went to Giants training camp for a couple days this past week with other bigbluechip.com writers.
the major things that I came away with is that Lindval Joseph is a fucking beast of a human being. Derek Hagan looked awesome, he might have been the most impressive of anyone. Great hands, solid routes, good size.
They didn't let Barden or Nicks really let loose and they looked ok. Little Timmy Brown was really small and needs to make an impression returning kicks.
A kinda cool experience but not worth watching more than a practice or two.
Jets in 3 days.

Rex Ryan can curse on HBO and run his mouth all day long, but Tom Coughlin and the Giants kept their mouths shut and kicked his fat ass tonight. Granted, it was a worthless pre-season game played predominantly by 2nd and 3rd string players, but it was still nice to humble the king of shit-talking for one night.

It's risky bc it doesn't take much to set off a locker room in the wrong direction, especially with a coach already on the hot seat. This guy is a locker room cancer, bc that's the only place he's contributed in the recent future. He may end up working out, but I find it funny some of the commentary in this thread seem to be with rose colored glasses bc it involves their team. You basically make it sound like you have no problem with the move even if it doesn't work and goes into the shitter. High expectations and standards you guys have.

I do understand the man has some real "fez-like" mental issues too, so I feel for the guy. However, it's been reported that it's a combo of lazines, attitude problems AND mental issues. That's a whole lot of things to "work out" even if he is 28. I'd think a small market team would be best for him, but we'll see.

Fair enough..
6 isnt bad..
Sucks that Barden got hurt.
He would have been a wepon in the redzone at least with fade routes.
The key is Oline has to bounce back and they have to have SOME running game or the team is shit.

It's almost worse than getting your doors blown off, more frustrating as fan at least. In between all the penalties and turnovers the Giants outplayed the Titans in this game. That was one of the most painful Giants games I've watched and you know we have had our share over the years.
What made this loss so disappointing was this was a defining game. Week one the Giants beat Carolina who as it looks like right now is one of the worst teams in league. They got trounced by Indy but in reality whoever played Indy under those circumstances, coming off a loss and playing at home, was gonna get knocked around. Tennessee is not an elite team, not a bad team either, they are a team that should be in the playoff hunt this year. This was a chance for the Giants to show who they really are, and if that’s who the Giants we are in for a long season.

The Giants will unveil their Ring of Honor on Sunday, with the induction of 30 former executives, players and coaches. QB Phil Simms, coach Bill Parcells and DE Michael Strahan will be among those honored, but it has not been announced whether troubled LB Lawrence Taylor will be included.

Yeah I am all mixed up... I grew up in Central N.J. so when I was young and impressionable we got both Philly and NY stations. I was a big Mike Schmidt fan coming up so fortunately ( well not so fortunate from about 85 - 05 ha-ha) I became a Phillies fan. a win is a win is a win. not at all pissed about Giants only beating the Lions by 8. it would have been a different story if Eli threw three pics, and we lost 80+ yards on penalties, but it was a pretty clean game for the G-Men. no INT, thank god.....really no major penalties....and i think for the first time this season, we escaped without the dreaded delay of game call. Special Teams even seemed to get their shit together after Dodge fumbled the first punt.....and this whole time, all he needed was a glove on his left hand...who knew? I think Darius Reynaud is going to bust loose for a few returns by the end of the season if we keep him in there....Giants haven't had a really good punt returner in a long long time, and Reynaud looked like he was gonna get some space a few times on sunday....I wouldn't be surprised if he takes one to the house against the Cowboys next week.
Lions played some pretty good defense during that game, but kept shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and turnovers. I'm still insanely frustrated watching Gilbride call a 3 yard passing play when we're 3rd down and 12 to go. i really wish they would let Eli take control and let him run from the no-huddle for most of the game....it would eliminate the weekly delay of game penalties, and we'd save so many time-outs which we need to take to avoid the stupid penalty. some frustrating moments yesterday, but like i said, a win is a win is a win, and we're 4-2 so i'm not complaining too much.

he'll come around....he's fast as shit and i think we'll get some solid returns from this guy. he's already got 300+ in kickoff returns and we've only had him for a month. His punt returning needs improvement, but if they can get Dodge kicking the ball well, which he did yesterday after the botched punt in the 1st, i'm gonna guess they can get the fastest dude we've had on returns in a while to break free a few times this season.

