Sorry-- I just need to VENT!!!!!
I'm a proofreader at a printing company. One of the new procedures is that I have to check the desktop department's work before they output proof pages. This is a cost saving measure to save on supplies such as paper stock, Kodak stock, lamination, etc. It adds a little bit more work to my schedule since I have to put things aside so desktop can make corrections and output proof right away. In general, it's not a big deal.
Most of the guys' work is good. Occasionally I'll find an error with some of their jobs; no biggie. But there's one desktop operator who is a COMPLETE MORON. A little bit of me dies inside when he gives me something to check. My work flow comes to a grinding halt because I have to double and triple check his work. He doesn't read directions and his work is sloppy at best. He usually misses half of the things he had to do. One of the things that annoys me is that if I don't return his work within, say 15 minutes, he outputs the job anyway. He wastes stock and wastes my time because I have to check his work a second time. What annoys me more is that even when I return his work in a timely manner he pays no attention to the post-it notes I put on his job to alert him to things he has to fix. I sign off on the job ticket when I'm done checking desktop's work. The other guys pay attention to my post-it notes and make their corrections. He's the only one who can't grasp this. I'm afraid one day I'm going to sign off on a job ticket and get in trouble for "not catching" an error he was supposed to fix. I now have to make a special exception with him to prevent this.
My supervisor has little patience with this guy. Last week "Kramer" (his nickname among the ranks because he's so spastic) didn't make a lot of the corrections he was supposed to make. The corrections were clearly marked in the instructions section of the job ticket. They were also clearly marked on the set of proof that the client sent back. Well, Kramer left for the night. I brought the job to the attention of the supervisor. He said, "I'm not fixing that. I'm calling him to come back and fix it." There was one correction I just KNEW he'd fuck up. I wrote VERY CLEAR instructions on the proof page of what he needed to do. I even circled an example on the same page and wrote, "Make it look like this." He came back to make the corrections and, sure enough, he fucked it up. I gave it back to him and painstakingly explained what he needed to do. It took him two minutes to "get" it.
Like many companies, my company laid off a lot of people in the last year and a half. They laid off a lot of very talented desktop people. I have no idea how Kramer has survived. The one issue that REALLY chaps my ass is that they know he sucks. He's given the easier jobs and makes close to $40/hour like the rest of the desktop guys. Kramer makes twice what I am paid per hour. For some reason, management likes him. I don't get it.
And I don't want to dislike the guy. He's a really nice person. He was one of the few from desktop who congratulated me when I got married.
I just needed to vent!!!
