A magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Chile late yesterday evening (10:34 PST), killing scores of people in Chile and causing Hawaii to brace for its biggest tsunami since the Alaskan earthquake of 1964.

The tsunami alert went out hours before the first waves, traveling at the speed of a passenger jetliner, were expected to hit Hawaii at 11:19 this morning, local time.

Tourists and coastal residents are expected to wake up to tsunami alarms and evacuation instructions several hours earlier, tsunami authorities told the Associated Press.

The earthquake occurred along the junction of the Nazca and South American tectonic plates, which are colliding off the coast of Chile at a rate of 80 millimeters per year.

The coastline of Chile is one of the most active tectonic zones in the world, with 13 temblors of magnitude 7.0 or greater since 1973, the U.S. Geological Survey reports on its earthquake-monitoring Website.

I can't wait for another "WE ARE THE WORLD" and so soon after the last one! Yippie!!!

All I want to say is that I made a simple little innocent joke about the Haiti earthquake as soon as the thread was posted and I was reemed out for over a week. You guys are all going to hell for making light of this.

This is a tragic situation. I just saw a distraught mother on the news running around the rubble of her home in Chile screaming "I want my baby back, baby back, baby back!"

Hey, let's not minimize this. If you were standing near the water when this hit, your pants would have gotten wet. Maybe if you had some papers in your pocket, the ink might run. Now things don't look so rosy, do they?

There is also some footage coming out of the strange lights in the sky right before the quake. This is a natural phenomenon that isn't well understood, but there were also lights seen before the 2004 Indonesian Quake and recent quakes in China.

Unfortunately, most of these videos will be labeled UFO or HAARP lights. They're still pretty cool though:

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4_iK1kG4TCo&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4_iK1kG4TCo&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

were they accidentally captured or why did the person filming this not walk around the damn tree for a better view?
I can see those lights 'emerging' before a quake from the magnetic energy, gravity and the sun's energy fields involved and the magnetic polarity changing when the ground expands and submerges.
Now I am going to be searching for videos of those lights :)

8.8 is huge. huge huge huge. and for 90 seconds. that magnitude and duration would challenge even the most earthquake-proof construction. The earthquake has actually made our days shorter by 1.26 microseconds, since it has shifted mass inwards. So like a spinning ice skater pulling their arms in, earth rotations has fastened.
