I think I'm planning a Maine vacation for September. My primary interest is biking/hiking in the woods although I'd also like to check out local food and maybe check out the beach in a non swimming capacity or any kind of wierd town life stuff. Anyone been to Maine and have suggestions for me?

Once you get there, I'd recommend getting off 95 and switching to Route 1 and go up through Maine on the coast... it's a beautiful drive and you'll come across some great little towns as well as Portland, which has a very cool night life. I also recommend Camden, which has some great restaurants on the water and there is a national park there too.
Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park is awesome for camping and hiking. You can catch whale watching trips from there as well.
Here are some pix I took of Maine (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1562967&postcount=48), in the ironically named "Fuck Maine" thread by Snoogans.

Be careful driving in Maine! Stephen King is notorious for walking in the middle of the road.

I'm actually not sure what you mean. I mean I understand the differant things "smokers" can mean, but I'm not sure which one we're talking about.

Spent a couple days near Rockland last summer. Steamed $3 a pound lobsters at the cabin every night.Great town. Great time. Anthony Bourdain did a show in the area recently. I would check it out.

Check out Monhegan Island - it's 10 miles off the coast (take the "Hardy" boat from New Harbor) - it's a beautiful day trip (great hiking/amazing scenery.) There's a popular lobster pound (Shaws, in New Harbor) right next to where the boat docks.
If you opt to go inland, I really liked the Gulf Hagas/Katahdin Iron Works hiking trails in Milo (center of the state.) It's in the middle of nowhere, but a good side trip if you are in the area.

You really can't go wrong if you follow route 1 up the coast.
If you make it as far as Machias, eat at the Riverside Inn and then take 191 up to Lubec, hike around Quoddy Head State Park, a good day trek, stop to enjoy the views.
Enjoy, and don't be stranger, maybe I'll see you there.

maine is the best...
i love the coastal towns
they are wonderous
if you go hiking inland
the mosquitos there
are ravenous and can ruin
a hike or camping trip
some are as big as crows

Nothing worse than the summer when 100 of those fucking kids tie up the roads.
