems like the pattern is this: a channel has a show that's outside its normal range of programming that's a hit, and they change the whole damn channel to match. A perfect example is Bravo: it's the arts channel, showing things like documentaries on artists and classical music concerts. Then they put on "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", and suddenly every show on there is some gay guy telling someone how to dress. They went straight to hell.
It's really kind of happening between broadcast and cable as well: as networks like NBC and CBS fill their schedules with reality show shit, increasingly scripted shows are going to cable channels like USA or TNT.

See SciFi...erm... Syfy.
The same Network that gives us Farscape, BSG, Stargate, and Eureka also gives us Haven, Ghost Hunters, and the Mega-Something vs. Giant-Whatever movies.

As a nice wrap up to this thread, Butch's family continued making BBQ, and they are currently at the NJ BBQ Festival in Wildwood. I visited their booth and had their ribs, and I also met his daughter and wife. Very nice people, and the food was frigging OUTSTANDING.
