Shank or butt? Seems to be pretty split when googling it... What do you think? Also, pre-sliced or not? I've never been in charge of the Easter ham until this year...

Pre-sliced? I didn't even know they sold them that way.
I am very excited for mother's Easter ham this weekend.

They come in shanks and butts and then sliced/unsliced. They obviously get more complicated than that once you start looking into fancy hams. I'm just talking about a simple grocery store hams (http://www.sugardale.com/Ham.aspx)...

Depends....how are you going to prepare it?

My wife wants to do coke or dr pepper glaze - I really don't know much about cooking hams. The few times I've done them, they were the pre-sliced ones...

If your glazing and baking then either the shank or butt will work fine and for ease of delivery at the table go spiral.
If on the other hand you were going to smoke then its butt all the way (need the higher fat content to keep it moist) and not spiral cut as it will start to fall apart.
Enjoy!

Thanks - I'm probably going to go shank and do the bake/glaze method with coke or dr pepper. It sounds like the shank is better for the bone for soups and is easier to cut. I'll try to take a pic. Happy Easter.

You've never seen a spiral cut ham?
BTW... Channel 4 in DC aired a taste test today. They compaired Honey Baked, Giant grocery store brand, and some super expensive mail order ham from New York. The store brand beat them all.

i've actually never cooked a ham for myself. my chick doesn't eat pork so it's not really that economical to cook a whole ham.

While I love a well prepared turkey (more then anything else for the stuffing and crispy skin) I have to admit that its a nice change of pace to have a holiday ham. I agree that its not at all practical to cook one for just a few people. That said the upside is leftover ham is more versatile then turkey...and like ace said it makes great soup!

I don't know why, but I can't think of anything that goes as well with ham, as mac and cheese. I make it every time.

I made a small pork roast a few months ago with a cherry glaze. It had cherry preserves and cherry coke along with some other things. I can track it down if that sounds good to you.

Oh, and alton browns recipe from his show looks outstanding. It has crumbled up ginger snaps and I think dr pepper to make a crust. I've always wanted to try it.

This is based on enough for a 3lb pork roast:
10 oz jar cherry preserves
1/4 cup cherry coke
2 tbsp karo syrup
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves (I didn't have cloves and left it out)
Combine all ingredients and bring to boil stirring constantly. Reduce heat simmer 2 mins. Keep mixture warm and spoon some of mixture on roast. Cook for about 30 mins (I would have probably prefered 45 mins to 1 hour to set up a little more but the roast came up to temp quick). Continue basting for the cook time. Serve remaining as a garnish.
I thought the recipe was fantastic and will definitely use it again.

His recipes are usually the first I look to for something. I'm finally starting to master his waffle recipe. Made it about 6 times.

I saw his fucking diet show recently and he was pushing sardines and smoothies.
Smoothies are good, but who needs a recipe? Making shit up is half the fun.
And sardines...seriously what the fuck?
