As a guitar player, you will need to learn 2 things....
1) how to play the guitar (meaining: getting comfortable in finger positioning & picking)
2) Music Theory (the fundamental elements the make up musical harmony)
You should 1st just worry about getting comfortable...
go to <p><a href="http://www.tabcrawler.com/search/">http://www.tabcrawler.com/</a></p>
and look up the TABLATURE for some of your favorite (EASY) songs
also, Pick up a Beginer theory book on learning guitar, so it can show you Finger exercises
Once you become comfortable w/ the gutiar you can then Enter the World of MUSIC THEORY (chord structure, scales, modes, progressions...Basically it's all Mathematical equations)

i tried to teach myself last year while i was away at school. get yourself a book, they're pretty cheap. you need a lot of time and patience (which i did not have). just keep at it

P.S. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME GETTING A TEACHER.... 99% OF THE TIME YOU GET A FAILED JAZZ MUSICIAN DOUCH BAG THAT WILL RIP YOU OFF AND TEACH NOTHING OF WHAT YOU NEED....Don't mind me I'm just Venting

<p>Tablature or Tab for short, is a system of notation for the guitar. This
reference will focus on the type of tablature that is found on the Internet.
While Internet tablature has many things in common with tab found in magazines
and books, there are many differences.</p>
<p>Tablature consists of 6 lines, one for each string of your guitar. Some
tablature will have 7 lines if a 7-string guitar is being used, or 4 or 5 lines
for bass. Keep in mind that the lowest line is the lowest sounding string. </p>
<p>E---------------------------------1st sting-----<br>
B---------------------------2nd string----------<br>
G---------------------3rd string----------------<br>
D---------------4th string----------------------<br>
A---------5th string----------------------------<br>
E---6th string----------------------------------</p>
<p>The numbers represent the frets that you put your fingers on. For example: 3
means the third fret, and a 0 means an open string.</p>
<p>3rd fret open string<br>
| |<br>
E-------3------------0----------<br>
B-------------------------------<br>
G-------------------------------<br>
D-------------------------------<br>
A-------------------------------<br>
E-------------------------------</p>
<p>Tablature is read from left to right. If you see something like the example
below, just play the notes in the order that you see them.</p>
<p>E-----------------------<br>
B-----------------------<br>
G--------------5--------<br>
D--------5--7-----7-----<br>
A-----7-----------------<br>
E-----------------------</p>
<p>Tablature usually does not indicate which finger you should use. But here is
at least a basic guideline to help. Take an inventory of all of the notes in a
phrase or part of a song. The lowest note you might play with your 1st finger,
and the others play in relationship to that. For example, in the previous
exercise there was a note on the 5th fret, and 7th fret. You would use your 1st
finger to play the 5th fret and your 3rd finger to play the 7th fret. You have 4
fingers, use one finger per fret in a 4 fret area as a basic guide. Keep in mind
that this is a very general guideline, and not everything is as clear cut as the
above example.</p>
<p>Knowing these basics about tablature will help you get started playing a
wealth of songs available here at TabCrawler. But there are some more specific
symbols that you need to be aware of when on your guitar tablature journey. One
thing to keep in mind, is that this system of notation is far from being
standardized. I will try to show you the most common symbols used, but the
person who wrote a particular piece of tablature sometimes uses their own non
standard symbols. They might even use the wrong name for a particular technique,
which can be very confusing. Get a recording of the song you are working on, and
use your ear along with the tab to help you.</p>

The best way to learn is to get a tab book for a group you like (I got one for the Beatles, for example) and learn those songs. Most will show you the chord shapes right there on the tab. I don't really think it's worth learning trad. notion - everything is tabbed these days. I'm not too big on learning all that music theory crap either, but that's up to you.
Good luck!

I tought myself guitar when I was 13. Pick up a classical book and learn that way. Once you can play classical you can play anything. You can try tablature, but I would suggest learning how to read music. I also play trumpet, bass and some piano!

posing with your guitar is probably the most important thing. Look at the"how to play" video covers, then you'll develop intensity. then smoke a lot of pot and jump into a jam session. Keep your tongue out and women's clothing. You'll be a rock star in no time.

I started with lessons, and they're a ripoff. Who really needs to know how to only play the beginning of Stairway? And a bunch of other shit some teacher is going to spring on you. I got a Mel Bay Encyclopedia of Chords, and put on my favorite albums and figured it out. It was great being able to jam along with The Ramones, The Stones, The Pistols, and The Replacements all in one afternoon. You can learn alot from your guitar influences by playing along with them. It took me a long time though, so maybe it'll work better for you. Soon enough, you'll be obsessed and want to play all the time. It's good. And don't worry about it being a Harmony. Harmony made fine quality instruments easily accessible. They have a great history as a company and influence on the modern guitar. Just take it to a local shop and have a tech set it up properly. And before you learn anything else. Learn proper tuning and how to keep it in tune. Most important.. <img src="http://www.virtue.nu/atamichimpo/skidbobsig.jpg" border="0" />

Skidmark, I couldn't have said it any better myself!! It's the exact way I learned; a Mel Bay chord book and a stack of records to play along to. I am totally self-taught, and as a result, can jam with anyone.
I've known several guitar players who were taught by a teacher, and if they hadn't learned the song in class, they couldn't play it. What good is that?

I took lessons, and sometimes a teacher can be helpful. Most teachers don't know jack about guitar, but if you know what to look for in a teacher, you'll get results.
If you want a plan of action, experiment with open chords first(chords that sound good without using all of the strings) and take note of their shapes that you make with your fretting hand. tell me if that does anything.
