someone help pixie's comp has been fucked for months:

Plug the bastard internet in

Task bar says "Network 3 Access: Local and Internet"

Open browser (tried everyone i can find) - "Failed to connect"

Try Diagnose connection problems - "windows did not find any problems with this computers network connection"

Thing is I can log into gtalk to chat online and access updates from windows.
Every test i try says I'm connected but the browsers keep fucking with me.

Incase it matters its a Dell Inspiron 530. Vista Home Basic. Its been like this for months. Ran Malwarebytes, Spybot, Adaware and AVG Free 9.0 a few times over the months:nothing.

Any ideas much appreciated

I'm having the same problem on my home PC.
It's strange. I try and troubleshoot, reset the IP, etc. etc.

A reboot is what always cures it. When I get time to do real troubleshooting, I'll update.

Open your Start Menu, Click on 'All Programs', click on the 'Accessories' directory, then Right-click on 'Command Prompt', and left-click on 'Run as Administrator'.This will open up a Command Prompt. Type ipconfig /flushdns

Close the command prompt after that.

Open your browser, and see if you can browse. If not, click up on the Menu bar up top on 'File' and make sure that 'Work Offline' is UNCHECKED

I just tried it, Geno.
Thanks. I'll let you know if I continue to get locked out. It is sporadic.

Wait, so the windows self diagnosing tools didn't work?

diagnostics says ''windows did not find any problems with your internet connection"

can get on itunes store as well. just browsers wont play

Thanks Geno I'll try that now.

Could the fact that we're running this comp from the same modem be a problem?.. worked fine together for a few months.

It could. What you may want to do is powercycle your modem/router. Unplug it from power, and let it sit off for about 30 seconds or so. Plug it back in, and give it another try.

What could be happening is that your router/modem is set to automatically hand out IP Addresses, and an IP address that you are being handed out may be "locked" or unable to be released by the router.

Another thing you can do at the Command Prompt I mentioned before is to do the following commands:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Give those two things a try and lemme know.

In the Command Prompt, type: ping www.yahoo.com (http://www.yahoo.com)

You should either receive a Request Timed Out/Host Unreachable, or a reply from Yahoo.com (69.147.76.15).

If it is the first one, you should contact your internet service provider, because you are not receiving responses from their DNS server. DNS servers are what serve up webpages to your computer when you type them in the browser. They might be able to look into it, or we can do a workaround with some free OpenDNS server addresses.

If it is the latter, it means you are receiving responses from Yahoo.com, and it could be your browser.

What antivirus or firewall software are you running? If it is Dell, it is typicall McAfee Antivirus or McAfee Internet Security. It is possible that it is the firewall service may have received an update today, and it is glitching. Have you done a full shutdown on your computer, and tried it again?

chose one of the browsers you want to use on your desktop right click the icon and select properties
Select the Compatibility Tab and check if on the bottom under Privilege Level you are able to check off Run as Administrator
If it is not check able it already runs that way.

Also check under your control panel - internet options and select that browser as your default, if it isn't already.

you can try and disable your user account control (UAC) entirely, though that is not recommended. I did it on mine cause I had a lot of connectivity problems.

Have you tried running a browser while connected to the modem instead of wireless? If that works then your wireless router may be the issue.

Have you tried to open browser from icon inside program file folder, or start menu vs desktop short cut?

Done a full shutdown. This happened a few months ago.

Don't have any mcafee progs. using avg free 9.0 (about to transfer the most recent version to the dell. There was a Norton Internet security thing on it but I can find it now and wont let me uninstall.

even in the control panel under programs you have to right click and choose uninstall it as admin most of the stuff

Didnt work. Both comps are wired to the same modem

no option to uninstall as admin. using a prog called perfect uninstaller to remove norton. avg recommended i remove norton before installing most recent version.

try removing it from your control panel, rather than using the uninstall software. I think that software just cleans out the registry and hidden files off your computer associated with the program in addition to removing the program itself.
I completely uninstalled my Norton from vista just a few weeks ago, but to remove the internet security part it asked to have other parts uninstalled first.

or you can try their removal tool http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

as for the UAC - was it not an option to check mark or did it let you select it and then still made no difference?

I found a few more things that may be the case, one is a windows update that caused the errors you mention. you would need to uninstall that one if it is on her machine
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947864

resetting winsock may be another fix for the issue http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/18/repair-and-reset-windows-vista-tcpip-winsock-catalog-corruption/

When Winsock corrupts, the networking errors that you may face include unable to surf the Internet with “Page cannot be displayed” error message in Internet Explorer or AOL even though the DSL/ADSL/cable Internet connection is connected. Sometimes, Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service is terminated as well.

would try the last one first... good luck, hope this one resolves it

I didn't read the whole thing but I believe I encountered the same issue the other day on one of my user accounts although this one, on the same computer, works fine.

I must've gotten some kind of virus the other day because I was unable to do anything. No Task Manager ( it closed itself out ), even Control+Alt+Delete was disabled.

Somehow McAfee kicked in and said it found a virus, Archemedies or something, and told me it was removing it.

I rebooted and I was able to do everything again except use IE to access webpages.

Again no problem on another identity so I tried getting a newer version of IE and that didn't work either.

I'm shown as connected w/ excellent reception and I can send/receive emails so I'm not sure what it is.

What is the " winsock " solution that may help ?

What about running safe mode with networking, then trying the browser.

Has to be a firewall/security issue.

I re did my os and my browser would not connect. When I clicked the icon in start menu it worked. Or sometimes had to use the one in the program folder. Now the desktop icon works fine.

I ended up just creating a new identity on the computer and everything's good to go.

I think that other identity was loaded w/ nonsense that appeared to slow it down anyway.
