I'm going with unagi-- cooked eel. I know it's cooked but it's my favorite.

Yellowfin tuna is my next fave.

I like to order sushi a la carte so I can try different things. I still go back to the eel.

My favorite and the litmus test for a sushi joint is the Saba Nigiri. Mackerel is cured (pickled), so it is technically cooked, but if a sushi chef can handle this oily pedestrian fish that spoils quickly, I figure everything else is cake. Not to mention the silver/black skin is beautiful.

I'll eat the hell out of some spicy tuna rolls.

I'm also a big fan of inari. If it's just rice, that's cool, but my favorite thing to pick up at my supermarket that has sushi here is inari with little crispy shrimp on it and a spicy sauce.

There is a Baked Salmon roll at this joint in Redondo Beach that is still the best roll I've ever had.

Never thought I'd say this but after the past week I need a break from sushi.

That said, LOVE smoked salmon sashimi, spicy tuna sashimi and found a crab roll that is nice. Not a fan of any thing with roe....don't like the popping in my mouth.

My favorite sushi i've ever had was at this place Seabar in buffalo, ny. They made the sushi version of Beef on Weck sandwich.

It replaces raw fish with a core of lightly cooked beef filet, and wraps the whole deal with some thin beef carpaccio. Served with horseradish cream, rock salt and caraway seeds. It is unbelievably good.

My second and third favs are the typical ones I get: Spicy Hot Tuna Roll and Alligator Roll (hit or miss with the eel).

escolar, aka white tuna. really high in fat, though, which throws out the "sushi as a healthy alternative" thing.

As far as rolls - spicey tuna or eel.

No shrimp.

Chutoro. Is that cheating? Not only my favorite piece of sushi, one of my top 5 favorite things to eat, period.

One of my all time faves is the lump of rice with a slice of salmon on it, just some soy sauce to dip it in.

I love rolls and eat those most of the time since they're so popular now, but that simple salmon on rice sushi is probably on top of my favorites.

I like the eel

I went to our local sushi - which is excellent - myself one night, high as
a kite, and overordered. I was like Rodney... One of these and one of those.

Well, they brought it out to me on a serving thing that was a ship, with sushi pieces all
lined up along the deck. It was like a foot long. I couldn't stop laughing.

I also ate every piece.

i had red snapper at a place in LA that was about the best thing i've ever had.

I like Philadelphia rolls, as unauthentic as they are...

High in good fat, like my favorite Saba. It is good for you. Relish those fatty acids.

Piece would be Salmon or Masago.

Roll would be Dragon.

Everyone seems to be lovin the different kinds of tuna nigiri. Next time, shell out an extra few bucks for an order of fatty tuna (Toro). It's fantastically buttery.

And rolls are for queers. Except a good negi-hama maki.

Or as ESD says, Rolls are for Minor Leaguers.

When I was in Japan a couple of years ago, the sushi chef gave me a piece of sushi that was a chinese fish (small, silver skin) that was only available in June and July...god it was out of this world. I'm going to e-mail my mother in law and see if she knows what it was called.

Rolls are more filling and keep it relatively economical. I order rolls, then sushi, then sashimi.

I agree. I love a good negi-hama to round out the meal, but I don't understand people that go to a sushi joint and get rolls with fried chicken and cream cheese. Guy Fieri's "Tex Wasabi's" restaurant in Santa Rosa is a sushi/barbecue/frat bar. Hideous. There are rolls that have 10 ingredients in them.
