This has happened to me quite a few times with various usb devices. I'm wondering if it is normal.

I have a laptop that has 3 usb ports (all usb 2.0 I assume). I recently got a logitech webcam, plugged it into one of the ports and it walked me through the install without any problems. The cam works fine. The next time I wanted to use the webcam, I plugged it into a different usb port and had to go through the install all over again. (it works fine in that port too).

Is it normal to have to install a device more than once on the same computer just because you are using a different usb port ?

Just for fun, I plugged it into the 3rd usb port. It popped up a window saying a new device was found (webcam) and after a few seconds it told me the device was ready to use. No install was needed.

I dont think so. I can do that at home or with the lappy and it will work fine.

Maybe your pc is uninstalling things for the fun of it.

Im not sure if usb ports being on different controllers have to do with anything either.

Mine acts similarly. Not with every device, but a webcam and an external HD enclosure will trigger the 'installing new devices' thing when I plug them into different USB ports.

mp3 player, gps devices act similarly for me, but flash drives and external HDs don't seem to be a problem.

Some of your USB ports are independent of one another, and some of them share the same hub. Whenever you switch hubs, Windows will prompt you to do a new driver installation.

Thanks for the info. I never realized that.
