I consider myself fairly computer savvy, but can't seem to get playlists to work the way I assume they should. :wallbash:

I am using MediaMonkey to organize my music. I create the playlists with it and they work fine when I am listening to music on my computer. But when I try to move the music to my mp3 player (Sansa clip), it doesn't work.

To transfer the music I select the playlist and then select "sync to device".

The songs end up on the device where I would expect them (in the music folder), the playlist is created where I would expect it to be (in the playlist folder) and the playlist looks like this when viewed with wordpad

\Music\Back In Black (RM)\Hells Bells.mp3
\Music\Back In Black (RM)\Shoot To Thrill.mp3
\Music\Back In Black (RM)\What Do You Do For Money Honey.mp3

When I unplug my mp3 device, it shows that my media is being refreshed, the music shows up, as does the playlist, but when I select the playlist and try to play it, I am told that the playliist is empty and nothing plays. I can select the music by "album" or "artist" and it plays correctly, but I can't play it by playlist on the mp3 player.

If I open windows explorer, and open the playlist folder on the mp3 player and try playing the playlist with another media player (VLC) it works fine. I even know that it is reading the music from the mp3 player because as it is playing, if I disconnect the player VLC stops playing.

Can someone explain what I am doing wrong ? :wallbash:

I have a sansa clip. And love it. Sorry I don't use playlists with it however.
Few things to looks for.=

Is there a playlist folder in the sansa clip drive (my computer)?
If so thats where mp3's should go.

Also I see RM in title you posted. See that those are real mp3's not real media.

Sorry for the confusion. The RM that you see in the album title stands for remastered. It just clarifies which version of an album I am using. All of my music is in mp3 format, which have been ripped from my own cds.

By default, there is no playlist folder on the Clip drive, I created that and was placing the playlists there. I reformatted the Clip to restore it to "like new" folder structure, and synced both the music and playlist to the MUSIC folder. Again, both the songs and the playlist are transfered to the Clip, and can be seen when I select what to play on the Clip, but the playlist STILL comes up as EMPTY when I try to play it.

web searches show me that there is a lot of confusion when it comes to getting playlists to work with this Clip.

Am I wrong in thinking that playlists and syncing should be VERY straight forward and simple ?

I know nothing of playlist file types, but I do know that with any .mp3 player I've ever owned, I make the playlists in that device's program. I've always assumed that playlists were device specific.

I seem to have corrected my problem.

Talk about a convoluted solution. Even though I am using MediaMonkey to manage my music and generate my playlists, I cannot sync things totally correctly unless I have Windows Media Player 11, installed on my computer.

It seems that without WMP11, the driver for syncing to my
mp3 player isn't correct and cannot be updated the normal way.
