smoke on the water is good stuff. And the guys of deep purple are really nice, especially Roger Glover, he lives in my town and I used to date his step-son for quite some time, so I got to meet everyone. They're a fun lot of people.

Deep Purple, along with Black Sabbath, could be the soundtrack to my youth. Blackmore was an incredible guitarist, and they are vastly underrated as a band.
They blow away Grand Funk! ;)

That's so cool.

During an unrelated search I discovered this old thread from The Blowhard which I can't believe I missed. DP is one of my favorite bands and Ritchie Blackmore is one of the reasons I wanted to be a guitarist.

From 1969-1972 they may have been one of the best bands in the world. Below are clips from what used to be a bootleg show from Sweden in March 1972 just before Machine Head was released. This is just before the rot set in when the material was still fresh, the musicianship was still tight and Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore didn't hate each other. Based on this show I cannot understand why these guys aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

almost always in my listening rotation. Definitely top 5 live albums ever

even Going back to my vinyl version,
which has Space Truckin as an entire "album side".

of any song in history

wolf baying
then dramatic guitar entree
then jungle drums and organ and
na na na na na na na na na na...

One of the best of all time songs of all time...the original version of 'Child In Time'.

R+F had a show maybe 2 years ago about bands that were equally big with different singers. I thought about it too late, but Deep Purple I think would be one of the few.

If anyone is a fan of the "Classic Albums" show (available on netflix), the one for Machine Head doesn't dissapoint.

This reminds me of Rog and rerun's friend - the baskeball player that took music appreciation... they play him some music and he says "I appreciate that."

Well - play me some Deep Purple.

I even enjoyed the 80's version of Deep Purple. It seemed to me there was something different about the band in the early eighties where a lot of people were turned off by them.

Oh hell yeah!!
I bought Machine Head at like some school flea market or something when I was in 4th grade for like 30 cents. Had no idea what it was I just liked the cover...... went home put it on that little suitcase record player........ my life changed that day

Although I'm sure Blowhard would fucking cringe that I'm listening to The Chronic as I type this LOL

I'm biased toward the Mark II lineup, but that IS a great album.

RIP Jon Lord. I know his passing was mentioned in the Random Deaths thread, but his skills on the Hammond were hardly random.
