7-Eleven Launches Branded Beer (http://www.slashfood.com/2010/04/20/7-eleven-launches-branded-beer/?icid=main|aim|dl5|link7|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slashfoo d.com%2F2010%2F04%2F20%2F7-eleven-launches-branded-beer%2F)
This week, convenience-store chain 7-Eleven announced it would begin carrying its own budget brand of beers, dubbed Game Day. The news made me do a double take, nearly causing me spit out the sublimely hoppy Stone IPA I was drinking. Was 7-Eleven angling to be my low-cost craft-beer salvation?
Mmm...not exactly. As expected, the decision was driven less by a desire to sell great brews than the bottom line. Beer purchases in convenience stores dipped 4 percent last year, according to research group SymphonyIRI -- nearly double domestic beer sales' 2.2 percent decline.
But the silver lining is that purchases of sub-premium beers (Keystone Light, Natural Light) actually ticked up. Customers haven't stopped drinking. They just want to pay less for a buzz.
Sometimes this gambit pays off, such as the medal-winning Mission Street pale ales and IPAs that California's Firestone Walker brews for Trader Joe's. But brand-wise, Trader Joe's sits on a slightly more elevated plane than a convenience store selling unnaturally glistening, endlessly rotating hot dogs.

More cheap ass corn/rice beer. I am actually surprised at the selection of microbrews I can get in a 7-11, but at least 75% of their stock is cheap domestic. Do they really need more?
I'll stay with my old standby

It's virtually just a Budweiser at this point.

Not even close. Same taste/recipe. Just that Bud owns it now

They no longer brew it in Latrobe and don't use glass lined tanks anymore.

I've never had Rolling Rock before. I have no clue why. But tomorrow I'm going to be buying some beer, so maybe I'll pick some up. Nice and cheap.

As was said before, it's not the same beer as it once was. If you want some quality, low priced domestic beer, get yourself some Yuengling.

I just think it's shitty what happened to that beer.
At least Yuengling hasn't gone the same route yet.

The whole glass-lined tanks thing always seemed like a gimmick:
A: Why would you line a tank with glass? Physically, it would be more trouble than just having glass tanks. I'm not even sure how you would take a tank of some other material and "line" it with glass. I'm sure the reality is that they have glass tanks, but describing it as glass-lined is one of those marketing gimmicks that sounds cool, like keystone's special can lining.
B: Glass is cool, but is no better than high-quality stainless steel when it comes to brewing. Glass works great for brewing, but it is heavy and fragile on a commercial scale. Homebrewers have used it for decades because old 5-gallon glass water and acid carboys are readily available, but when a homebrewer really gets obsessed about upgrading, he/she will drop some serious dime on a stainless fermenter.
That being said, Rolling Rock is probably my favorite green-glass beer as it managed to pull something off that none of the other idiotic breweries that bottle in green glass do: Freshness, and subsequently little or no skunk/tomato leaves aroma/flavor.