Eli's problem is he still thinks that he is throwing to Plaxico Burress. He's in the habit of throwing everything high because Plax was so tall. Steve Smith is like a midget compared to Burress, yet Eli still keeps throwing it 10 feet over his head.
Until he breaks this habit and realizes Plax isn't coming back, then the INTs will continue.

Snoogans......you win......Reynaud blows camels. ran right into traffic a couple times last night and got popped.
Dodge seems to have found his comfort zone though.....aside from making a horrible mistake kicking, what really was an excellent punt, to Dez Bryant he's been playing better.
With Hixon and Moss on IR who goes back for returns if its not Reynaud? Barden? Calhoun? tough choices there.
anyway, i was happy about the win last night, but we can NOT nearly give up an entire 18 point lead with 4min to go in the 4th....a better team would have beaten us at the end of the game. A better team would have also converted a lot more of those turnovers.

Yep. And many of those INTs were because of those high passes way over the receivers head. I just can't stand Eli, he has very little versatility.
And on a similar note.... the Giants D just got a major blow. This is going to hurt us big time. (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/football/nfl/10/28/kiwanuka.ap/index.html?eref=sihp#)

i'm actually ok with this.....Kiwanuka has been gone for the past 4 games and to be honest, i haven't really noticed. His IR placement couldn't come at a better time either.....Kiwi goes to IR, and we pick up Blackmon from the Packers. Blackmon gets a whole week and a half to work out with Big Blue during the bye week, and by the time Nov 7th rolls around, it'll be like he's been there the whole time. Sounds like they're going to use him for returns as well.

Barden is way too big for that role so my guess would be a lesser wr or db at this point, even though Reynaud will continue to get the work in my mind.
As for Eli, he hasn't played that badly and a TON of his ints are actually directly a result of a mistake by the wrs (right off their hands and into the dbs). Game one for example it seemingly happened on every other drive. Take those 3 and more off the books and his stats are pretty darn good. I'm not saying he's elite right now, but he's surely not the issue if there is one compared to the rest of the league. The Giants are sitting pretty solid right now at the bye, with even Jacobs coming back to help the running game of late.
Tenbatsuzen

I still wonder if a new INT category is needed, for Touch Before Interception, or TINT. Interceptions that are not direct results of the QB throwing it to an opposing player. They would still be treated as a turnover, but would affect the QB's rating differently.

this is why i constantly argue there there should be a differential in the INT stats for QB's....much like the difference btwn a pass ball and a wild pitch in baseball. people get fucking nuts when i bring this idea up though.
Jacobs has been awesome lately.....and going back to the returns situation, Barden and Calhoun are our only other receivers besides manningham, smith, and nicks. although, the report about picking up Blackmon from the packers made it sound like there were going to use him for returns as well. could be problem solved right there, though, i'm not so sure i've ever seen a guy start on D and then handle punt and kickoff returns too.

I don't think so. I mean, it's a really easy play to judge. a Touch Before Interception should be when a player on the same team as the QB (usually a receiver) has contact with the ball that leads to an interception. It is not the same as a defensive player batting/touching the ball and then is intercepted by another defender.
Your wild pitch/passed ball corollary is dead on. A wild pitch (INT) is the thrower's fault, the passed ball (TINT) is the receiver's fault.
They have stats for everything else in football, why NOT this?

See, here's the thing...
When the QB throws the ball and it is in catching distance of a WR, he's done everything right. Once the WR touches the ball and directly affects the flight of the ball, everything that happens to that ball past the touch is on him.
What I cannot STAND is when WRs touch the ball, the ball pops up in the air, and they just stand around and don't D the ball at all.
Refresh my memory on PI - if a D player touches the ball in flight, PI rules are off for D, but what about if an O player touches the ball?

Yes, but if a defensive player touches the ball in-flight, then pass interference rules are off.
I.E. if Eli throws a pass and a LB on the line gets a hand up to block it and affects the spiral of the ball but doesn't stop it, PI isn't called. PI is only up to the point of contact - so if the ball if live, and touched before getting to receivers... fair game.
So if that's the rule, I do wonder why not on the touch before INT rule?
When someone freaks out about this, ask this question: The QB did everything right in getting the ball to his receiver. Receiver affected the ball. So why should the stat negatively affect the QB?

Or they simply think a rule like that is way to grey and all qb's play by the same set of rules in regard to rating. It all evens out and there is no need to put that stat into the mix. What's next, when a qb throws it right into the hands of the D and they drop it equals negative points? I think the rating system is so odd anyway, most casual fans rate their qb's based on winning and simply what they see. I'm not a fan of adding more grey area to any rule. If so, we'll start seeing picks being ruled as not the qb's fault all over as errors get ruled hits to save Jeter's chances at gold gloves. Leave it be.

