View Full Version : I'm tired of being in pain

First, let me say that there are people who are in greater pain than I am and because of that I feel kind of like a pussy. I understand it's all relative, but still.
I've been on meds that are supposed to help control nerve spacity such as neurontin (gabapentin) which didn't do anything. So I went on tegretol (carbamazepine) which also didn't work. So I finally went to my doctor and got put on klonopin (clonazepam) which worked the best out of the three, though I think it just had more to do with my panic attacks rather than the pain I'm in.
Now, marijuana does help get rid of the pain. I don't really smoke and I know that it just became legal in New Jersey and I would be eligible for it. But that's not until October and who even knows if it will be all set up by then.
Are there other things I should discuss with my doctor for my pain that I'm simply not aware of? I'm kind of lost at this point. I'm thinking my best bet at the moment would be to maybe up the doseage on the klonopin (I'm at a 0.5 mg now) and seeing if that would help since it has shown to be the most effective.
I'm just kind of lost and I'm tired of being a 22 year old guy who hurts when he puts on a shirt or when he hugs someone he loves.
And for the record, I feel so blessed to be how I am right now. Everything with my condition is as good as I could hope. There are so may others who are so worse off and I feel guilty wanting to stop my pain when I know others are dealing with so, so much worse. It just sucks.

I would see if you can get a referral to a Pain Management doctor from your primary doc. They were the only people who could me control the pain when I severely injured my back. I was on neurontin for a while, and lyrica worked better for me (for nerve pain). Pain Management docs specialize in treating pain in a variety of ways and would probably have a lot of different solutions for you.

I was prescribed both of them and they did nothing. I have an expired bottle of Tegretol that just makes me kind of sleepy.
The thing is, I hate asking my doctor about pain meds because I feel like a drug addict when I know I'm not. I need to stop thinking that way. I called today and left a message about increasing my dosage of Klonopin which has shown some help.
Pot helps a lot too. I talked to my doctor about that as well. He had the attitude of, 'we don't knwo if it does anything to the actualy disease or if it just masks the pain, but if it helps who cares'. I'm looking forward to October. I hope.

have you considered massage therapy as a form of pain management. It helps relax the nervous system and help reduce pain, as well as increase circulation of body fluids, releaes toxins and is known to help depression and anxiety. Not sure where you are, but I could recommend licensed massage therapists that may be able to help out

About a year ago my girlfriend at the time bought me a massage at Massage Envy. It definately helped, but it's expensive to keep going back, even with the plans they offer. Unfortunately, I only have a part time job at the moment so I don't have the money to do that.
But it did help a lot. And I've been itching to go back. They had a person who specialized in working with people with MS, so it's good.

You can get good discounts with this thing called Grouppon or something like that. Maybe someone can help me out here. My GF used to use that. You buy a bunch at a discount rate.

Do you have insurance? I was able to get it covered as part of pain mgmt under insurance. Unfortunately massage just hurts me more.
I also know several people who had success with acupuncture. A good Pain Management clinic will have all of these options available, and will be able to offer them to you along with better meds. Just don't feel offended when you have to play by their very strict rules, my first visit I was drug tested and had to sign a lengthy contract saying I would only get pain meds from them, only fill them at a certain pharmacy, etc. I was a little put off by it at first, but my doctor now knows I'm not some sort of junkie so it's not bad.
For short term pain relief until you figure something else out, nothing works better than a good old fashion strong opiate.

I was on Klonopin to help me sleep at night, but I definately needed more to get me to the point where I could really rest. It also helped me during the day when I was hurting more than usual. I asked my doctor if I could up my dosage, but he said no. I understand that Klonopin is addictive, but I'm not the kind of person to get hooked on stuff. And honestly, I never abused it. At most I took three pills, and only if I was in a lot of pain. It helped, but I'm kind of back to where I was before.

Thats why you need to get into pain management. They are not as apprehensive about writing those type of scripts. I went through hell with my primary doctor, she never ordered the right tests for me, and said "I'm not writing you any more opiate scripts" while I could not get off the couch from pain. I went to pain mgmt and they got the right tests done and found out my back was totally screwed, and got me on meds so I could function.

