Depends on what kind of Windows installation you have. Is it Vista? If you have the Full Install or OEM edition, then you should be able to just reinstall it and activate it again.
If you have an Upgrade edition, you have to install it without activating it, then "upgrade" your full install.
If you have any problems with activation, just call Microsoft and they'll get your key working again.

I tried that with a comp and an OEM disk and it didn't work. The key on your comp is tied to the restoral disk that is specifically for your comp.

As long as you get the right XP bootleg, your key should still work since the underlying hardware is the same. It can be tricky though because you have to have the right Service Pack (SP1, 2, or 3) and installation type (OEM, Full, Upgrade) to match your Product Key.
