View Full Version : Will you still call it Giants Stadium?

I've noticed that people are still calling the new stadium in East Rutherford "Giants Stadium" even though Giants Stadium is now a parking lot and the Giants only own half of the new stadium.
I actually got into a disagreement with someone because they constantly said how the new stadium will be referred to as such because of the "history" of the Giants and the Jets being second-class tenants of the old stadium.
Is it a force of habit or a perception? That said, once the stadium gets corporate backing, will the phrase Giants Stadium slip away? "New Meadowlands Stadium" is a mouthful which doesn't even make sense, there was no "Meadowlands Stadium" to begin with, so why is it "New"?

I just had this argument with my father as we were discussing the US-Brazil game last night. He insists on calling it Giants Stadium. I think the Giants and Jets each had websites where they were trying to sell PSLs and they each called it New Giants Stadium and New Jets Stadium respectively.
I have a feeling that most people will end up calling it The Meadowlands, regardless of who the sponsor is. I don't think I ever heard anyone say "I'm going to a show at The Continental Airlines Arena". It was always "The Meadowlands". Although, Izod Center seems to roll off the tounge better so I guess it matters who the eventual stadium sponsor is as to what people will call it.
I was thinking this last night as I watched the soccer game: The US is making a bid to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cups and there is talk they want to have the final in the stadium. What happens if the stadium sponsor is not a FIFA sponsor? What if its Pepsi Stadium and the official World Cup sponsor is Coke? I worked at the 94 World Cup and they covered all of the in-stadium advertising. But everyone's going to know what the real name of the stadium is even if you cover it. The conspiracy theorist in me thinks they are purposely holding off on naming the stadium until after November when FIFA announces the World Cup hosts.

1) If they get a cool corporate sponsor with a name you make a nickname from, I think the Giants Stadium name will fade. For example, people still call Progressive Field the Jake, Chase Field the BOB (Bank One Ball Park) etc. etc. It's too bad that "The Swamp" nickname is taken. I think that would have been cool.
2) As for the FIFA thing - they will do the same thing they did when the Olympics played in Vancouver - GM Hockey Place became "Canada" Hockey Place or "Vancouver" Hockey Place (can't remember which) - they'll just cover up any corp. sponsorship of the stadium and refer to it as the Meadowlands Stadium on TV.

I got an idea for the Jets: stop being such cheap-asses, and scrape together the cash to build your own damn stadium, which you can then name "Jets Stadium."
And you could even go nuts and actually put said stadium in, oddly enough, New York, not on top of a shitpile in Jersey.

Theyll call it Giants Stadium until they realize its not the same as the old one. Im sure your seat prices will elevate and the feel of the games will change from the old Giants stadium. Then theyll start calling it by whatever corporate shill name its got.
Same reason nobody tries calling the Linc the Vet in Philly. And they are 1-1 in Conference title games there.

I agree on that point, but apparently Christie is working on the solution. One of the re-financing plans for Xanadu is accepting that the entire facade be redone.

As pointed out, this was tried before. The West Side project was killed because the Dolans had an absolute s-fit because they saw the West Side Stadium taking away revenue from MSG and Javits, both of which they own.
As for putting in Long Island or Westchester - 1) where? and 2) Woody is from New Jersey. If he couldn't have the team in NYC, he's certainly not going to have them in Long Island.

Below is a picture of Xanadu for you people outside of New Jersey who may not know what we're talking about. My parents live across the Hackensack River from this thing and have been staring at it for going on three or four years now.
For the longest time my father maintained that the multicolor look was just because of "the way the shipping containers were arranged and that they're gonna paint over them before its done." He couldn't fathom that a designer/architect would actually intend for the thing to look like that.

Last year I went to a Nets game and didnt know what that mess was. I thought it was new parking garages and shipping containers. What is that really going to be a mall? It looks awful and its been in the works for 15 years since they first talked about it? I remember the goal originally was to make it a one stop place before and after games with bars, restaurant, clubs, a mall etc. is that still the plan? Hpw do they expect people to get to it from the new football stadium? they arent going to walk it looks close but it will be a far walk there and then back to your car.

hopefully the naming rights thing will eventually come to be seen as a corporate extravagance that doesn't make any business sense.
has anyone ever gone to a ballgame thinking "i have some money to invest, but i don't know the name of any bank.....oh wait, this park is called CitiField, so i'll invest my money with CitiBank!!"
i can't imagine how corporate sponsors make any money off those stadium naming deals.

I've never understood this argument. Though it's rare to have a stadium in a different state, there a bunch of them in different cities. Especially since so many cities can't really properly locate a modern stadium within city limits. Some of the stadiums that are in different cities, but in the same state, are much farther away than the Giants/Jets stadium is from NYC.

Actually, I like the idea of calling it Jersey Field or something like it. Really would class it up with an oldie time feel and take away the argument from both sets of fans on what it's called. Really good idea that will never be in the mix.

The best was Woody saying in the first game, YEA see You KNOW who's house this is.
Look at all the Jet green and the sign says Jets!
Yea Woody.. It was a Jet Home game..
OF COURSE ITS GUNNA BE THAT WAY!
If it was a Giant home game it would be blue and says Giants.
What an awful org from top to bottom.
