He "borrows" way too much to be an auteur. Each movie he makes, he essentially has a dozen co-writers and co-directors.

I dont think the way he pays homage to other work is a negative at all, it's integral to his auteurness. One of the career spanning themes of his work is a love letter to film. I dont think he's ever hidden that, or tried to water it down to make it more appealing. Post modernism deals heavily in combining and re experiencing trends, he's a post modern auteur.

Yeah, but "Mr. Brown", that's a little too close to "Mr. Shit."

I think there is enough new in Tarantino's productions that I would call him an auteur. He borrows quite a bit, but he tends to borrow mostly minor aesthetic and story archetypes.

If Tarantino isn't an auteur, which modern directors are?

I think I'm with RMHL and Melk. He has an identifiable visual style and certainly has a unique and entertaining voice in his screenplays so I think you have to give him auteur.

Now, is he an artist that adds something significant to the culture? Eh. Tougher standard to meet.
