Dr. Laura to leave radio amid N-word controversy
Schlessinger, under fire since using a racial slur on her radio show, won't renew her contract. 'I want my 1st Amendment rights back,' she says, citing threats.
Schlessinger drew fire last week when she got into a discussion with a woman who called in to get advice on what to do about racial comments made by relatives. Schlessinger suggested the caller was "hypersensitive" to racism and observed that many African Americans use the very racial epithet that they hate hearing non-African American use. Schlessinger used the N-word repeatedly in making her case.
Schlessinger apologized the next day, saying her behavior had been wrong.
Dr. Laura — is said by the trade journal Talkers magazine to have the third highest rated talk radio show in the country, trailing only Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

You know, if you asked me "What popular radio personality's career will end with him or her screaming the N-bomb over and over at a caller?" I probably would have guessed Michael Savage. Or maybe Glenn Beck.
Why wouldn't it be Anthony Cumia? Notice I said popular radio personality.

Its got nothing to do with survival. Its about living in a "free country" with "equality for all". If thats truly the goal things like this dont help.
If a famous actor gets fired for calling someone an "ignorant nigger" dont you think its kind of childish and moronic that when the news reports it it has to say "This famous actor got fired today for calling his co-worker and ignorant N-word." Thats just a dumb example but I mean as an adult it just seems silly and like child speak to have to do things this way.

I don't see how that's any different than how a news broadcast will self-censor words like "fuck" or "shit" and the like!
It has nothing to do with "equality!" Anyone who uses it sounds like a moron, and white people bemoaning that they shouldn't be able to be able to sound that dumb are just compounding the stupidity!

Context is important, and using it doesnt make you sound like a moron. If youre a professor on the history or race relations doesnt it make sense you would have to use that word in order to lecture? Im sorry, but bringing a word down to a letter is ridiculous and childish. We tell 5 year olds not to use the F word or the S word. As an adult as long as its not breaking any FCC rules, and its not, an adult having an adult copnversation should be able to say anything without having to fear for their livelyhood.
The bottom line is if she was a black man or woman and said the exact same thing in the exact same situation, she wouldnt have heard a peep let alone be forced out of her job. And personally, I feel thats bullshit. You dont have to agree, you can have your opinion, I have mine. Mine isnt going to change.

Seriously, you've failed, just move on! If you honestly can't see the difference between a mosque/community center and the people who attend it and how people are choosing to be offended by them even though they've done nothing out of the ordinary, and using a word that has existed only to hurt and degrade and dehumanize and offend, well, there's not much anyone can do to help you get it! Not using the word "nigger" like she did is just common sense and is an example of human decency. What's decent about a bunch of people who have done nothing wrong being punished and prevented from doing something completely normal and everyday simply because of who they are and because of the misguided intolerance of others? Why should we be tolerant of someone who stupidly tosses that word out like it ain't no thang, especially when it's someone who has gone out of her way to belittle and dehumanize groups of people she thinks are "wrong?" Either way you're defending intolerance, sailor!

You're right, I should have clarified; anyone who uses it casually sounds like a moron, which is what she did! She used the context of the conversation to go off on a silly "they always say 'nigger this' and 'nigger that'" rant! Given that and her past history, this clearly isn't someone trying to have some kind of academic discussion or analysis of the word; she was looking for an excuse and she paid for making a mistake and doing her job shittily!

Because there are clearly different contexts, and she was just jumping on an excuse to be shocking! Tough shit, and she failed at her job! She runs around spouting family values and all that shit, and then think she can go off on a tirade like that on her radio show in the middle of the day! Newsflash, doc: people say "fuck" all the time, too. Just because a word isn't on the FCC list doesn't mean someone shouldn't pay the price for pushing the line too far and willfully using such a loaded and hurtful word just to be shocking! Because it shows that we're at least attempting to move on and strip it of it's power! The idea that more people using it is somehow going to "fix it" or "take it back" is stupid because it's such an exceptional word in that it's history is defined by specifically degrading and dehumanizing people who were treated as less than people! Thats just moronic. Someone else said something to me the other day on this subject. Why is it that blacks hate the word "nigger" so much but call themselves it? Yet every other race of people never call themselves words that they would hate if said by others. For example whites dont call each other cracker. Italians dont call other Italians Wop or guinea, Asians dont call each others gooks or slant eyes, Mexicans dont call each other spics or beaners. But blakcs love to call each other nigger?!!! If its such a bad word, respect yourself enough to not call yourself that. No other group of people go out of their way to fight against something and then allow it to be used amongst themselves. It actually shows that the word is just that a word and to use the idiotic and stupid argument that "you are stripping it of its power" is even more moronic then I could ever imagine. If you want to strip it of its power then dont get mad when its used, dont allow it to have power. If you cant do that then have some self discipline and dont use the word at all. Teach others that its wrong by not using it. When you throw it around like its nothing then you have no right to get mad about it and say it has power.
At the end of the day its a word, awful or not its only a word. The people that fight against it use it which gives it even more power. If you want to take the power out of the word, dont use it and it will fade away and be heard less and less. All those other derogatory words I mentioned I barley hear but the word nigger I hear more now then I did 20 years ago and it comes out of the mouth of people who hate the word most!
Ironic or moronic? maybe both!

I said it was moronic! So why compound that stupidity?!?!?! Plus you backed up my point; if the word is said less and less it will eventually disappear! but what about the use of it by their own people? Why is it that no other ethnic group is classless enough to call themselves the same words they hate said by others? How can you expect to be respected when you have no respect for yourself? I would never walk up to another Italian American and think its ok to call him a wop and then shake his hand or right a rap song and say guinea this and guinea that. How many times do I have to say that anyone using it as slang or an insult sounds like an idiot?!?
thats fine that you do but most people dont say a word when it is a black person saying it. thats the problem and the fact that the same black people that have no problem saying it to their friends or in a rap are the same one who bitch when a white person says it. Hypocrites that also have no class.

but what about the use of it by their own people? Why is it that no other ethnic group is classless enough to call themselves the same words they hate said by others? How can you expect to be respected when you have no respect for yourself? I would never walk up to another Italian American and think its ok to call him a wop and then shake his hand or right a rap song and say guinea this and guinea that. But so many blacks have no problem calling everyone a nigger that is their boy but god forbid it comes out of the mouth of someone else?!
Camps, I hear Italians talk like that to each other all the fucking time. Hell, look at Jersey shore and you'll see it used in every episode. It's all about context and where you come from. To say this woman has a history and the word was loaded is putting it lightly. She's no crusader for free speech here.

I dont think I have ever heard them say wop or guinea on Jersey Shore once. I have heard guido but that sure as hell doesnt only mean Italian American.
Im not making the argument to defend Dr Laura, I cant stand her. I also not saying the word should be said. My argument is that the people who say it the most are the ones offended the most often when its said. I feel if you have any respect for yourself or race and see that word being an offensive word then respect yourself enough not to use it when talking to yo boyzzz.
