WASHINGTON (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/7035703.html)— For the second year in a row, Pearland eighth-grader Aditya Chemudupaty advanced to the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, where he will compete on Friday for the national championship.

Chemudupaty, 13, spelled “pancit” — a Chinese noodle dish — and “crotalic” — an adjective meaning “of or related to rattle snakes”— on Thursday. That performance, combined with his score in a written test, put him in the select group of 48 semifinalists who will compete on Friday.

ABC-TV will provide live coverage of the championship finals.

This is the 83rd annual Scripps bee, going back to 1925, with interruptions during World War II. There have been 85 champions, including three co-champions. Of the 85, 44 were girls and 41 were boys.

Only Google really knows what a bad speller I am.http://www.journeyofthesoul.com/forum/images/dunce_125.gif

A 14-year-old girl from the US state of Ohio has won the country's coveted annual National Spelling Bee.

Anamika Veeramani, from North Royalton, claimed victory by correctly spelling the word stromuhr - a medical term.

She takes home $40,000 (£27,450 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/us_and_canada/10244237.stm)) in cash and prizes, as well as the coveted championship title.

Anamika, who came joint fifth last year, was one of the favourites to win among the 273 spellers who took part in the three-day final in Washington.

It is the third year in a row that an Indian-American has won the championship.
