View Full Version : Useless Characters

In a movie or TV show.
I had been thinking about this ever since I saw Transformers 2 and now after having seen that for like the 20th time I decided to finally post the topic.
In that movie Tyrese Gibson is without a doubt as useless as they come.
His lines are ridiculous and unfunny with the majority of them being for " generic black guy ".
The movie gains nothing with him and could probably only get better if he wasn't in it at all.
Dude!

I cannot fathom watching that movie 20 times.
A second time would be too much.

I've still not seen the opening 5 minutes though.
It just always seems to be on cable when nothing else is on.
I've gotta be hoenst and say I thought it was much better than the 1st one and the action scenes are actually pretty good.
Tuturro ( sp ?? ) is fantastic in it.

C-3PO.
Worthless.
He's a droid who is, inexplicably, afraid of spaceships and space travel. He slows down the team. He offers no solutions to any problems. He misunderstands situations. And, he has a secret.

I actually kinda see a thread of similarity between 3P0 and Smith.
The thing is, Smith is human. His flaws are understandable.
Threepio has no excuse. In the entire SW universe... he's the only droid (character!) that covers his eyes and cries "oh no! oh dear!" when they entire the fray in outer space. It makes no sense! Especially when you consider that he was originally built & programmed by a kid who CRAVED to be a star pilot. Not by Tony Randall.
Oh, and he's clumsy.
Totally useless!
Dear C3PO,
Go fuck yourself.
Sincerely,
Everybody.

That scene was not needed at all.

Since we're discussing space travel, Mr. Furley and Mr. Roper always struck me as pretty useless. Mr. Furley was such a great spaceman I'm surprised he didn't just float away. Always on the kids back though and a real tight-ass. He reminded me lots of Barney Fife.
Mr. Roper (Stanley) never gave it to Mrs. Roper though she wanted it bad. He was tight with his money like many a space man.

C3PO was an imperial spy.

Star Trek: TNG probably could have easily lost Counsellor Troi. About all she did was use her "empathic ability" to sense totally obvious emotions, and she was constantly getting in trouble due to them.
Last night, WGN showed the terrible episode "Skin of Evil" where Tasha Yar, a far more interesting character, dies for no good reason and Counsellor Troi survives. What a waste.

And definitely...

She was tiring from the beginning, but increasingly there just seemed to be absolutely no reason for her to be there, and the show seemed to be straining to figure out a way to bring her in.

Disagree. In the beginning, she and Tony were the focus of the show. Without her, we wouldn't have gotten to known the character of Tony as we know him when the series finished. Her character faded at the end of the series, but she was still an important part to the Sopranos overall.

I think she was important in the beginning because that was the hook of the show. A mobster in therapy.
But all along her character sucked and she really didn't bring much other than to validate the initial plot.

The Sopranos had plenty of dead weight before you get to Melfi.
AJ and Meadow would have got the axe before her.

I think one season had AJ just sitting around eating ice cream on the couch. All the time.

Wasn't he in jail for a season?

I really wish they'd release an abridged version of The Sopranos.
It's a really hard show to muster up the will for a full rewatch, since I know there's so much stuff in there I don't want to waste my time on. Whole chunks of Meadow, Janice and Vito could easily be jettisoned, whittling away most everything but the main plots.

Not to totally derail things but, I agree with you on this.
The Sopranos and DEFINITELY also Lost.
Lost has about two tons of abandoned storylines and characters that had no bearing on the outcome of the show. Nor did they really have any affect on the arcs of the characters. That show needs some serious editing before I do a full rewatch.

Yeah, I can't imagine why they kept her instead of Denise Crosby.

Dexter's wife and sister. Anytime they are part of the scene the show comes to a screeching halt. That might just be because they aren't acted well, so maybe my complaint isn't so much with the characters as it is with the people who play them.

I hate the sister so much more because she's a horrendous actress.
While the wife's character is unneccessry she's not as akward to me.

More importantly, would you hit it?
