Hey, man, you don't talk to the Colonel. You listen to him. The man's enlarged my mind. He's a poet-warrior in the classic sense. I mean, sometimes he'll, uh, well, you'll say "Hello" to him, right? And he'll just walk right by you, and he won't even notice you. And suddenly he'll grab you, and he'll throw you in a corner, and he'll say "Do you know that 'if' is the middle word in life? 'If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you'..." – I mean, I'm no, I can't – I'm a little man, I'm a little man, he's, he's a great man. I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across floors of silent seas...

"You know something, man, I know something that you don't know. That's right, jack. The man is clear in his mind, but his soul is mad. Oh yeah. He's dying, I think. He hates all this, he hates it! But ... the man's ... uh ... he reads poetry out loud, alright? ... And a voice! A voice. ... He likes you because you're still alive. He's got plans for you. Nah, nah, I'm not going to help you, you're going to help him, man. You're going to help him. I mean, what are they going to say, man, when he's gone, huh? Because he dies, when it dies, man, when it dies, he dies. What are they going to say about him? What, are they going to say, he was a kind man, he was a wise man, he had plans, he had wisdom? Bullsh-t, man! Am I going to be the one, that's going to set them straight? Look at me: wrong! ... You!" (http://www.lukefisher.com/you.wav)

He seems to have lived life on his own terms (except maybe for his last years) and did a lot of excellent artistic work both of which you have to respect.

Godspeed Mr. Hopper.

Here's my suggestion for a Dennis Hopper memorial film festival:

Giant
Easy Rider
Apocalypse Now
River's Edge
Blue Velvet
Hoosiers
True Romance

I honestly wanted to leave "Easy Rider" off the list because, historical import aside, it just hasn't held up (that acid sequence in New Orleans is actually kind of embarassing.) But if you're going to have a Hopper festival, you gotta have it.

It's also sort of marred by the fact that Hopper had a lot of small, yet memorable, roles. I mean, I put Apocalypse Now on there even though, in the Redux cut, it's nearly 3 hours into the film before he shows up. But his performance as the crazed photographer is just astounding (and probably Method acting of a kind Strausberg would not have approved.)

Damn, this one sucks. It's sad, but at the same time, I gotta give him props for pulling it together and giving us some of his best work -- and some of the most indelible performances in film history -- after he, by just about any logical standard, should have been long since dead.
