PROs and CONs, please. I am debating on signing a petition in Florida that would allow me to legally cure my chronic pain in my joints. A lot of jokes can be made from my use of, 'chronic' and 'joints' in that sentence but I am serious. Has anyone benefitted from this and if so, is it worth joining the 'grass' roots movement here in the Sunshine State?

Yes, I have a medical marijuana card. I can not think of any reason for you not to get medical marijuana card at all.

It would be great to have medical marijuana in Florida, I would be able to benefit from it. I have a feeling the Pain Clinics would have a big problem with it.

I have nothing against legalization and usage for medicinal, or even recreational, purposes. The problem with the pseudo-legalization that we have in California is the amount of crime that happens around the production and distribution of medical marijuana. The way it is now is kind of like if you legalized heroin and allowed anyone to produce it. There are always going to be criminals that will take advantage of the situation. In my county, we have armed robberies at least once a week at either medical marijuana grows or dispensaries. Many times, growers will be using stolen electricity for their indoor grows, which are horrible inefficient and sometimes result in significant damage to rental properties. We had a medical marijuana "co-op" that just got shutdown after months of criminal issues, such as trespassing, armed robbery, physical fights between residents, and it turned out that the bank had foreclosed the property a while back and the operators were not even supposed to be on the property. The pets that were at the property were in horrible shape as well.

Those people are criminals, trash, and bad human beings. There are good dispensaries, run by good people. They should be allowed to have their businesses. I don't know what county you are in, but it sounds scary. Be careful there.

I'm not saying that the dispensaries are bad people, but the way they run the business sometimes is not very professional. A local dispensary was robbed by men armed with shotguns, and their website advises their customers to never talk to law enforcement unless under arrest. Consider this when you visit a dispensary.
But the main aspect of medical marijuana crime comes from those that abuse their ability to grow 30 plants for personal use. I have been at one "medical grow" where a single card-holder was growing over 400 plants in plain view in a quiet, rural neighborhood. Because they used guard pit bulls to defend the property, and were using excessive amounts of their "medicine", the pit bulls were constantly running at large in the neighborhood and being aggressive towards the residents. This necessitated a multiple agency response with shotguns and sidearms drawn. A police officer warned the cardholder that thugs would eventually show up with guns and rob them. The kid went to court, got evicted, and moved his operation, and was later robbed by gun-wielding thugs.
A few towns over a man in his mid-60's was murdered and robbed by his two roommates who were legally growing marijuana in the garage.
This is not some isolated area, and I think if you look a little closer, you will find similar activity in your area (if you live in CA). Obviously, the examples I'm using all involve people who are abusing the marijuana laws, or are otherwise scum. My point is that these crimes are now occurring much more frequently in neighborhoods and cities, whereas in the past, it was fairly isolated to remote wilderness. There are plenty of minor abuses as well. I think we all understand that a percentage of 215 cardholders are not using the pot for medicinal purposes, but for recreation. I'm not denying any medicinal properties of it, but having a system that was voted in under the pretense of helping people with legitimate problems evolve into a loophole for stoners to get high will not garner support from the average voting citizen, and coupled with the increased crime, will likely harm any chance of legitimately legalizing the weed. I can't blame a stoner for going to the local weed doctor and getting a recommendation card so that he/she can get high without fear of going to jail, but I think their will eventually be a backlash.

Oh, I see it says you are from northern California. I am not familiar with how things are up there. I've only been up there a few times (and its so beautiful). In southern California we are only allowed 6 plants. Santa Barbara and Los Angeles are strict about enforcing the laws.

im in total support of medical marijuana.
a friend of mine ;) has been suffering from terrible migraines a few times a week for almost a year now. she sampled some "medicine" at a memorial day picnic and her migraines were gone for a week solid. it was amazing.
her migraines are now being controlled with birth control (which increases chances of heart attack and stroke) and high blood pressure medication (which causes dizziness, vomiting, and low blood pressure since its already normal). i see no reason why she should have to take all that when marijuana could do the same thing in a much safer manner.

if you have cronic problems you should come up to my town, the city had to pass an oridnance of not more than one store within 300 feet of another because they are opening up here so quickly,we were only supposed to have 4 but a coupla dozen places have applied for licences and now the original 4(that've only been opened for 1 or2 months) are trying to say the new places will turn this town into a drug oasis! you can't listen to local radio without hearing a medical marijuana commercial which is wierd cuz this has been the rehab/recovery center of michigan for 2 decades

So many of you are talking about how marijuana should be made medically available in Florida. There is even a Cancer Conference in Florida that will be partly discussing the benefits.
If you feel patients should have the right to talk to their doctors about their medicine instead of having to go through their legislators, then you need to get active in Florida.
Make sure you sign the Ballot Initiative from PUFMM.org
Make sure you write your representatives
