Sporadic asshole WiFi (Constant Asshole Comcast)

Comcast cable internet to linksys cunt router #1=Wifi keeps dropping off and requiring assorted reconnecting, power cycling, etc to get the wifi to work for more than a few minutes.

Switch to backup Netgear cunt router #2= Exact same problem.

In both cases, when the service drops out, I can connect wirelessly to the router, but the access is local only. Is the brand new modem that the speedfreak from comcast gave us a pile of horseypoo or what? I can always connect to the internet on either router via LAN.

what type of computer are you using? apple laptops have serious connection issues with N based routers, forcing them to use g usually resolves the issue.

Two different windows laptops have the same problems. Also, one router is N, the other not. Right now the non-N router is holding steady since I posted this (after turning security off, connecting, disconnecting, turning security back on).

I'd put in a plug for Apple's Airport Extreme too. You can do things like plug an external hard drive into it for online storage, or plug a printer into it for network printing. Like anything Apple, though, it's a little pricier than non-Apple products. And, yes, it does work just fine with PC's.

I'd check for sources of interference in your house. Wireless phones, security systems, baby monitors, microwave ovens. The 2.4ghz frequency that 802.11g uses is pretty crowded airspace. Also, where is your wireless router in relation to the rest of the computers you'll be using? If it's on a different floor, that can cause an issue too; wi-fi was built to go out in straight lines, not really to go up or down, or to pass through anything. Every wall a wi-fi signal goes through takes just a little bit out of it. And having to pass through metal just kills the signal.

You might want to look into going with 802.11n. Just about any router, even the cheap ass ones, do it now. Those work on a 5.1ghz bandwidth that is much less crowded, so that might help alleviate interference issues. You would need to make sure that devices on the network can handle 802.11n signals, though if they can't, these routers also send out 802.11a/b/g signals they could use.

Even in line of sight, approx 12 feet away, I've had issues. And don't even think about getting a signal upstairs. The only radio emitting device other than the router is a microwave in the other room. Tried every channel as well. But all that is unimportant, as if I turn wifi security off, there are no issues (on the netgear n router).

And it's back on the new router (#4). They last for about 4-6 months then become shit. How can they get away with this?

I ran through my router graveyard and the same problem persisted. I called asshole comcast and the asshole tech guy was going through his asshole flowchart and asking me where the "big phone cord" went. I told him that I had gone through three routers and that the problem was likely the modem. He told me that the modem was online and that the router was the problem. He wanted me to run my laptop straight to the modem, which I did.

Because it worked he proclaimed the problem solved. I told him that the problem might not be apparent for hours at a time, then he wanted me to leave my laptop hooked up direct for 24 hours. This is not feasible so I asked him again for a modem exchange, which he denied. I hung up when he asked me to state that he had solved all my problems.

Later I hooked up the xbox directly to the modem and lo and behold the problem happens without a router. Time for a new ISP.

So I called back today and thankfully got a foreign call center (yesterdays asshole was american) who was able to tell instantly that the problem was not with my router(s). Magic.
