The website tells me that the usage tracker is only available for certain areas. I'm so fucked when they decide to roll it out to the boondocks... i probably account for 3/4 of the bandwidth used in this entire town.

Some of us have no other viable options for high speed.
I know my experience in the hick town we live in now certainly isnt typical with Comcast, and we had a lot of issues in the small city we lived in before but my up/down speeds are actually pretty good here and I NEVER go down, ever.

What pisses me off about capped usage like this is that, increasingly, there are more and more legitimate reasons to use that much data. I mean, stream HD video for a while, and you'll rapidly approach 250GB in a month.
Downloads are getting bigger. I know for the Mac, the 10.6.3 update just came out -- which is about a 700MB download. If you picked up the Windows 7 beta, that was either a 2 or 4 GB download.
Comcast sells this by saying, as shown in the examples here, that 99% of users won't get to 250GB. That won't be the case much longer, I don't think.

In ever understood people who say stuff like "Comcast sucks", or "people still use comcast?" Does some one else out there have a fancier internet or cable? Is Comcast using old coal burning satellites or something that I don't know about?

Ive had Comcast for years and I have NEVER had any major issue with it. That includes cable, internet or phone.
I dont get why people criticize it. I really dont.
But then again Im right outside of Philly and they are based here so maybe the Comcast around here is alot faster and easier then other places. I have no idea.

They throttle their speeds and put a cap on the amount of data transfer you use each month. After saying that I have absolutely no problem with Comcast I get great speeds.

Gotta keep that share ratio up homie.
Sad thing is that most ISPs will probably start doing this anyway. Hell they just won a case that allows them to prioritise your traffic (i.e. throttle the ever living shite out of your torrenting).

It's easy but it's not free
http://www.shemes.com/
Pay for a package download the program the use called grabit then download the .nzb files and it will download all the rar files for you unrar them and you will have what you want real quick. Everything that gets put on a torrent site is usually on usenet first.

First you need a provider. Compare services here (http://www.newsgroupservers.net/) (Giganews or Astraweb are good choices).
Then you need a client. I recommend SABnzbd+ (http://sabnzbd.org/)
Then you need .NZB files. Search here (http://www.binsearch.info/) or browse here (http://nzbmatrix.com/nzb.php).
It takes a little while to become familiar with the operation, but once you do, it's great.

I'm stuck with Comcast as well. I have the use meter thing that they sent out in March. I haven't used it yet. What angers me is I have Netflix but don't dare use their instant viewing option to see films over my computer. I have the ability to rent movies from Amazon via my TiVo for less than any of Comcast's pay per View movies. Again, I don't dare. If you go over the limit they can do any or all of 3 things- throttle your Internet connection speed so downloads are incredibly slow (they did this to subscribers who were using Bit Comet until they got in trouble for it). They can charge you for the amount you go over per gigabyte and force you into the $100 per month business class. They can cancel your account.
The ONLY alternative in my area is AT&T DSL service which for mid tier costs the same as Comcast. It's slower although I have never even gotten to 50% of either upload/download speeds Comcast advertises. The biggest plus is it is still unlimited (uncapped). The trouble is I still despise AT&T for so willingly sticking their corporate head up the government's ass and allowed the government to listen in on and monitor all communications and Internet usage by its subscribers. All without warrant or subpoena.
Back to Comcast, they recently added a subscription based TV over your computer service. While the whole issue on net neutrality is being hammered out (including the major set back of a few weeks ago in which the [Corporate] Supreme Court ruled that the FCC had no jurisdiction over Internet service, it's pretty obvious what would happen to site like Hulu and the others that provide on-line TV if net neutrality fails. And Comcast, AT&T, and Time-Warner gain control over the Internet.
Think XM-Sirius and how the service is differentiated and becoming more so with some programs where what you hear depends on which service you have. The opening music from R&F for instance. Last I heard, Sirius gets it, XM does not. And who had them first?
I don't mean to rant, but I tell people that if you can imagine what your Internet experience would be like if Fox News controlled what you could see, hear, and read, well, that's what's at stake. All the bullshit like caps and limits and tiered services are just ways that telecom corporations are selling the electronic equivalent of bottled water. It sucks, but without competition they rule the playground.:annoyed:

But XM gets extra commercials, so it all balances out.

I think there is a very good reason for this. Ron had some convincing arguments on his blog a couple weeks ago.

i don't think i ever read Ron's blog. i've been a member here for a while and generally stay out of any discussion of the show or the people on it. i don't post very frequently because i note there's a bit of a tendency to pile on that's often out of proportion to what's posted and things can get quite nasty quickly. anyway, i haven't explored the site very much but will look for Ron's comments about it. i take it his blog is accessed by the blog button here rather than being a separate site?

Did you really just say that?
technically, i typed it.
i don't care so much about the music leading into but as one of the earlier subscribers to XM and having a substantial amount of money invested in XM gear (4 vehicles with receivers, 2 portables, and a pair of Polk XM receiver on my home sound systems) i worry that bit by bit XM service is going to get squeezed out and the XM hardware rendered obsolete. i look suspiciously at any such changes that establish a trend and i have no faith that as a corpration Sirius give two shits about the XM subscribers. they do for now, but i really think the XM days are numbered. even as a business decision it would make sense to have one programming menu, one hardware format, etc.

On Ron's blog he talked about the staff meeting Mel Karmizan held, and he said that he plans to reposition the XM satellites over Asia by 2015. Your receivers won't technically be obsolete, so the SEC can't do anything about it.

so that basically means world-wide coverage and market expansion? or servive is moving all together? man, i hate that i expect the worst from the corporate world!
in my earlier Comcast rant i forgot to mention they also had gotten in trouble by screwing with subscribers using VOIP services other than theirs. the FCC had to intercede on that issue, too.
there's a poll at http://consumerist.com/2010/04/worst-company-final-deathmatch-ticketmaster-vs-comcast.html with voting for the worst company in America. it's down to Ticketmaster vs. Comcast and Comcast was leading 57% to 43%
