It's real, and it's coming. From the Wall Street Journal:

This will be awesome.
My question is this: I have a bunch of paid apps for my touch. If I go to the Iphone, do I need to re-buy?

Its Apple, they will assume you will gladly pay for it again.

Just a guess based on Apple's past policies.
1 unit is linked to one computer. The iTunes, the stored apps and media are for 1 unit only.
You can't plug in another apple product and grab stuff from the dedicated unit's account.
Looks to me that they have yet another way to slide it right into your dumper. (sans lube)
Enjoy your iPhone, Matt.

Actually, there is a way to get those apps on more than one itouch/iphone.
Last fall, I upgraded to the 64g iTouch. When registering it, I checked the box that said I was replacing an existing player. All of the apps were installed on the new player, and they still work fine on the old 32g.

I was about to get excited about the news, but then two things occurred to me:
1) Unless Apple ups their security, there's no way my company will have their e-mails available on an iPhone.
2) I love having my 64G Touch so much and I doubt that they'll be offering a 64G iPhone right away.
So when I can get an upgrade in October, I'll probably stick with Blackberry (although I'm not going to get a storm again).

But you don't need that expensive of a smart phone anyway. Because I have the Touch, the only thing I really need on my cell phone is email capabilities (and maybe the tether aspect). I don't need the bigger screen, or other options (like apps) available on my Touch.
So just pay less for a lower end smartphone.

To be honest, I didn't pay that much for the phone, and one of the reasons I got it was because of its ability to wi-fi share. Not all verizon's smartphones can do that.
To be honest, I don't like the apps on my phone. I like it for it's form factor and the wi-fi sharing. I don't really do that much with it outside of that.

I guess that's my point. If you can tether to the Touch, I think the touch can get most of the apps the iPhone can (except for stuff linked to cameras). So if you have the Touch, why get the iPhone when a lesser phone (with a tether) will do?

Yes, through not only the official SiriusXM app but a couple of other radio apps.
I'm kinda bummed about this, because I bought a droid in November. Like Matty, I'd use both my itouch and iphone. The big reason for me to have an iphone is the simplify app, which would allow me to stream my entire home library (including bootleg FLAC's) in my vehicle.

Gizmodo rightly points out that verizon is switching their call carrying tech to the same as AT&T in a year so it doesn't seem smart economically to invest in a system that will be obsolete in a year.

A few things
You can link multiple devices to one account on iTunes so you can have a iPhone, iTouch with the same apps
Apple doesn't offer insurance they offer apple care which is a extended warranty. If you buy your iPhone from BestBuy you can buy their insurance which is much better then Apple care b/c it covers accidental damage, like screen cracks and things like that.
As far as the Verizon thing until Apple comes out and says it I'm taking all the "news" as a rumor.
For those of you worrying about insurance don't buy them from the Apple store, AT&T store or Verizon Store (if that happens) by them from BestBuy they offer insurance for the iPhone.

Yeah, but Apple's protection plan for the iPhone costs $69 for 2 years. You get a battery replacement during that time as part of that, and that's $79.
Plus, if you have Apple's plan, you can get an advanced replacement on the phone (meaning they send one out to you before you send yours back to them) at no cost. You do have to put a hold on a credit card for the full replacement cost of the phone, but that's released as soon as they get it back.

Yeah BestBuy is up there with AppleCare, I'm stuck with Apple care now. In order to use BestBuy's program you have to buy from them. My Next iPhone will be purchased there. They cover accidental damage replacement, if something is wrong with your phone the swap it out there like Apple does. The things Apple Care is missing they will cover. I really recommend looking into Best Buy over the Apple Store or AT&T. I purchased my last Macbook Pro from there and I have better coverage with their plan then I would have had if I got Apple Care and it was cheaper also. I would have originally purchased my iPhone from Best Buy but they weren't carrying them when I got my 3G.
Edited to add
The iPhone apple care only last 1 year at least that's what I renewed last August for around $79