This. I was going to a generic Ear Nose and Throat doctor for my deafness/tinnitus, he offered no solutions, only told me that I was going to continue going deaf, and continue to hear the buzzing. I finally switched to a neurologist (my problem is nerve damage) and while I'm still going deaf they at least offered options that help manage the tinnitus to the point that it's tolerable most days, because I'm not a rare case for them. It's all about the specialists.

She's right, Keithy .Pain Management is the way to go . I feel REAL bad for those docs. For every one of you who (probably) needs a small amount of opiates to help him get through pain, there are 20 junkies who just want OCs.But these guys have seen it so long they can see through the bullshit ( Well, that, and the fact that most states control and keep track of EVERY prescription a doctor writes now, so its harder to pill shop) and can tailor a specific treatment for YOUR pain.

I never thought about going that route before. I;ve just been trying to suck it up, but it gets worse. I have good days and bad days, and during the heat of the summer things get a lot worse. So I finished 30 pills in about 15 days. So, maybe 2 pills a day, though some days I didn't take any. Point is, I'm not a junkie. I even felt guilty asking my doctor about the klonopin. Which is stupid. Because not wanting to be in pain is something I shouldn't feel guilty about.

Left ear only, It just kinda happened one day, degenerated from an underwater feeling one day to full on ringing 2 weeks later. I'll know exactly what caused it.

I remember when i was like 12 ish I thought punctured my left ear drum cleaning out my earr..
For about 2 3 days i could not hear anything from it...
It was just terrifying.
Luckily for me, one night i must have popped something back in while doing that popping of the ear thing that you do when you are on a plane or high alt, and thankfully never had a problem with it again..
Good luck Bob and stay strong.

Don't try to suck it up or your pain will get worse and uncontrollable. You should look into other things besides klonopin as well. I've found that primary doctors are more apt to be paranoid about writing scripts. Pain mgmt will make you sign contracts and will control scripts tightly, but they are experienced with treating pain and will write you scripts for drugs that will actually treat your pain and let you live life. Don't feel like you're a junkie simply because you need to treat your pain - you have a legitimate medical condition that needs to be treated. I would ask your doctor for a referral to pain management. I know my place wouldn't see anyone without a doctors referral.
BTW - I am typing this from bed with a heating pad because my back went out again yesterday! I am in a wedding on Saturday that I'd have to cancel if I didn't have meds that will be able to get me through it.

keithy, like I said hit me on pm bc I'm actually very close with many in the MS world, from ur doc to many others on his level. I also have a friend who would help you out I'm sure with the massage therapy until you get better coverage. He's a real cool guy and is really on top of the pain management side of things. Helped me with countless hockey injuries, but his specialty is MS pain and related issues. He works out of an MS center in NJ, not UMDNJ though.
Also, I have a very good friend that made a dvd on yoga for MS. She based all the poses for MS specific symptoms including pain. People swear by it, including my sis. I had a copy ready for u at the softball game you big emo jerk!

You could have lightly perforated it, most of those will heal themselves in a few days. Having 1 1/4 good ears makes you very aware of the things that can fuck up the good one. As for the well wishes, Thanks buddy.

Also, yes, Missy is 1000% right here, the WORST thing you can do is suck it up, you're in pain for a reason, something is wrong. Your body is almost literally holding up a sign that says "Fix me" so go do it.

Yea i know that now..
But back then I had no idea what to do.
Did you go right away when you started noticing or did you wait until it got noticibly worse?
Sometimes they can fix nerve damage if you go right away...
Your's is degenerative, so it prob would not have mattered i guess..

I was working till 4 and when I got out I went home and passed out. And then I got really drunk. So I missed another event. Damn.
Thanks though. If you would like to send me any info about the center and your friend with the yoga dvd, I would really appreciate it.

I went pretty quickly after I noticed but yeah it wouldn't have mattered as it had probably been going on for a while prior to that, One thing I always found interesting is that they said one of the most common causes is a viral sinus infection that's either untreated or treated with antibiotics instead of steroids. They even said that it could have started when I was a child, I should talk to them more about it now that I've accepted things and moved on a bit and have some interest in it, back when it first happened I was so depressed that I really didn't pay attention to why, all I was focused on was why it couldn't be fixed.
