Ok folks, I've decided that for my birthday this year I'm going to some steakhouse in the city (so I dont wanna hear your opinions about some place in jersey or chicago or california, keep it strictly new york city). Problem is, I don't know where to go. I want the best. I did some preliminary searching online and came up with a few names like Del Frisco's, Sparks, Strip House, Palm and BLT Prime. What are some great steakhouses that all have you have been to? What do you recommend? And please refrain from dropping Lugars into this conversation, its not happening.

Can't beat the "Tomahawk" steak from Del Fresco's. Although the "family style" sides are okay but not the family type style portions that you expect in certain restaurants.

The best steak house in NYC if not the countr is Wolfgangs. I have never had a steak that good in my life. I have been to Sparks, Lugers, Mortons, Ruth Chris, Palm, Strip House and they cant even come close to Wolfgangs.

Wolfgangs is great but its very much like Peter Lugar. Not sure what was the reason you are avoiding Lugars. I'd avoid the striphouse. If you're looking for a steakhouse, I'd have to go with Wolfgangs. If you're looking for where you'll get the best steak, there are a few non-steakhouses that I think have better steaks. Like Bar Americain, or Craft. Angelo and Maxies used to be great but I havent been there in years.

First, thanks. Secondly, my reason for avoiding Lugars is twofold. Ive been there, I want to go somewhere I havent been and I didnt really think it was all that great. Dont get me wrong, it wasnt like the steak sucked but i wasnt as impressed with it as others are.

In a slightly different direction, I had fantastic steak at this Argentinian steakhouse:

Industria Argentina (http://www.iatribeca.com/index2.htm)

They've got a great wine list, too.

In terms of traditional places, I've heard great things about Old Homestead, but haven't been there myself.

If it was my birthday - which is next Saturday - I'd go to Old Homestead in the Meatpacking, or I'd throw on the coat and tie and eat in the Bar at the 21 Club.

To be completely honest, Ive been disappointed with most of the well known steakhouses in NYC. I havent tried Ben Bensons though, and always wanted to. :)

Smith and Wollenskys on 47th and 3rd. A bit pricey but well worth it. Get the seafood tower as an appy

I've been to a few NYC steakhouse (Luger's, Strip House, Sparks, Old Homestead, Uncle Jacks, etc) and my favorite in definitely Keen's. All of the food is great, plus they have a mutton chop which is OUT OF THIS WORLD if you want to mix it up. Service has always been excellent (and friendly).
