I went for my annual physical last week which included a bunch of blood work. Got a call from my doc this morning and turns out that I've become diabetic.
I'm not overweight, for the most part eat healthy, don't smoke.....only lifestyle factors that work against me is I have a stressful job (I understand stress can contribute to diabetes) and my blood pressure is on the high side of normal. I do have a first generational link to diabetes (my Mom) but didn't think this would be an issue till much later in life.
Despite being assured by my doctor that this is manageable (and treatable for at least the time being without injections) I'm still fairly bummed.

sorry to hear that man. i get checked for it a lot because it runs in my family. good thing is, if you take care of yourself and stay on top if it, it is easily manageable.

Sorry to hear it. At least you caught it early and it should be managable.
Good luck.
I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 22...since the common theory is that your antibodies turn on your healthy cells after fighting off an infection (thus destroying the pancreas), I'm not the role stress plays on that process...if you are type 1, it would be a safe bet that you had a pretty good infection in the near past...
I agree with the other posts...it is controllable...I have an insulin pump now and it is a lot easier to control than before...

Thx for the comments.
week, good you're getting tested and tub, you're absolutely right from what I've learned in the brief reading I've done so far early diagnosis is the key
dell, thanks for chiming in...always good to hear from someone who can relate....I believe the doctor said type 2 which stands to reason given my age.....he was specific in saying that we'd start off with attempting to manage this pharmaceutically (metformin @ 500mg bid)....as for the stress connection I found this interesting:

dino....thx for the lolly pops  but if you really want to help tell my how I can sue my pancreas
look on the bright side, you now have something in common with Fez. (2 things if you have a secret too)

Great.....now all I need is constant self-loathing, a wardrobe picked by Stevie Wonder, a pet I hate, a co-worker who pulls about 99% of the weight and a ginger who drives me nuts

see, now you are looking towards the future. that's a good sign.

At least the doctor caught it before you were feeling it. I had a messed up thyroid for years. It made me overweight and crazy. I knew something was wrong. I was exercising a lot and barely eating, but kept putting on weight. The doctors just kept giving me antidepressants, those didn't help the constant anxiety. I finally found a doctor about 6 years ago that figured out the problem. So I'll be on medication for the rest of my life and have to have my blood tested every 3 to 6 months. I feel better these days. If I get anxious or depressed it's because something bad is happening, not just cause I'm crazy. Once I started the medication I stopped being a fatty.
Anyway, I guess it's a good thing that the doctor found out you are diabetic before anything bad happened.

Im 24 and have Type 2. Although all my docs tells me that it can go away if i lose the weight. Ya think that would be a wake-up call. But i still eat like shit, i dont take my insulin really, as I used Byetta injections and also have Metformin 500mg. My dad died recently in December. He died of Liver cancer but before that he had Pancreatic cancer, which was removed surgically. IDK if diabetes had anything to do with his liver though.
I'd tell ya to hang in there and take care of your self, but then Id be contradicting my self.
Dude!

Wow...you had classic thyroid
symptoms, and they 'kept giving'
you antidepressants?
it must have been a
canadian doctor
an american doctor would have
figured that out within 12 seconds

Pen.....wow, thats amazing. I'm fortunate that my doc (who by the way dude! is american born and trained) has a background in biochemistry and he seems to enjoy sending his patients for blood tests. At the collection lab they know him and don't seem to like him since I assume he causes them much more work than most of the other docs out there.
Nicky....all I can tell ya is that taking care of yourself gets harder with age and MUCH harder after you turn 30. But you're an adult so the motivation needs to come from you.
zildjian....thats some funny shit
i hang out with alot of alcoholics with it and as long as they dont do dumb things
Like drink to excess?
Oh, and I just realized how inappropriate my board name is. I picked it when Opie told the story about his nuts being in a knot and having to soak them. Since I've had a vasectomy I guess mine can't get twisted.

I really feel good when I see this much hope and energy in you, I am sure you will be an example to all diabetics people as a person who live happily with diabetes.

After hearing the replay this saturday and fez's candy dish raids, i was going to post about my newly diagnosed dabeties. Thats when i ran accross your post. I've spent the last few months going to the doctors and the clinics to figure out how i should be living my life, it has been a huge kick in the nuts, i know how you feel. I tried to fool myself into thinking i have been doing things ok but thats not the case. The foods i choose are bad in the amounts i eat them. There is alot of information that you should know. I would highly suggest going to one of the dabetic clinics, and if you have covereage check to see if you can see a diabetic dietician for counseling.
