Dude, when R&F use those topic lead-ins in order to segue to a guest, it's got to be the slickest shit going. Best one yet was for Devo, where they kept a topic about new wave music (or some such associated topic) going and then when a caller suggested Devo, Ronnie introduced Mark Mothersbaugh and the other Devo dude and away they went with the interview. It was fucking insane.
The other one that strikes me was when the Boondock Saints guys came in. Similar set up, similar insane results to the listener, who has no idea what's coming.
Only reason I mention it is they did it with Keith Hernandez today and it was dope.

I'll bet that those callers were on hold for quite a long time just so that Ron could discuss those topics and then segue to the specific callers.

I wonder how much prep is involved. It seems sometimes a guest is dropped in their lap and other times it is prepared. I have started to watch for the lead in, but it is amazing. They get you interested in a subject, then bring in a great related guest. RF 11-3!

I was really impressed when they did it with Brian Cranston. Breaking Bad had only been on a week, and they got to talking about nothing good being on TV, some rube calls in to say "Hey, check out Breaking Bad" and Ron says something like "Funny you should mention it, heres the star."
It was right at the beginning of the show, and they got the headphones on Cranston before going to this guys call. It just worked out perfectly.

Or did they just hit the "play" button once someone brought up the name they were fishing for?

No, this was before RBI proper, he was just a guest on the show and actually spoke to the caller. They weren't really fishing, it was right at the top of the show so chances are one of the first few callers organically brought up Breaking Bad.

It's probably just an intern calling in from the other room or a real caller with a lame comment that the screeners convince to get in on the joke instead.

LALALALA, I can't hear you. Don't ruin the magic.

We all know the phone screeners are there to make sure the callers have something inflammatory to say about Fez. That's just common knowledge.:king:
