is that I can't just be like "Hey, I feel like listening to some electronic music" and select Genres-> Electronic on my iPod. Same with "Rock" or even "Punk".

I'm sorry, I get that bands combine genres and good bands like to defy convention, but can't we all agree that Ubermetal-Alterna-Techo-Fusion-Rock can probably be broken down to it's most common denominator when we are making our fucking ID3 tags and uploading our music to be pirated??

Currently painstakingly going through my collection to simplify genres.

Maybe I'm just an oddly emotionally-driven music listener. When I hear a song it either feels good with my mood or it doesn't, and a good 75% of the time the compatibility is genre-based

Maybe I should just listen to my whole music collection in 30-second samples and categorize them all based on abstract and subjective definitions of my moods. It would be a huge pain in the ass that took a week but when it was done I could just be in my car and hit Genres->Wistfully Optimistic about Death and hear the right songs.

I dunno, I'm a big metal fan and there are definite times I feel more in the mood for black metal than death or speed metal, it's kinda nice to have the genre options a little more specific for me. I actually have the opposite problem where most stuff gets lumped under a generic "metal" title that I need to go and reclassify.

Or you could just assign multiple genres to your music, that way they show up under a general genre, as well as a more specific one.

Yeah just one would be enough. And it does help to skip over BS albums you don't want. It's hard to tell from the title or cover pics most times.
