I figure if anyone knows, you guys would.

Being a Ca. coastal native, I've always wanted to see rocky, eastern fishing villages. I honestly don't know S about the area.. Of course I could choose a name that's been glamorized like 'Nantucket' or 'cape cod' and try to go from there... But anyone with a little bit of experience knows there are jewels that are not completely over trodden by the masses and the only way to find them is ask.

It can be from Maine to wherever. Our Target date is April.

Cheers!! and Thanks.

Depends on what you like to do. When I lived in Connecticut, I took my Mom to Newport, Rhode Island because she loved to tour mansions. It's a nice town, but you couldn't spend a week there. Mystic is nice--but do you have kids? Want to fish? See whales?

I'm sure someone who's an East Coast native will be more help. Have fun and let us know what you decide to do!

Anywhere on the coast of Maine would work.

In Massachusetts, probably Gloucester or Rockport.

Or you can see a "rocky" whaling city and go to the glorious city of New Bedford (don't).

Me and my lady, no kids, no fishing. We probably want to go to historical sites, eat decent food, walk through shops and stay in a clean quiet location. We don't mind day trips in a car.

I just read an article about day tripping through Eastern Mass. It seemed very cool, but it also seemed like it was on the beaten path for sure.

I love Eastern Mass (I'm biased).

The Cape is nice, if you go to the right places. Some areas are just boring or methy.

Boston is also always a great city to visit. It's tiny, so you can see a lot.

the maine coast is the best
camden, rockport, kennebunkport

i would just drive up and down
and spend each night in a different place

huge problem: April is still
freezing cold in Maine

Long Beach Island and Cape May in Southern NJ. I've never been to Cape May but I heard they have a really nice ferry ride to Delaware.

Damn, Early april is my only date. Maine might be too much.

Sounds like Rockport Cloucester Boston might be the spot... I suspect it's colder than here, but not too bad? Is Boston a day trip from Gloucester?

Is it better to have boston a home base or a spot on the coast?

Boston is cold, but usually not too bad. April is a weird month, weather wise.

Boston to Gloucester is like 45 minutes by car or train.

I'd use Boston (I'd actually suggest Cambridge) as the home base. It's centralized, sort of, on the Mass coast and there's plenty to do.

If you start looking for hotels, let me know which ones. I'll let you know if you should avoid them or not. If you're willing to pay a little bit, there are some beautiful boutique hotels in the Boston/Cambridge area.

Yeah, I think it was like 70 on April 1st in 2008 and we had a blizzard on April 1st in 2007.

Agreed.

Go to Boston, it's a great City. Historic, clean, tons of things to see and not far from rural areas and water.

Hotel Marlowe is beautiful. Great bar, too. It's one of the really nice boutique hotels I was talking about. Their rates are relatively low for April, too (my mother-in law is coming out here and it's near my home so I've been checking rates).

It's not "near" anything, but it's a very short cab or train ride into Boston.

If you're looking for other places, check out Hotel Nine Zero, 15 Beacon and the Liberty Hotel. They get pretty pricey depending on the time, though. But they're all really, really nice hotels.

Also, all these and the Hotel Marlowe are cool hotels. So you can have nice and cool.

Are you locked into New England?

The Chesapeake Bay area is fantastic, and has plenty of small towns to explore, plus Annapolis, with Baltimore & DC nearby. Plus the weather would probably be much better in early April.

This is true too.

And to plug my home state of CT, Mystic is pretty "authentic" I suppose.

We are not locked in.

The perfect situation is to get into a nice spa/hotel where she can work out, eat well, and relax... but, day trip into cool little towns, historic spots, art galleries, restaurants, museums..

well, if you like that
the eastern shore of MD is great
spend a day in annapolis
on the western shore
and then go over the bridge (delightful)
and spend the rest of the week
at st.michaels from where you can
do day trips to crisfield, oxford
cambridge and easton

if you get ambitious, you can
drive east about 50 miles and
see the atlantic at rehoboth,
ocean city, or best of all
go down to chincoteague and hope
to see the wild ponies

it will be much warmer than maine,
however, you will not see a rocky coast
in fact, you won't even see a rock
