Chopped is good, the really annoying thing about it is when they judge the dishes with no sense of how the mystery ingredients are meant to clash and be challenging. So you get assholes implying that the ingredients not matching is somehow the chefs fault.

I was happy to see Jeffrey Zakarian get his ass handed to him on Iron Chef.

Something else that bugs me about the judges is how Zakarian cant take any heat at all, and then Zakarian and the pasta fag act like the taste of onion is someone shitting mace into their mouth. Seriously, you dont like onion? I'll eat an onion like an apple.

I watched cupcake wars and its basically chopped with cupcakes. I actually couldn't make it through the pilot, I was too annoyed. The host is awful and the little confabs between the bakers suck. They obviously also are encouraging them to talk shit, which doesn't work for baking.

The worst shows on Food Network are:

1) Any cake show, especially challenge, and ESPECIALLY challenge with Claire Robinson as host.

2) Private Chefs of Beverly Hills. I've never wanted to destroy my TV more.

Excuse me - I said any cake show, I meant any cake show EXCEPT Ace of Cakes. That's OK. That's fine.

Challenge is good when it doesn't have to deal with cake, but 80 percent of the shows are about cake.

Last week, Challenge had two shows in Hawaii which had to do with luaus and teppenyaki. THAT'S GOOD. That was fun to watch.

But the studio shows, with Keegan, and they are nothing but cake... it's just horrible. Especially since most of the cake competitors aren't interesting AT ALL.

Another good concept that's poorly executed is "Chefs vs. City". That said, where are the chefs on the show from? I only see the latino guy on this show and Chopped and best Thing I ever Ate. Was he from the Food Network Star show or something?

BTW, I forget - was John Besh in the running for the Next Iron Chef or Food Network Star? I forgot?

He's apparently staring in a new show on TLC called "Inedible to Incredible" which looks, in a word, horrifying.

Besh was on Next Iron Chef. I suspect the premise of the show is an awful lot like Future Foods on whatever shitty channel, and Food Jammers on The Cooking Channel.

Challenge has gone down hill since it became solely cakes, although there are a few people I like to watch work. I'd prefer the old format where they show way more cooking competitions that they arent producing themselves.

Flay driven shows have really grown on me. I didn't like him when his image was maverick handsome bad boy of the kitchen, but now I think he's way more self depricating. It makes him more likable.

This last season they had a woman, who owns a place that is apparantly pretty famous in NYC for dumplings, get in trouble for plating everything on the same cutting board surface she was cutting up raw chicken on.

They get to plan, so I'm sure they're not as frazzled that they would make that mistake. Also, I'm pretty sure they get a second period of time to cook what is actually being tasted. Notice how you never really see technique errors on Iron Chef America.

love this show and i saw that episode.....the halloween episode right? fucking black chicken....that shit was disgusting.....i really didn't enjoy that episode.....something about how ridiculous the ingredients were for the sake of sticking to the theme of halloween. That and every basket was basically like saying, "Here, take this fuckin shitty halloween candy that your grandparents used to enjoy and put into a dish with this main protein that nobody in their right mind would cook". just a strange episode, but i do like the show.

and for once i think i actually agree with Chigworthy......you said earlier in the thread about the douchy-ness of the judges and i totally agree....especially the brunette chick. I feel like sometimes even if there really isn't anything wrong with the dish at all, she especially will nitpick and find something to rip on because they're a judge on the show. obviously i'm a fan of seeing anyone with full tattoo sleeves on national tv though.

i think its a bit more different than that......Iron Chef involves one mystery ingredient while Chopped has three different baskets full of mystery ingredients......i'm not a big fan of Iron Chef, but don't they have more leeway too with the types of dishes they prepare? Chopped is also an elimination show which is a different angle than the head to head style......idk, i think Chopped is more fast paced and therefore unique among the other types of cooking elimination shows where its chef vs. chef and a mystery ingredient.