That's my issue with Eli right now (and it seems...for a long time) if you look close at those passes that went off the receivers hands a LOT of those passes were overthrown by Eli. To a receiver who was double covered I might add. Take the 1st INT from the Dallas game. That's a classic case of Eli throwing the ball way too high, the receiver needing to jump in the air to get it, and it being too high. (I think Smith was the intended receiver at that point. I didn't see it, was on my way home from work)
You can only blame the receiving corps so much, but look at the passes they are getting thrown.
Oh and 5 turnovers is a sloppy ass win in my book. I just wonder if we are as good as some analysts are saying. We've been in this position before the classic collapse.

amen brutha...amen..
and i'm not sure about what the PI rules officially say, but i think anytime a player, offensive or defensive, impedes another player from catching the ball before it gets there, the flag gets thrown.
As long as the ball is catchable. If it's nowhere in the vicinity of the receiver then the flag should NOT be thrown.

Ok...*sigh*....I saw the play on the highlights on ESPN (they made a point to show the near-INT and then the INT on the very next play) both passes was overthrown and were touched by the receiver. One just happened to be an INT. (lucky it wasn't both)
The only thing I couldn't remember was who the ball was being thrown to.

Maybe. It depends on how well their O line is. And judging by their W-L record I'd say not that great.
Again this will be an example of we SHOULD win. And by a mile. But let's see if the Giants play down to their opponent like they have in the past.

In a league where you play 16 games for a season there is no such thing as ONLY one game unless you start the season at 0-8 like Buffalo. Every game is as important as the one before and the one after.
But you do make two good points. Yes they are usually crappy on the west coast. And they have always had a habit of playing down to the opponent. Glad to see that changed at least for today.
Our biggest game in the next three weeks is actually Philly. They are the closest to us. If we can beat them in Philly that would be a huge advantage.
I've seen Giants teams who were at 6-2 and went to 8-8 by seasons end. Let's hope that isn't going to happen this year.

You may in fact be retarded. The Seahawks are much better at home and were never beaten at home by the Giants EVER until then. So no, I wouldn't say it should have been a 34 pt win...EVER.
And the team's O-line must be bad bc of their record? You make quite loose deductions don't you. Now that's analysis baby! They did have some injuries on the O-line so you know, but it's their ROAD record that is hurting them right now, along with losing their starting qb.

Ok...we played good solid defense. No sacks but two picks (one in the end zone) and every time the O touched the ball we did damage. Pretty much what you should expect with the talent on this team.
Have you seen any of the Seahawks games? They got slammed by the Raiders last week and for a while they were the ONLY win in the Vikings cap. AND their starting QB goes down and the guy to replace him never took a snap in the NFL in his life! And he goes up against one of the most damaging D line in the whole league and you call ME Retarded? Check yourself there Spoony or I might think you really are watching DWTS with your bestest buddy there instead of football.

also, we're talking about the seahawks and yes I have watched them play, especially when they took out SD AT HOME! Did you even realize they were over .500 coming into this game undefeated at home?! Now I picked the Giants to cover like most with what was going on, but let's also realize they made some really odd mistakes and it immediately changed the game. Such as the pass in Mike Williams hands that was a td early that turned into a td the other way bc of the wr's AWFUL play. The fumble by Leon Washington that pretty much handed the Giants a td. It's football buddy, bounces NEVER always go your way and I don't think the Hawks played well by any stretch, but don't even try to act like I don't know the game when you didn't even know they didn't even play the Vikings this year. Nice work.

The Giants finally played a complete game sunday. Just awesome on all fronts. Blackmon had a nice showing in his first game as a NY Giant....had about a 30 yard return and filled in nicely for Kiwi on the end. I would have liked to see the Giants get a few sacks in that game, but it didnt' look like the plan was to all out blitz the QB.....we covered the run and forced Whitehurst to out play us and he couldn't. Nicks continues to be incredible and the Giants receiving core again showed why they are the best in the NFL. TD's for Boss, Nicks, and Smith...Manningham and Pascoe had nice catches too. Mitch Petrus is a beast. Terrell Thomas (T squared as i like to call him) had a crazy INT in the end zone and continues to be one of my favorites. its good when your team is dominating so much that the game is almost boring to watch.

