The budget for the first 10 monutes of this show was bigger than the entire season of the HBO show.
and I laughed at least once out loud
I saw Louis CK perform a couple months ago in Lakewood, NJ. He was actually recording for use in a future episode, maybe. Before he started they put a couple actors in the audience and recorded a scene with a couple hecklers. So if there is a future show where Louis is doing standup in "Alabama" and someone from the audience yells at him to "talk shit about Mobile" I was there. And if I were a couple rows back I might have even been in frame.
The downside is I've seen all this standup in the show before.

Yeah, when he would say 'fuck' in his act they bleeped it, but I'm guessing the edited the show that way before giving it to the network, the way record companies do with music for radio, since he knew ahead of time what words they were and weren't allowed to say.

Love the show so far. It's the first show in over a decade that I'm going to go out of my way to watch, East Bound notwithstanding (which I bought on dvd and didn't witness the original airings of). I reached a point some time ago where I stopped being a tv guy, but for Louis I'll make an exception. I just love his creative and comic sensibilities.
I also went back and listened to his fair, constructive critique of Gap for the dozenth time. Every time I hear this, it climbs higher and higher on my list of all-time favorite O&A broadcasts. Paul O., I don't know if you've listened to it recently, but you have a lot of really funny lines and interjections in there as well. Give yourself credit for hanging tough with a barb-meister like Louis C.K. and being just as integral to the nurturing of radio gold.

Granted, humor is subjective...
Mr. C.K.'s standup is world class. I will say he is one of the funniest of all time, ranking up with the greatest. The show is far from ground breaking in it's approach, but I don't think it's trying to be. While it may be contrived, it's still funnier (based on 2 episodes) than 99.9% of what is be offered as comedy television today.

Also the conversation they had about the word faggot in the beginning of the second episode really moved me.
Even though it's bullshit folk etymology? Faggot has been synonymous with homoqueercicle for only around 100 years. Before that it meant a pain in the ass woman; before that it was an old crone. That branch of the "faggot" tree all related to the quality of a faggot (originally, of course, a bundle of sticks) being a burdensome object.
The other branch from the original use of faggot refers to its use as firewood. Indeed, when people were burned at the stake, it was termed "frying a faggot," but that applied not only to the sodomists, but also to the sorcerers, sorceresses, renegades, heretics, treasonists, deserters, etc., etc., etc.
PLUS..."faggot" maintained its original usage for a long time. You'll find cookbooks that instruct you to add a faggot of basil to your stew.
In other words, Louis CK's comedy show on FX should not be used for educational purposes.

He kind of touched upon it during his Unmasked interview. The humor he generates from a dark place get the most laughs. And it seems to be therapeutic for him on some level.
The show works for me, but it might not appeal on a broad level like a Seinfeld or Raymond. I hope for nothing but the best for the guy, but if the show is merely 13 episodes of the current kind of episodes we are getting I will be incredibly pleased with series. It is just great.

I'm catching up on full episodes straight from the FX website, commercial free. The very first episode made me laugh a few times, but there was a huge disconnect between the opening school bus scene and the subsequent dating scenes. Maybe that is what he is going for in this series. I guess I'll find out as I watch more episodes.

I actually enjoyed the second episode more than the first. I love what he is doing here. Lots of aspects from his show have been done before (stand up comedy cuts, entering dating world after divorce, raising kids, etc.) but he is doing it in an almost variety show kind of way. It's definitely not a sitcom in the traditional sense.

i'm watching the show as it's posted online and so far (3 episodes in) I think it's brilliant. the scene with Gervais absolutely killed me. I think some of the more "sitcom-y" segments (the awkward date, the school bus incident) are entertaining but not all that strong. meanwhile, everything at the comedy clubs and featuring other comedians is gold, jerry! it's a sharp examination of language, race, and sexual relations in America.

This was in last nights episode.

I like that scene because Louis is both right and wrong and it seems painfully obvious what a world of shit he lives in. It never even occured to him that there was potential for some angry sex because he was so completely lost in his convoluted sense of right and wrong. I like that.

The show reminds me of Seinfeld. Not just because of the stand-up, but also there's a self imposed awkwardness to it.
(As an aside. Louie kind of lost me with the years of marriage counseling stories almost insisting this is the way you're supposed to do it. And "bam" he's divorced and seems to have mastered the skills of that too. A little annoying.)

Hadn't followed Louie but now I've watched the whole series on Hulu. Loved the show, but it's not comedy when he does the stand-up, it's tragedy. If he didn't sell the laugh, or if you just had a dry transcript of what he's saying, it's just a string of morose self-deprecation.
Dangerfield was self-deprecation, but he made that fun with the old time joke schtick, the bug eyes, and the nervous tie-twisting kind of mannerisms. Louie's comedy is just a bummer. That works in the context of the show, but as a stand-up it's not really my cup of tea. Love the show, but his comedy is not fun to me.

Louis CK's show is streaming on Netflix, if that's what you want. However, it has NOTHING to do with Ron and/or Fez.
Good luck, Budday!!

To me the guy is very entertaining because he brings common sense arguments like Carlin did.You wouldn't compare their styles or content, but attitude."I'm right, and I'll tell you why"very reasonable.I'm always willing to listen to reason and dick jokes. That's why I read everything by Death Metal Moe. Gotcha. Catch my youtube vids opening for Metallica singing "Ecstasy of Gold" by Ennio Morricone. When Jim was on his Louis show on HBO I was thinking, yeah it works for me,but it's just not mainstream enough and the set is depressing,so what do the HBO people pay to watch for decades?Sensationalism that you couldn't get on MAINSTREAM,a reaction to PBS pussyland.Just a thought. http://fetishlands.com/ I can only make suggestions. Some get it.Stern did.:king::help::blink::clap::smile: I sing like a bitch daily on O&A.O&A did.

Damn, that started out as a lucid (albeit grammatically abysmal) thought, then it way off the rails. By the end, as I was reading I could hear Ronnie in the back of my head was Ron whispering, "Medication time..."

I caught one of Louis' shows on TV and watched the rest of season 1 on Hulu. I've never heard his "act" outside that show and I've never heard him interviewed, but I loved the show.
I think he's got a great comic persona on the show. The opener where he's wolfing down the pizza and staring at the passing crowd really sums it up for me. He's a guy who is hyper aware of his surroundings but doesn't do shit in terms of "impression management" to get over. That's something that just won't fit into today's society.
I don't think the show will ever be truly "mainstream" for that reason, because most of the populace does the exact opposite of what he's doing--they try to manage other's impressions of them, but insulate themselves from what they're experiencing with constant distraction and escapism. Seinfeld played with the "triviality of reality" concept on his show, but he made it cutesy and mainstream, and at the end, somewhat slapstick. Louis doesn't pull those punches--he shows you the whole sad deal of being real.

He's in a different league than Seinfeld with no laughtrack and microsecond timing of a hip-funk bass player standing in the control booth telling you when to react.Read the script Jerry.Wait for the Laugh Jerry.Make a face....now HOLLLLLD That.Perfect.React to Kramer now.annd cut.Oh so tired.Nappy...we need nappy.Tell us when to laugh again uncle Jerry, tell it again.

So far this seasons Louie has focused so much on the funny sad sack life of Louie, it's very funny, but makes me so glad to be in a happy marriage. He makes middle age single look miserable. Tonights episode was a scream, but then I felt bad for him. So well done.
