High speed rail is nothing but a shiny, vain ornament to impress slack-jawed tourists, so this looks like it would be a perfect addition to further the cause.

If that is how they plan on getting to the moon, then I think that White People can rest comfortably on their laurels a little while longer.

If you had a billion bad drivers around you, you wouldn't want to stop either.

do the passengers somehow get to-and-fro the big train?

It's a brilliant idea. The Chinese are extremely impressive when it comes to developing transportation and energy innovations.

No, the big one hauls industrial waste to be dumped directly into the ocean.

Their gigantic dams are a big hit with everyone downstream of them.

No question there are people in SE Asia who aren't happy with China damming certain rivers. I don't see what that has to do with saying the Chinese have brilliant energy and transportation innovations.

Hey, it's the only way the human race will survive 2012.

Maybe in some countries but high-speed rail is the backbone of Japan's transportation and isn't just a shiny, vain ornament to impress tourists.

Being long, skinny and dense as fuck, Japan is unquestionably the best market for HSR, but even so, isn't it still a massive economic failure? Didn't it get auctioned off for pennies on the dollar back in the 80s?

You might be right. I don't know shit about bullet trains in Japan except that friends of mine there use them all the time and say that it is the main way people get around the country.

My only point with the Chinese and trains is that there is technology and policy that they do really well. Plenty of things wrong with the country but it's just inaccurate to say that everything they do will inevitably be fucked up.

Because their most famous "energy innovation" is an environmental disaster and is affecting everything downstream, an ultimately up the coast. I don't see how you don't see that.