Not dominate but play a complete game on all ends of the ball. O and D.
They were absolutely going to dominate the Seahawks because of how banged up the 'hawks were. But to do that to every team? I doubt it.
I can only see the Cowboys next week getting that same ass whooping. That's about it for the immediate future.
And fine...I was wrong about the Vikings (miss-saw the schedule) but 4-3 in that weak division is nothing to be proud of.
Again that was the first time I saw the Giants play a complete game on both sides of the ball. Not like the Chicago game we saw, where the D took it to them and the O didn't show up until the 4th qtr.
And did you notice that Eli FINALLY was putting passes well within reach for most of the game? Look at that Boss TD catch. Perfectly thrown ball. It was a good game for him (and everyone)

Every Game Shawn...I watch every game. And in EVERY one he throws a pick it's usually more then one. Yes the one was Nicks' fault. He blew his route. But the second one? All on Eli.
How about the fumble he caused by trying to throw the ball away vs. just falling on it?
That's not a mistake a QB with his seasoning should have, yet he does things like that time and again.
And how about the clock management. Every other game he either has a delay of game or has to call a time out because he can't get his act together?
How can YOU not see him throw over his receivers by 3 feet at least. Yes some of his INT's are not his fault....they go through the receivers hands ect. but if they didn't have to reach for the sky half the time most of those picks would be avoidable.
Look at the game in Seattle. He hit Boss in the endzone almost in the numbers. PERFECT pass and it had zero chance of being picked off. He doesn't have a throw like that half the time.
Want a perfect example? The "miracle catch" in the Super Bowl was a VERY overthrown ball that happened to be caught by our guy.

Here are some of the complete bums who have a worse rating than eli (dallas game included)
Drew Brees
Matt Ryan
Matt Schaub
Aaron Rodgers
Joe Flacco
Mark Sanchez (who everyone talks about as being awesome)
Brett Favre

im right about everything. You are attacking the one guy who hasnt really cost us games this year. And way to bring up the superbowl. You are a moron. That was a broken play thrown up for grabs, not a route that eli over threw. YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT SPORTS. EVERY QB MAKES MISTAKES LIKE THAT SOMETIMES. THE GUY WAS COMIN OFF THREE CONSECUTIVE TRIPLE DIGIT QB RATINGS. You cant do that on accident. And he is not even CLOSE to the reason we lost to dallas.
This is what people mean with yankee fans tom. You are fuckin KILLING a guy for not being the best QB in the league. He is a top ten, maybe even top 5 QB and you are killing him cause he isnt perfect on every fuckin pass. Jesus christ, learn about the shit you watch
as for the bolded part, I love your assumptions. Clock Management is not usually on the QB, its the coaching. You can act like eli takes delays of game but how do you know its not coughlin gettin the plays in too slow. You DONT KNOW, but you shoot your mouth off and make difinitive statements about it like you know.
If I was gonna list the issues with the giants this season, Eli would be at or near last on the list. I mean what the fuck do you want from the guy? at LEAST 6 of his INTs are not his fault, and even counting those 6 he has a 92 rating. Again, LOOK AT THE LIST OF GUYS HIS RATING IS BETTER THAN. By your logic, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers must be complete bums. Take away the INTs that arent eli's fault and he would be like 3rd in rating.
You are just wrong. Flat out and completely wrong
Ok...whatever.....I'm done with this conversation. You're right...you're always right, never wrong.

You think the Giants D is better than the Redskins so less points will be put up on the board?
Or do you think the Eagles D is a lesser team than the Cowboys were?

No, you'll find out the result of ONE game, not some magical formula showing the rest of the season's results. Can you give up on this whole last year is this year bullshit?
Let's also remember, Shannahan is a AWFUL head coach in terms of defensive schemes. He and his D coord were simply embarrassed last week and it won't happen this week (to NY). Look for the Giants to get pressure on Vick early and make him throw in the middle of the field into coverage. They don't need any track meets on the edge with Jackson, and they'll try to keep him contained based on it. They'll try to make Vick beat them underneath where he'll throw a few picks in my mind (first picks of the year).
It'll be a close game with the Eagles going for I think their 5th straight against the Giants, at home no less. With the NY offensive line in shambles, protection could be an issue, not to mention running the ball well. Still, it's not like the Eagles stop the run well regardless.