Until Steve Jobs does his Dog and Pony show to announce it(like they do with every single other apple product ever released), I Won't say it's a definite. I don't have a problem with it going to Verizon. I just don't buy the hype yet since lots of rumors float around about Apple products especially the iPhone that never come true.
Verizon iPhone: What We Know So Far
Yesterday the web was ablaze with new rumors that Apple is developing two iPhones, one of which would be for the Verizon network. Deep-seeded unhappiness with AT&T’s network only helped fuel the rumors across the web.
The reality though is that little is known about the supposed “Verizon iPhone.” Nobody knows if it even exists, and anyone who claims otherwise is lying to you (unless, of course, that person is Steve Jobs).
So, is Verizon getting an iPhone this year? Next year? Does it even exist at all? It’s time to separate rumor from fact and iterate what we know about the mythical Verizon iPhone thus far.
Signs Point to a Verizon iPhone … Eventually
There have been rumors for some time now that Apple would drop AT&T exclusivity, but it has yet to come to fruition. The chatter really started heating up last year when rumors surfaced that Apple and Verizon were already testing a 4G iPhone. Of course, nobody from either company has confirmed it.
Some rumors do match Monday’s Wall Street Journal report, though, giving the Verizon iPhone some life. The assertion that Apple has contracted to produce a CDMA-compatible iPhone for the third quarter 2010 matches the timeframe given in the WSJ for an iPhone on the Verizon network.
There’s more, too. According to TheStreet, a Qualcomm chip will power the Verizon iPhone. And yet more people say that T-Mobile will get the iPhone this summer.
Overall, it’s a hodgepodge of data points, but they seem to point to the eventual dissolution of AT&T-iPhone exclusivity and to the introduction of a Verizon iPhone. It would most likely come late this year or early next year, since production of the device wouldn’t occur until the third quarter of 2010.
And Yet Rumors Are Often Wrong
There is no guarantee that a Verizon iPhone will be announced in June or July — when Apple normally reveals new iPhones — or that Apple will even break AT&T exclusivity. Both the rumor that the iPhone would leave AT&T exclusivity during the iPad event back in January and the assertion that Verizon would carry Apple’s tablet were wrong. Whose to say that any of these other rumors are true?
While Apple may indeed be planning a Verizon iPhone, it can change its plans at any time for any reason. AT&T’s network could improve remarkably in the next few months or Verizon may not offer enough incentives to Apple to satisfy the tech giant — there are just too many possible scenarios.
The truth is that the only person who really knows the fate of the iPhone on the Verizon network is Steve Jobs, and he’s not talking. But the signs do point towards a Verizon iPhone appearing sometime late this year or next year.
Are you waiting for a Verizon iPhone? Would you switch carriers or phones for it? Do you think we’ll see one in the next year? Let us know what you believe in the comments.

There are a couple of thousand bloggers, analysts or whatever you want to call them spinning the rumor mill about Apple products that never come out. They all talk a bunch of shit and hype things up and they never happen. Go back and look at the rumors for the iPhone 3GS or the iPhone 3G or even the iPad. I do agree with you that it should be on more then one carrier here in the U.S. Other countries have it on other carriers so should we. My main point is don't buy the hype until Steve Jobs or Apple comes out and says what they are doing. It has happened in the past where all these sites will put out mock up drawings of the next device or list what the next device will be able to do and when it comes time for Jobs to address it these people are completely wrong. I get that the guy I quoted said one thing and then said something else a few months later most of these people do that. I didn't seek out this particular author and post his articles. I skimmed through the couple of hundred or so articles that came out today about the iPhone not going to Verizon and posted the link.

This is interesting: apparently, AT&T has launched an ambitious program to improve their network:
http://gizmodo.com/5506273/are-you-feeling-atts-100-day-plan-to-fix-their-network?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+gizmodo%2Ffull+%28Gizmodo%29&utm_content=Google+Reader
Now, they've done this before, and it's always kind of seemed to go nowhere, but you gotta wonder if they're feeling pressure to keep people from bolting to Verizon or any other carrier who might get the iPhone.
And something else I'd point out: the US is about the only major market left where the iPhone is still on only one carrier. It's on four carriers in Canada, for example.

Another analyst saying Verizon isn't going to get the iPhone but Sprint and T-Mobile will.
Citi: Verizon iPhone Delayed Due to ‘Key Component’ Problems
Another analyst has piled onto the growing sentiment that Verizon will not offer a CDMA iPhone by the middle of 2010 – or not until 2011. Citigroup analyst Richard Gardner said Wednesday a 2-month manufacturing delay in a “key component” will push the CDMA handset’s launch back to the fourth quarter of 2010 or the first quarter of 2011.
The hitch is due to “a manufacturing delay of several months in a key component,” Gardner told investors Wednesday.
The delay apparently is at Taiwan Semiconductor and centers on the phone’s Qualcomm chipset, Gardner explained to Barron’s.
Gardner becomes just the latest analyst to shoot holes in a Monday Wall Street Journal article suggesting Apple would produce a CDMA-based iPhone ready for volume shipping in September. Earlier today, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu said Verizon might balk at paying up to three times its usual price for a smartphone. A more likely scenario could be Apple turns to T-Mobile or Sprint to expand its iPhone distribution in the United States, the analyst argues.
On Tuesday, several analysts said a deal with Verizon was ‘unlikely,’ pointing to China or Japan as potentially the first countries to sell the CDMA-based iPhone.
Despite seeming to throw water on the Verizon connection, Gardner was steadfast in the belief between 6 million and 7 million CDMA iPhones would be produced in 2010.

