I saw this movie for the first time in 1985 while in photography school in Ft. Lauderdale. There were still Cubans in the camps under the bridges in Miami. It TOTALLY made me want to be a criminal. And it was probably the first time I was turned on by a beautiful woman, who was way too skinny from doing too much cocaine.

I mean, why would they give a fuck? Everyone knew damn well who Pablo Escobar was, and while that did cost him in the end (read the totally badass book "Killing Pablo"), I can't imagine what that guy was saying would do more damage [than a car bombing in the middle of Manhattan, in front of the fucking UN Building would. He's just saying what everyone already knows: the governments of Bolivia and other countries belong to the cartels. But a damn terrorist attack on US soil would bring a far greater shitstorm than that douche in a stupid car (seriously, what was that car he was driving? It looked like a slightly better-appointed go-kart) could going on Japanese TV or whatever.

So this weekend I noticed that the original 1932 version of Scarface is on Netflix, so I checked it out. I gotta say, I really enjoyed it. The 1983 version is actually pretty faithful to the broad outlines: in both versions, a small time crook does a job that brings him to the attention of a powerful boss, who takes him under his wing. But in both movies, things soon sour when Tony (Tony Carmode in the original) gets too ambitious, makes plays that his boss doesn't approve of (in the original, moving against the gang running the North Side), and that leads to a confrontation that leads to Tony taking over.

There's no chainsaw in the original, which was disappointing. There's also no Octavio, though there is a monkey grinder. But Snoogans will like this: the scene in which Tony has one of his guys call Frank to say "We fucked up" is actually pretty much exactly as it is in the original, minus the f-bomb.

This movie was produced by Howard Hughes, who told the Hays Office to go fuck themselves when they rejected it and booked it in theatres himself. And I gotta imagine that by the standards of 1932, this seemed to be as wild and over-the-top as the 1983 version did to audiences then. The violence is not graphic -- but I'd say about as many people get killed in the 1932 version as do in the 1983 version.

All in all, well worth a watch. Even without Octavio. I won't say it's better than the 1983 version, but it is the movie that the modern gangster movie owes a great debt to.