Also, don't underestimate the loss of Smith as a possession WR for the Giants. He usually draws a lot of underneath coverage with Boss, but now Nicks will probably see more double coverage (which still won't work).
This game will probably come down to who protects the ball better and limits big plays. Make the Eagles sustain long drives and the Giants can win. However, it'll be a tough road for the Giants.
And just wow, helmet to helmet there!? Fuck you NFL. What a bunch of shit.

Well you make really good points. The most important being that our O line is shredded with injuries and Smith being out is also a big loss. I think that played a part in the Dallas loss last week.
We need to keep Jackson contained. And you are right about the Eagles D but with our O line being what it is, to quote the name of an old band 'They might be Giants' when it comes to how they might look today.
The Giants D...yes....keep the pressure on Vick early and often. Something I didn't see that much last week.
If we keep the turnover rate to ZERO we have a fighting chance.
I'm going to be nervous this whole damn game. And I'm with you about how the blowout from last week won't happen this week (odds are) but the Eagles still looked great. Vick looks better NOW then when he played for Atlanta. He's a very well rounded QB.

im goin to elaborate a bit for you Tom, so you understand im not tryin to be a douche, just explain something.
I am not gonna act like I know NFL or am some football expert because I played in HS, but when I played I was a safety, so I did learn a few things about defending the pass.
When a QB throws a ball that goes directly to a defender, 90% of the time thats not on the QB. Most QBs in the NFL (besides delhomme and cutler and favre) are good enough to not throw it RIGHT AT defenders on accident.
Most of the time when a ball goes to a waiting DB, its cause the WR either broke wrong or broke late and was late on the route timing. So he doesnt get there and the ball goes by right to a defender. the few passes manning has had picked that werent off hands ( we can argue manning didnt throw them great, and some of those he didnt, but when a ball hits BOTH hands, thats on the receiver to catch it no matter where the ball is)id say at least 3 or 4 that I can remember we mistakes by the receiver. A couple by nicks himself. the point is just cause Eli throws a pick doesnt mean its his fault, but you always assume
to address a comment you made in teh NFL thread, on the pick in question, eli didnt look to other receivers cause it was a hot read. On a hot read, the defense does something to trigger the hot read, and the QB auto throws it to that read no matter what, like manning did on that play. The receiver has to make a play and keep samuel out, that one was NOT AT ALL on eli. The nature of the read made that call. Thats why he doesnt always look at other reads, cause some plays trigger hot reads.
Thats one of those things i tried to tell you that you just dont understand about football, and thats what makes you wrong. Its not me thinking im right, im using football facts. Its not my opinions. I hope that helps and you realize im actually tryin to make points to you
Snoogans
11-21-2010, 06:51 PM
also, on a hot read, the QB doesnt announce it, so the WR has to see the same thing and no to make the read. If the receiver doesnt make that read too, its gonna be an INT right to a defender. there is alot of reasons why those things happen, its not always on the QB. And, this season at least, most of those were not on eli
and thats coming from a guy who made a youtube video to teach Eli how to throw a ball. So trust me if he did ANYTHING worth rippin on him for, id be the first in line, and you know that. So maybe, take that to mean im tryin to make legit points

i came in here to see if tom gave any credit to Eli Manning. He did not. Despite the fact he was once again one of our best players, throwing to guys he barely throws to, and having a really good game.
GIVE HIM SOME CREDIT, PLEASE. You wanna kill him every time he does 1 bad thing, at least give him some respect the times he does good

tom, ive never seen you give him credit for anything EVER. Period. You even badmouthed him for that miracle play in the SB, sayin he overthrew it and made tyree have to make that play, even though it was just a hail mary after he broke 4 fuckin tackles.
The point is you always kill him and NEVER respect him and he is good. He is the best QB we have had since Simms at least, and very well could end up the BEST QB YOUR TEAM HAS EVER HAD PERIOD. you complain about all the things he does and he didnt do any of them and you still dont say anything. It angers me. Cause im a giants fan, and so are you, so in public, you are a representative of OUR group, and you shame us all the time.

Well...8-4. I am pleasantly surprised.
I loved how the running game looked.
D looked good. Never let up. Which is exactly what they should have done.
Even our punter had some good kicks, which I liked to see.
I just hated seeing Reynaud taking punts again. He needs to go. Don't we have ANYONE better?

Boss saved Eli with that great catch.
Once again the running game ran through EVERYONE.
It was an important win we needed and got. Especially with the travel they had to do.
Now onto the most important game of the year (so far) with the Eeekals.