I won't use anything that doesn't have a physical keyboard, so I have no interest in the iphone. The Droid works well for me, has a shitload of apps, a keyboard, plays music, etc etc. I guess if you already are an apple user, the iphone is a good way to integrate all of your stuff. There was a time when I wanted one for apps, but the android phones have tons of them now.

AT&T extends exclusivity with Apple, no Verizon iPhone until 2011?
Take this one with the largest grain of salt that you can find…the latest rumor on the status of the Verizon Wireless iPhone suggests that the phone may not come to fruition until 2011. As we all know, AT&T is offering data plans for the iPad on a non-contract basis at the lowly price of $15 for 250MB of data and $30 for unlimited data. According to analyst Brian Marshall of BroadPoint AmTech, AT&T would not have agreed to such a drastic price reduction, and no-contract plans, without receiving something big from Apple in return. That “big something”, he hypothesizes, is an extension of the iPhone exclusivity agreement that AT&T currently has enjoyed with Apple in the U.S. Under this quid pro quo agreement, AT&T’s exclusivity would be extended until the end of 2010, effectively shuttering any plans to launch the iPhone on Big Red in 2010.

Here's the thing: so much has leaked about Apple working on a CDMA phone that could work on Verizon, it's probably true.
I think the way to figure out which Apple rumors might be true and which ones are absolute bullshit is to sort of look at it and see which ones keep coming up. If a story appears out of nowhere, and has only one person saying it, it's probably bullshit. But if it's a story getting some real play, there's something to it.

Out of curiosity, You started this thread saying Verizon getting the iPhone is a done deal, It's absolutely going to happen, no doubt about it. Then you posted in that other thread that Apple must have made a deal with AT&T that will prevent that. Which scenario are you leaning towards now as the date of the announcement is coming? I actually posted that I had suspicions about AT&T's exclusivity being extended when the Ipad was first released back in Jan/Feb. THEN came the announcement in the WSJ about the Verizon Iphone.
My original train of thought is that Verizon is not going to get the Iphone until their 4G network is rolled out. As most people keep their phones for 2 years, Verizon wants the best possible network and not screw people by having people with 3G phones on a 4g capable network.
We'll know in a month. At this point, I'm leaning towards Verizon NOT getting the Iphone until next year.

Many years ago, I waited forever for Verizon to get the Motorola Razr. Then, a while after that, I waited for Verizon to get the BB Curve. Both times, I kept hearing that it would be next month or later this quarter. Verizon's service was always great, but they were always late getting the phones I wanted.
After months of waiting for a Verizon iphone. I debated whether to wait and see if Verizon came out with a 4g iphone early this year since Verizon is starting to roll out 4g in South Florida. Finally said fuck it, switched to Sprint, and picked up Samsung Epic 4g's for my wife and myself. We could not be happier. So far, Sprint coverage and signal strength has been perfect. Got the phones for $99 each, and I'm saving $50 per month on the plan. I have a fun phone, 4g signal (which I don't even use much) with a keyboard if I want to use it, and every app I can think of, for less money every month. Even at 3g speed, the Epic is MUCH faster on the internet than my BB ever was. At this point, I couldn't care less whether Verizon ever gets the iphone. Fuck em; I would have paid handsomely for it years ago, if they had it.

Sprint is so fucking bad up here in the NY Metro area it isn't even on the radar for most of us. Choice is never a terrible thing, but I can't imagine it having the impact it would have a year ago even. Droid's platform through Motorolla and HTC among others have significantly changed the need here. I'm sure some apple freaks will make the trade quick if not already wtih AT&T, but I don't see many advantages to the IPhone at this point. Battery is a huge one I can think of off the top of my head.