Anne Burrell (one of the "faces" of the net)

Clare Robinson (Face of the net and a "heel")

Duff (Probably one of the top five faces of the net and a huge babyface)

Irvine (Another big food network personality)

If they are doing this in theme rounds, then I assume Freitag, Sanchez, and Zakarian will be together since they are all judges on this show. Who would be #4? The only name that I saw who I read has been a judge before is that Maneet Chuhan chick.

Anyway, I suggest a Babes of Food Network battle between Giada De Laurentiis, Sandra Lee, Rachael Ray (not my first choice, but I can't think of anyone else at the moment to fill in here), and Claire Robinson.
I would have added Donatella Arpaia (bite me, I think she's hot) and Nigella "Huge Tits" Lawson, but neither of them are chefs as far as I know.

Oh, and I see one round is between Burrell, Duff, Irvine, and Robinson. I'm predicting this one comes down to Burrell vs Irvine and whoever loses the finals of Worst Cooks in America will win this round.

If you had Rachael Ray, Giada, and Sandra lee trying to do chopped, you'll get completely inedible dishes followed by sobbing in the corner. I could see Giada trying to hide in the blast chiller or something.

Ray and Sandra Lee are not chefs. They are not even cooks. Ray will be the first one to admit this. Repeatedly. They are personalities.

I think Food TV doesn't want Fieri on this or Iron Chef because they don't want him looking bad.

I would love to see Besh and Ming Tsai on this. Ming Tsai was such a great heel on Next Iron Chef. I loved the way he fucked with Casola a few times.

Clare is a heel in that nobody likes her. She's Food Network's bimbo.

I kinda like Conant too. He's cool on Best Thing and 24 Hour. I think it's just the Chopped Judges Table that makes you turn the douchiness up to 11.

How could he be a heel if he needled the biggest prick on the show.

I mean... YOU LEFT THREE BASKET INGREDIENTS OUT. What remained? A FUCKING DEVILED EGG.

When Alex started defending her, I almost expected Mark to scream "THIS IS NOT VIETNAM, THERE ARE RULES!!"

I wanted Brad to win, but I could understand why he lost. It was basically his overall meal score and fucking up on the bitter melon. When Magnus called him over and basically dressed him down, it was a total dick move but I KNEW he was losing.

I have to agree. The first episode was less than stellar. I would have thought that they'd put out the big stars (the Burrell, Goldman, Irvine, Robinson matchup) in the first episode to keep people coming back.

When I first looked at the cast, I thought I didn't know Lisa Garza because her head was down in her promo pic. Didn't realize that's who she was. I too can't believe anyone defended her dish after forgetting 3/4 of the ingredients.

We get it Debbie. You are fucking KOREAN! :wallbash:

Personally, I'm glad Brad didn't win. I just never liked him during that season. The whole thing about him claiming to be the most accomplished chef that season and wanting to call his potential show Pro or something along those lines irked me because every time he cooked, he fucked up the meal and the judges didn't like the taste. Yeah, real pro there.

Brad is a cunt.

It was definitely a weak episode but it also had the weakest talent pool. Really it isn't exactly fair that they would have to give money to charity, considering none of them have a show or anything. But really you have to win the championship round for that, and that doesn't seem like much of a concern.

Chopped All-Stars observations:

Terrific episode. Lots of good techniques. I hope this helps dispel the rumors that Irvine just likes to yell and is a glorified caterer. He did a great job tonight.

I really can't say anything about Claire... she did work. With the way Robert and Burrell were cooking, it didn't matter if Duff got into the second round or not.

Burrell is a mouthy bitch. I'm sorry, I can't think of any other way to put it. Her comments about Duff and then just consistently giving shit to Robert really got on my nerves. I like the food Anne cooks on her show, but her personality is just too much.

That said, I'm SHOCKED they didn't get Irvine on a sanitation deduction for leaving his plates and dishes on the floor, because they got a "regular" chef on that last season and REALLY wailed him for it.

So Celeb Chefs next week, then the throwdown we're all waiting for - The Judges.

Damn, so close. I thought Irvine may have had this as it was so close, but in the end I have to agree with what decided his fate and that was the best part of his dessert wasn't one of the ingredients.

Overall, this was head and shoulders above the 1st week matchup. These four made those last week look like total amateurs.

