Bayh retiring (http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0210/Bayh_retiring.html?showall)

Sen. Evan Bayh will not run for re-election, a decision that will shock Democrats and Republicans alike in Indiana.

In prepared remarks, Bayh, 54, cited excessive partisanship that makes progress on public policy difficult to achieve as the motivation for his decision.

“After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so in Congress has waned,” he said.

“My decision was not motivated by political concern,” he added. “Even in the current challenging environment, I am confident in my prospects for re-election.”

Bayh had never lost an election, from his first win in 1986 as secretary of state, his wins for governor in 1988 and 1992 and his election to the U.S. Senate in 1998 and 2004.

“But running for the sake of winning an election, just to remain in public office, is not good enough,” Bayh said. “And it has never been what motivates me. At this time I simply believe I can best contribute to society in another way: creating jobs by helping grow a business, helping guide an institution of higher learning or helping run a worthy charitable endeavor.”

February 19th is the filing deadline in Indiana for this office. I certainly hope this has been a coordinated effort with the Indiana Democratic Party, otherwise he just fucked dems in that state.

I think we'll see more and more politcians not running because of partisan bickering. It's too bad.

Explaining The IN Filing Process (http://hotlineoncall.nationaljournal.com/archives/2010/02/explaining_the.php)

Sen. Evan Bayh's (D-IN) decision to retire has sent Dems scrambling to figure out who will carry the party's standard -- and how to go about getting that person on the ballot in the first place.

Candidates running for statewide office in IN have to collect 500 signatures from each of the state's 9 districts. Those signatures are due by tomorrow.

Once signatures are in, candidates have until Friday to officially file for office.

Bayh could still file to run, then drop out. But if he does not file his signatures tomorrow, no other Dem is expected to collect the required 500 signatures by then, meaning Dems will get the chance to pick their own nominee. Some DC Dems say the process is the best-case scenario short of having Bayh on the ballot for a 3rd term; allowing the party to pick a nominee will avoid a primary.

Now this timing makes total sense...

Wait, I thought he was retiring because he was tired of partisan politics. Then he does this.

I'm aware and saddened by your sentiment. I have made it a firm rule to never interfere on the other sides ticket and condemn it when I see it.

I see its all class by the republicans these days.

than you first thought

Thats because I have a great ass.

However, this doesn't excuse partisan hacks interfering in the business of the other side. Its pure hackery.

Normal people wouldn't know who other state's Senators are. But in Indiana, the name "Bayh" is the gold standard. His father, Birch Bayh was beloved...and Evan was a 2-term Governor & 2-term Senator. In 2008, he was on the short-list for President Obama when he picked a Vice President.

No. Before the election seeing this guys background. I thought he should have made higher office. There is buzz that he thought so also. And this is part of his dropping out.

But in Indiana, the name "Bayh" is the gold standard.

Actually, it's either "Knight" or "Bird".
