Burqa ban passes French lower house overwhelmingly.
Jul 13, 2010 ... If the French bill is approved by the upper house and signed into law, it will be the first national ban in Europe on the burqa, a full-body veil.

I don't agree with a ban, let these bozos do what they want, but I do agree with making them remove it when having to take ID pictures for things like passports or drivers licenses or other things where seeing a person's face is required.

Actually, I think I hear more conservatives pretend that all liberals believe Europe is some kind of utopia (kind of like the Obama messiah thing). I've always heard that France and England were pretty racist countries.

Did an article about burqas in france really turn into a liberal vs conservative argument?
Not that it's a valid reason but they do have a recent history of rioting and violence out of the muslim population there.

Don't worry, there's a "whites only" British National Party that is highly conservative and Geert Wilders of the Party for Freedom in The Netherlands that would pass for your run of the mill tea party politician. Well, he did try to institute a tax for wearing religious headwear. I can't find the article but the word he actually used was "silly hat tax" which was sanitized to something in English. No one is taking a monopoly of racism there, plenty to go around.

Western countries have their pockets of bigotry but are generally tolerant of other people, however some of the most guilty countries of bigotry are Muslim dominated countries. Dont get caught weaing a star of David in Saudi Arabia. In Iran all women regardless of religion must cover their hair. There was recently a report of a woman who was to be stoned to death. Gotta love that Sharia law. Also many of these countries allow honor killings, female genital mutilation and death sentences for gays.

Agreed. I was just thinking out loud. Those here who point to Europe for it's progressiveness should just remember they are just as screwed up, if not more, racially then we are.
Those over there who are out & out racists are complete animals, and those who want to change the world are merely elite whiteys who wind up passing laws that are more patronizing to minorities then laws that truly help minorities.

We do have laws like this. The one that comes to mind is you can't wear masks like if it was Halloween. Religion may be an underlying cause. But I'm guessing appearance and practicality has more to do with this.

Laws like what? Muslims are free to wear a burqa, though certain circumstances may prevent them from some activities. Same goes for Sikhs and their kirpans -- again, circumstances may prevent them from some activities. No one has gone out of the way to outright ban articles of faith since freedom of religion is sacrosanct.

Spain may be next to Bork the burqa (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iXTeJXk6d0HDxNRKn-1F_PM0GvSgD9H1N7MG0)
The Euros are telling themselves that they are going in this direction because they are so evolved, secular and reason-based but I suspect it is they are as worried at being overrun by Muslims as the Rio Grande Wall Builders are fraidy scared of the Latin Americans. There is a lot more "ghettoization"of Muslims in Europe and those neighborhoods are the real breeding grounds of radical Islamist beliefs that we should be worried about. Despite the periodic outbreaks of xenophobia in the US we have a pretty good record and a reasonably good process for intergrating waves of emigrants. Europe is setting itself up for problems - politically and demographcally.

As long as these measures are passing a democratic vote that's approved by a majority of the populace, then the system is working exactly as it is designed to work. The responsibility, as heavy as it is, lies on Muslim population to convince the majority that they are ignorant in their way of thinking. That's the way democracy works, folks.

Spain-next-in-line-to-ban-burka
Spain could become the third European country to ban the burka in public places on the grounds that it oppresses women. The proposal follows approval of such a prohibition in France and Belgium earlier this month. The growing anti-burka sentiment spreading across Europe has already led to a ban on wearing the veil in some parts of Catalonia and Andalusia - the areas where Spain's Muslim immigrant population is concentrated.

France bans public Muslim prayers
Muslims will be banned from praying outdoors in France from today in the latest move by officials to remove Islam from the public sphere.
The ban, announced by the government yesterday, infuriated French Muslim leaders, one of whom accused President Sarkozy's government of treating them like cattle.