I do have to say there is one thing that kinda annoys me about this show. They all plate 4 dishes, but if one dish is missing an ingredient it ends up going to one of the judges. If the other 3 dishes have all the ingredients, why can't they just give those to the judges and leave the 4th, unfinished one for the chopped reveal?

I like Anne a lot. I think she's just a natural shit talker but it's good natured. She didn't slam Claire Robinson, her and Duff are probably tight and she was just busting balls. Duff went to culinary school and worked in savory kitchens before doing cake, I'm sure they know that. The whole Anne/Robert rivalry is most likely fabricated by the network. I'm sure they're aware of it, but I'm also sure a producer is saying "Make sure you mention the rivalry."

I was thinking the same thing about Robert Irvine because I remember that other guy getting slammed about putting stuff on the floor. They dont want to make any of these people look like asses, and I remember that guy was far more obnoxious.

While I agree that it is the rules to plate all 4 dishes, it just seems silly to me that if you have enough to satisfy the judges then why not give them the finished plates.

As for Anne Burrell, she really doesn't bother me that much, but she did say something in last night's episode that annoyed me. I don't recall the exact wording, but when they were in the back room she compared the fear of opening the baskets to being on Iron Chef. It was something along the lines of having to come up with ideas really fast.

Give me a break! Do they really think people are so stupid that they don't know that Iron Chef is planned out ahead of time? They all know the secret ingredient and have all their products and recipes lined up before the show even starts.

Yeah I understand the silliness of it, but those are just the conventions of this game. If you dont finish you need to be penalized. Just like if I can make a great dish out of 3 of the 4 ingredients so I leave out the offending ingrediant do I really deserve to beat the people who used all 4 ingredients?

The one place Anne Burrell would have added experience is with the pace. The thinking on the fly thing is definately bull.

Was glad to see him win this, but I definitely was not impressed by any of them. Unless next week puts through a really strong competitor, Burrell is gonna wipe the floor with these guys.

I have to say, even though I was pulling for Appleman, I thought it was a toss up as to who would win. I think the story and his charity may have been the slight edge there.

Alright, looking ahead to next week, what's the order they get chopped. I'm gonna say Maneet Chauhan goes first because quite frankly I didn't even know she was a Chopped judge until I read it here. She's the one who can most take a hit from being first out. Next will probably be Freitag as she judges less than the next two and frankly her food didn't blow me away when she was on Next Iron Chef. That leaves Sanchez vs Zakarian in the finals. This one is hard to call, but I'm gonna say Sanchez pulls out a close win.

I hate Nate Appleman, not just from Next Iron Chef but I dont like how he comes off in anything. And any American obsessed with Asian shit annoys me, I was so happy when the POA Asian assistant he brough to Iron Chef totally sunk him, and the brunhilda one had to do all the work.

I think Chauhan has a better shot than you give her, Freitag gets very frazzled so I pick her as first out. It depends on the baskets but I feel like the final could be Sanchez vs Chauhan.

They used to make a bigger point of the pantry changing according to the baskets, making key exclusions, which is maybe why they left out either of those. There was one dessert round where they didn't have white sugar, and I've seen there only be two eggs and shit like that.

I was most surprised at Burrell being out 2nd. Granted, I didn't think her entree looked that good, but aside from the tomato comment, they seemed to like it. Appleman's, on the other hand, had a piece of meat cooked wrong and two of the ingredients were hidden. They all agreed that his had little to no taste.

I can't help but feel that his story and charity were a main factor in his winning. I mean his appetizer looked like slop which they all agreed had too much beet flavor, I already mentioned his entree, and they also all agreed that the topping of his dessert was weird and didn't fit. How else can you have something major wrong in all three dishes and still get the win if not for the story factor?

Yeah but his description of the disease made it sound worse and more rare than I'm reading.

Without treatment, mortality may approach 1%, usually within six weeks of onset. With treatment, the mortality rate is less than 0.01% in the U.S.

Whle it is an uncommon but growing illness in America, it looks like it's much more common in Japan.