As for sprint. I had sprint for 7 years then TMobile for 6 years and then Metro. I have never had any service problems with any of them. Metro lost some calls but its still building its network but it also didnt happen often just a couple of times. Maybe its because Im so close to NYC and we have tons of towers? I think Verizon is as happy as can be about that. They get their iPhone and Google still stands as a more than viable competitor to Apple and, to Verizon, a more financially lucrative partner. Verizon was locked out of the iPhone for how long now? And yet they are still the number one wireless carrier in the US.
It's Apple who missed their chance to lock down the smartphone market. By choosing a short-sighted money grab with a long-term exclusive deal with a wireless carrier (and AT&T at that) they allowed an outside carrier (in this case Verizon) to team up with just about every other cell phone manufacturer (Motorola, Samsung, HTC, LG) and champion Android, allowing it to skyrocket in popularity.
If iPhone had gone to all the carriers immediately, or at least after a very short-term exclusivity period, Android would have never blown up like it has.

Matty if you really want a iPhone they make cases that attach the to the phone that have a psychical keyboard. I haven't seen or used one but they are all over the net. I think if you use the touch screen for a week or two you will eventually adapt to it.

I couldn't imagine ever living without a physical keyboard before. I got my blackberry storm and was lost for quite some time, and never thought I'd get used to it.
You get used to it and stop caring about it after a while. Your solution is to turn the iphone into a brick. Just buy a jitterbug, grandma.
OK. Listen carefully: I got a phone with a touch screen keyboard. I tried using it. A lot. In case I wanted to go to Iphone. I didn't like it. I couldn't get used to it.
My Iphone solution was custom-made by think geek, a company that SEES A MARKET.
Again, this isn't about "getting used to it" - people don't like change. YOUR experience should not be uniform for EVERYONE. Some people like chocolate, some people like vanilla.

That's pretty much what I meant by my point, not the Verizon angle Udog took. I won't be running out to switch, but will look at both when getting a new phone perhaps. That's about it. Last year however I would have jumped on the Iphone, but leaving Verizon wasn't worth it for me.

iphone will probably never have a full non touchscreen keyboard. I cant see them going backwards even though many people feel the exact same way as you about it. I have never liked touch screens either but I have been using the one on my tablet e reader thing and it hasnt been bad. But then again its 7" not 3" like cellphone keyboards are!

Yes, two digital applications that don't work for me, period. It's not the same, I've used it all and still use cals like that but not in transit/in the field that often. The point is, some people like different versions and it actually saves me a TON of time versus putting it all into a dig calendar along with all my constant notes and updates. Dial up is 20 steps backwards, not a preference in media.

I get emails with conference calls and meeting dates, and I can just click on the right side of my gmail and it adds it to the calendar. I then get email and phone updates prior to the meeting. I'm in agreement. There's always kinks with the first release of a product, especially the Iphone. I would not be an early adopter on this - I'd wait.
Plus Verizon is doing away with early upgrades, so it you want the phone, you're stuck with it for 20 months at least. So I'd wait for the 5th gen.

If Verizon gets the 5th gen in June when AT&T gets it. I don't see that happening since they just released a Verizon iPhone a few months before Apple usually refreshes their phones. Maybe they are waiting to do the 5th gen next year? Maybe Verizon will get it also? I've read a few places that Verizon will get the new iPad 2, I wonder if AT&T will get it? I'm sure we will find out soon since it's almost time for the iPad refresh.

From a production standpoint, doesn't make sense to have VZW one generation behind AT&T, unless that was the out AT&T gave for the mythical exclusivity contract - VZW is allowed the Iphone, but it's always six months behind AT&T.
Doesn't make sense to me though. I'm guessing when Iphone 5 comes out, it's for both. Like the Ipad has wifi and 3G.

With a verizon store pretty much in every town in America, plus with a pre-sale and it being available on the net, why would you think there would be lines around the block?

Apple and Verizon apparently thought there would be.

They underestimated how huge the pre-sale would be. So it's basically a wash. End result = Apple and Verizon have sold a metric fuckton of Iphones in less than a week.

They also announced they were only releasing about 100,000 at launch, most of which went to presales. Makes sense that there wouldn't be huge lines.

Also some people aren't that excited about this since it's just the same generation phone on a different carrier. I think a lot of people will be holding out to see if they announce the "iPhone 5" in June.
BTW if you have AT&T they are giving you 1,000 rollover mins for free
AT&T handing over 1000 free rollover minutes to all of its customers (http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/11/atandt-handing-over-1000-free-rollover-minutes-to-all-of-its-custo/)
