Allright buddies, I'm sitting in a cheap Glasgow hotel waiting for a flight this Thursday back to the states. It looks like the airlines are sick of the experts' opinions and want to move...would you hop on a flight through this shit?

there is silica in the ash. If you fly through it, the engine will heat it up and melt it, essentially gluing the engine stopped. When engines stop in the sky, you probably dont wanna be on that plane

LHT is delaying bringing an EMPTY B747 into Frankfurt for a mod layover that is overdue, and screwing up our schedule.

But it's hurting them more than it's hurting us, so I gotta figure they know what they're doing...

...so no, if they won't fly it empty, I don't think I'd get on one right now either.

Why can't they fly around the ash cloud, I don't get it. Like, go South, then West. Or fly to Japan, then across the Pacific?

is this serious?

The ash cloud is covering most of Europe. And its pretty hard to shock coordinate refueling and landings at places you should never land, not to mention that trying to fly 20 hours around the world the other way would probably cost way more than they are losing by just not flying.

Haha... wow, someone who knows Mobile!

But, no, I didn't. I was transplanted down here against my will after my Junior year of HS in Ohio. I ended up going part time my Senior year, and "graduating" from Fairhope High across the bay, before I left for Auburn.

The problem is that they still have to take off and fly through miles and miles of ash before they could ever be in clean air, and start to think about going around it.

Besides the visibility problems, and clogging the pitot static tubes which tell the pilot how fast he's going, like Snoogs said, the ash does major damage to the engines and could build up to the point that the engines seized up. And it's possible that the windshield and leading edges of the wings could be severely scratched up by the time you did make it through.

Especially for flights out of Glasgow Airport. Looking at where the ash is coming from, and how it's spreading, that's about the worst spot. Unless the winds somehow shifted the cloud way to the North, they're screwed for a while.

If you're desperate to get out, you'd better start looking for trains heading south, and plan on travelling as far as Italy before you find an airport with flights leaving.

If they don't clear this shit up fast, I am going to be stuck in Africa when I am supposed to be home in Costa Rica for a month. I want them to go ahead and fly... but I don't want to be on the first plane.

BRUSSELS — A senior Western diplomat says several NATO F-16 fighters suffered engine damage after flying through the volcanic ash cloud covering large parts of Europe.
The official declined to provide more details on the military flights, except to say that glasslike deposits were found inside the planes' engines after they patroled over European airspace.
Last week, two Finnish Air Force F-18 fighter-bombers suffered similar damage while flying through the ash plume that has paralyzed air traffic over much of Europe. Both landed safely, but their jet engines will require expensive overhauls.
Volcanic ash tends to stick to a jet engine's interior parts, such as the turbines, where it melts to form a glassy coating. This restricts air flow and heats up the engine, leading to engine failure.

I haven't researched it in depth and kept hearing Iceland... assumed it was just over Iceland.

Yeah, but if I wanted to get home, I would drive as far East (or South, I guess) as possible and fly the other way.

the problem is its not like the US. That makes you have to go through a few countries. and again, you would pretty much have to drive to Asia to find a flight that would end up lasting you 2 days and costing a ton. Most people probably cant afford that. Plus if you are in the UK, where are you gonna drive?

It's not as difficult to go from country to country in the EU. To get to Spain you'd just do UK -> France -> Spain.

You can drive from England to France, there's a ferry and a train you can put your car on. I'd be trying to GTFO immediately if I was looking at being stuck for weeks. You could be in Madrid or Rome in 18 hours, I think that's where they said flights were leaving out of now in Europe.

Read an article saying you can do it for $800 and people were getting teams together and splitting between 3-4 people in one car. I'd rather do that than try to pay for a hotel room for god knows how long. It would drive me nuts being trapped. It's 1000 miles, like driving from NY to Miami, ppl do that all the time.

as stan said, good luck booking one. And even still, its thousands of dollars. Its not like flying from newark to florida for 400 bucks. That shit is not cheap and im sure the airlines are jacking up the rates like mad right now too. Completely not feasable for 99% of them, esp after they just spent all their money on vacation

actually, the hotels have remainded pretty cheap for the people staying in them because the next people who were supposed to stay cant get there. So if those people leave the hotels get nothing. So they have been giving great rates

The amount of money I'd lose in pay, plus the amount of money I'd spend on hotel/food/etc, would probably equal the cost of a jacked up flight home. No way would I stay there if there was no date in sight that flights would be running again.
