They served imitation crab in our cafeteria today, stuffed inside tilapia. I wonder, who are we trying to fool with imitation crab? Is there any other food we manufacture that we dress up to look like other foods?
How did a substitute food become as popular as this stuff? They even add red color and stripes to complete the effect, and I wonder if we would eat it if it did not look like that.

Most cinnamon is imitation cinnamon (cassia).
Margarine and Crisco are imitation butter and lard (margarine even being dyed yellow...an interesting history there, actually).
I remember the Ritz cracker box having a recipe for mock apple pie. Never tried it though.
Imitation caviar.

Come to think of it, I have seen soy chick'n nuggets and Boca Burgers. I remember when I was a kid some company tried putting stringbeans in the middle of french fries to fool kids into eating the vegetables.

Since I don't eat sushi at expensive places, I'm sure I've had imitation crab in every roll that calls for crab.
So I don't mind it, it wasn't a bad taste. Doesn't really taste like crab but it's an OK flavor that is it's own really.

But don't you see? Even the most expensive Kobe burger is masking the true nature. Meat is not intended to be ground; you are supposed to eat it straight off the bone after you've killed and butchered it with stone tools, because otherwise you're masking its true nature! WHY DO YOU HATE THE TRUE NATURE?

and true nature is the same. The crabs and the fish they make imitation crab from live in the same place

What does that even mean?
What I mean is, if we are not going to eat the actual food (crab or whatever), is it really necessary to make it look like we are eating something else? Like my earlier example of how they use to make these disgusting french fries that had veggies hidden within them to fool finicky kids who did not want to actually eat vegetables, but who had no problem eating french fries. As an adult, is it necessary to make whatever fish they use to make the imitation crab meat look like crab for you to eat it?

I kinda hear what you're saying. It reminds me of these vegetarian choices they make taste like meat I've seen. Why? I think most vegetarians who don't want meat aren't looking for a veggie substitution that tastes like meat.
I guess they're for people who want the meat by who's diets need more veggies, but is a processed piece of shit in a box really any better than the fresh meat? Not really sure about that.

And I looked up that Ritz mock apple pie recipe and it is fucking braindead moronic. Apples are cheap; use them.

Because there's more to food than just taste. Grey fish goo is not as appetizing as colored fish goo. A substitute product that's nearer to the original is more valuable than one that's not.
Going back to the margarine vs. butter thing that I was talking about before: when the dairy lobby managed to get laws passed regulating the color of margarine (sometimes making it pink or green or black), margarine sales plummeted. If you produced a colorless fake crab, you'd sell less than a colored version.
By your logic, why should we care about the color of anything? Should all cotton t-shirts be a natural off-white? Is it necessary to wear a blue t-shirt, or should we, as adults, choose to respect cotton's true nature?

It tastes okay, and I hear its suppose to have less cholesterol than real crab and its less money and easier to handle, etc. The point I was trying to make is that I wondered if it shows how superficial we are by preferring to eat something that is made to look like something else.
I can't think of the name of this stuff, but the Germans make it and it is made of almond paster and it is really sweet and delicious and made to look like fruits. But you know it is not really fruit and it does not taste like it so it is not like someone could be fooled by it. But the imitation crab illusion is so good that someone might mistake it for the real thing. It just seems odd.

While it may be technically true that Germans make marzipan, it originates in the Middle East like that other sweet treat Halvah.
