Particularly those in the NY/NJ area... Who do you get your auto insurance through? What company do you recommend/Who should I stay away from? And how much do you pay?

You're in New York, so it varies state to state.
Did your dad serve in the military? If so, you may want to look into USAA. Consumerist rates them huge on rates and satisfaction.

Don't have a car anymore, but when I did, I had USAA. Loved it.

It depends on what you are looking for, full coverage? Also what type of car? If you have a clean record as well as no accidents, I use Allstate. But call them. I am paying around $800 for full coverage for 6 months. And if you get into the special program they take a few dollars off as well as lower your deductible. I have them for 6 months and now my deductible is $400. And every 6 months if I don't have a accident, they lower the deductible by $100.
As for service, I heard bad things about Geico. But that was not me. I use to use All-State but every year they keep raising my rates and I did not have anything..not even a ticket.
Also take the defensive driving course..boring as shit but it takes 10% off your insurance. And if you get like a Lo-Jack that also takes 10%.
Or you could just count on the great, never mismanaged MTA...Yea right
Good LUCK

You should just try out some websites. State farm, allstate, nationwide, I believe most do free quotes on their websites.
I have Esurance myself and have had no problems about 5 years now. Always very nice CS
