Hello Alex! Should be a hurricane by tonight.
The first tropical depression in the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season formed in the western Caribbean on June 25, 2010, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). On June 26, Tropical Depression One became Tropical Storm Alex. By June 27, the NHC reported, Alex had weakened to a tropical depression, but was expected to re-strengthen over the Gulf of Mexico. At 10:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time on June 27, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 miles (55 kilometers) per hour, and was located some 85 miles (135 kilometers) south of Campeche, Mexico.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of Alex on June 26, 2010. The storm hovers primarily over Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras.

As the Atlantic hurricane season approaches its historical peak, U.S. hurricane forecasters are warning that ocean and atmospheric conditions are revving up to an unusually busy and dangerous 2010. (http://news.discovery.com/earth/noaa-hurricane-season-revving-up.html)
If anything, rapidly developing La Nina conditions -- cooling sea surface temperatures across the tropical Pacific Ocean -- have made the atmosphere over the Atlantic Ocean even more favorable for hurricane development.
"Everything is favorable for an active season," said Gerry Bell, lead hurricane season scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center. Bell predicted in May -- before La Nina developed -- that the this year's season was likely to be one of the most active and dangerous on record. At a news conference Thursday, he held firm to his May forecast.

I saw on tv. 70% chance of around 14 (think it was 14) storms getting strong or better/worse. ...That don't sound so bad.

I'm guessing that you don't live or work near the coast.

Near enough. Just because they say 14 storms at close to 50% chance. So let's say 8-9 storms. Doesn't mean any will make landfall.
And it's strong storm. Not cat. 1 hurricane.

the best part was they were say8in how this could be the busiest season ever. it will be busy the whole season, and they will go through all the letters like they did a few years ago
doesnt the season start in June? we have had like 3 named storms and all have been nothing really. At least point even if we get 20, thats no where near the busiest season. It just seems avg at most.

Hurricane Earl lashes Caribbean, threatens US
Aug 30, 11:19 AM (ET)
By MIKE MELIA
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Hurricane Earl lashed the northeastern Caribbean on Monday as a still-growing Category 3 storm on a course that could threaten the eastern United States later this week.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Earl, which formed on Sunday, was already a major hurricane with sustained winds of 120 mph (193 kph), and it was likely to keep gaining force.
"Interests from North Carolina all the way to Maine should keep an eye on the system," said Jessica Schauer, a meteorologist at the Hurricane Center.
The storm's forecast track would run north of the Caribbean, then bend to the north, roughly parallel to the U.S. East Coast. The hurricane center said it is early to say what effect Earl would have on the U.S.

I read most of the models have it pulling to the Northeast not making landfall. On the flip side the models aren't the most accurate when it comes to hurricanes which sometimes have a mind of their own. Should be interesting as it heads in the vicinity of D.C. and N.Y.C. during a holiday weekend. Definitely something to keep an eye as this week progresses.

The Atlantic hurricanes usually follow the Gulf Stream, which is warm water, and does come close to the coast of eastern Canada. I'd image that Canada has been hit by hurricanes many times.

not often, because as the water cools off, it usually turns the hurricane away, like it did with the last one. Or its down to a trop storm. The hurricanes need warm water to stay hurricanes, thats why they tend to turn away from land at first. My questioning isnt cause the storm will get there, but that its still warm enough water to stay a hurricane when it does. THATS unusual. In fact, usually around jersey is about the furthest north they can go before hitting land or dying out quick and turning east

you should read the page, bro. Again, this is what i said, they get the storm, but not the hurricane. Read the description for most of them:
September 18, 1999: Hurricane Floyd struck the Canadian Maritimes after losing tropical characteristics. Despite high interest in Floyd by the CHC, little damage was inflicted in Canada. Floyd did, however, bring winds of 51 mph (82 km/h) and high seas
September 15, 1996: Hurricane Hortense, the first hurricane to directly strike Nova Scotia while at hurricane strength since Blanche in 1975, struck the Nova Scotian coast as a category 1
October 15, 2001: Hurricane Karen brought beneficial rain after striking Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Winds there only gusted to about 64 mph (102 km/h), and little damage was reported
there are some that hit, but usually all at cat 1 from what was pretty big earlier. Most either just graze it or are down graded before they get that, and thats only over the last 15 years where the water has been warming. if you go to the 1950-1994 list there is alot less. that was kinda my point. there is getting more and more. Its still unusual

The Over/Under for the South Carolina vs Southern Miss game Thursday Night is at 47.
From this map it doesn't look like weather will be much of a factor, but if it slides a little West, the UNDER is looking even better.

Srsly, this map (as of now... subject to change as hotlinking to weather pics often do) shows the expected winds that you might experience.
If it were to stay on this exact course, NY area shouldn't wouldn't get more than 23 to 39 mph winds... BUT these things are unpredictable.
As far as rainfall... typically, the majority of the rain is on the northeast side of the storm, but you'll get your share on that side as well. Best you can hope is that it moves through quickly.

Earl stayed far enough away. Weather was not a factor... a late score by USM covered the OVER.
See, knowing a bit about hurricanes and keeping an eye on how far away it was, paid off tonight. I know a few that weren't so lucky.
I've only seen the highlights, but looked to be a nice evening in Piscataway tonight. Rutgers had no problem with Norfolk State.