I know a lot about Kawasaki. Yes, it is much more common in Asians (thus being named after Dr. Kawasaki.) The issue may not be the mortality, but more the morbidity. The issue is whether the kid has his/her coronary arteries affected by the inflammation, resulting in coronary artery dilation. (Don't know if Appleman's kid had the coronary dilation or not- that makes a big difference in his long term prognosis.) The understanding of the etiology is pretty weak, we don't have a great way to diagnosis it, and the treatments are far from perfect and pretty blunt (immunoglobulns and aspirin to reduce the inflammation.)

Judges Round: Alex, Santos, Marcus, Murphy.

Overall, pretty good, but how the fuck did Penny - who's BIGGEST problem on Star outside of being a twunt that she was SLOW. AS. HELL - get into Chopped?

I'm surprised it took them this long to get Vic back on the network.

I like the line up, you never see Chris Santos, Mark Murphy or Keegan Gerhardt cook anything. I wonder if chopped is on hiatus until this starts.

I might be mistaken, but wasn't Mark Murphy on Iron Chef - and won?

For being Iron Chefs, there was quite a bit of criticism for all of the dishes and I have to say not one of those dishes really looked appealing to me.

I'm glad Symon won as he is probably the best of those four, but I could see him being like Anne Burrell last season going into the finals the favorite and being chopped early.

If you remember one episode of chopped there was a white haired, cute young lesbian girl who was a food stylist.

Yesterday Christopher Kimball twittered this from the Today Show

She obviously must have been fucking around on Star just to get face time because she showed she can actually finish meals. Not great looking meals mind you, but she finished them.

I gotta say, for as much as I despise Scott Conant, I got a kick out of him shutting her up and berating her over that phyllo dough. That was funny.

I have grown to love how shitty Scott Conant is.

But earlier in the episode Penny is talking about how she isn't the bitch she was portrayed as on the show, then she tries to tell Scott Conant that his criticism is a matter of opinion and he has to slap her down like a bitch.

I wonder if they even tried to get some of the girls that Penny feuded with on Star to be on this?

And that fucking truffle oil is in the pantry just to mess people up, it's the kiss of death.

Justin really does come off as a little bitch. "Waa waa waa! I'm such a great chef and these other people aren't in my league. How can I lose to such inferior people?"

Although I have to agree with one thing he said. If steak can be eaten raw (steak tartare), then it should be less of a crime to serve the steak under cooked than over cooked like Penny and Vic did.

Justin was a head scratcher on Star, he has nooooooo on camera skills. I think it just proved that Tuschman loves rough trade.

Eeesh, by saying early I didn't actually think 1st out.

Thank God Penny didn't win, or even make the finals. I'm glad Marcus won it all since he is probably the most accomplished chef on this network, but he seems to keep getting the short end of the stick.

Marcus is like the special guest star of the network, they like him but they cant get him into anything regular.

I would've rather seen Symon win, and I think the only reason they didn't pass him was because it looks unfair when you have two really seasoned pro's up against two jobbers. If it was 4 non personalities I think they pass him based on the strength of everything else.

I watched Chopped: Food Net Star edition, and I'm so, so glad Aarti won. I thought she was gonna be done but I got tricked by the editing.

Watched some of the Chopped Grilling episodes. Meh. OK.

RMHL, did I tell you I met Ted Allen at a book signing? Great talk, good guy, and had a couple of fun stories about contestants he hated.

Basically talked shit about Tryg and said what did make it to air (with him telling him to shut up) was the nicest he was. He said he took "immense joy" in telling him he was chopped.

Even though I'm gonna stick with the grilling one until the end, it really shows the difference between real chefs and BBQ pit people. Calling these people chefs (besides the one who really was) is kinda an insult to true chefs.

What they need to do is combine the chopped grill special with the grill masters setup. The grill special is lame because they're just using grill pans. And so far grillmasters is lame because you hear shit like "vegetables, whut?" So they need to take the real chefs and stick them in the real grilling environment. Ideally they would just add grills to the chopped kitchen that already has a fridge, pantry, ice cream maker and all that good shit.
