Honestly! If your vehicle starts to rev uncontrollably wouldn't it be fairly obvious to just put it into neutral before this happens? Logic first, pray later.

i have been thinking about that, i was on the Turnpike yesterday going about 80, in my Camry, i easily slipped it into Neutral and then back into drive without an issue. these people are dumb.

People who drive Camrys are self important cocksuckers. The entire world revolves around them. Not signaling lane changes, riding the brake, improper parking, all trademarks of the Camry driver. They are too wrapped up in #1 to even consider it.

I am on my second Camry. I love them, but I am not cocky nor think they are the best ever. I do think they are very reliable and know that if I had this problem that I would shift into neutral too. I may get an Audi after this. Or else a Lexus. The Audi seems like a cheaper version of a Mercedes, but still is plush and nimble. I am not a fan of the current Camry body style. I have a 2003. It still is nice looking.

really asshole? do you know how long it takes to hit 120? you couldnt figure out neutral or even applying the brakes? dumbasses.
a blown motor is cheaper to fix (especially on the company's dime) than well, dead.

California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Saylor, a 19 year veteran of a well respected department, was trained in emergency response. He responded in the best manner possible to protect himself and his family. Despite his best efforts, he and three other family members were victims of senseless and preventable deaths.
As a result of the Saylor investigation, the NHTSA reported that:
it would require 150 pounds of pressure applied to the brake to override acceleration and stop the vehicle,
that there was no warning indicating that the engine start-stop button installed in this Lexus must be held for three seconds to shut off, and
neutral was hard to find on the shifter.
Evidence taken from the scene confirmed that brake pressure had been applied for a continued amount of time.
Let's not call the 19-year EVOC-trained Highway Patrol veteran an asshole when he was driving a loaner car that he had never driven before in Friday evening traffic (6:30 PM) on a busy freeway in San Diego. If you put yourself in his position, you probably wouldn't have done much better.

highway patrol? should he not have been trained in emergency response? if anything, i would think that he would have been cool and calm and worked this out. especially after 19 years.
loaner car? gas pedal, brake pedal are still in same position as his regular car. and shifting to neutral still stops the engine. if he had time to look down and read the speedometer and comprehend that he was doing 120, then he had time to react and stop the truck.

figure that you are doing 80mph tops. at what point do you realize that your car keeps accelerating? at 85? 90? 95?
to go from 80 to 120 takes a long time. more than enough to react and regain control of your vehicle.

I drive a standard which makes it easy to do something if this happens (just engaged the clutch) but if I was in an automatic and it happened I don't think calling 911 would be something that I would think to do.
The other good thing about driving a standard is that fewer and fewer people know how to drive one so it's less likely to get stolen.

The position of the pedals is not the issue. Witnesses reported that the tires were on fire, which means that the guy was hammering the brakes to the point where they ignited. If you read the quote I posted, it stated that neutral was difficult to find on the stick, and that the push-button ignition needed to be held for three seconds to shut the motor off. He wasn't used to the vehicle, so in an emergency situation, it would be easy to give up on finding neutral or shutting the motor off after it didn't work the first time, especially when you are in rush hour traffic and your accelerator is stuck.

Again, it's easy to second-guess the guy, but I have trouble believing he was some inept asshole who failed miserably under slightly-stressful conditions.

2) Unfamiliar loaner car
3) Friday 6:30 PM on Hwy 125 in San Diego
4) 270 hp motor in a sedan
5) Hard to find neutral
6) Push-button shutoff needed to be held for 3 seconds
7) DEFECTIVE VEHICLE
If you've never been in a critical, life-threatening incident, it's hard to understand, but you can't really apply normal, hindsight logic to it.

pretty standard on all vehicles. since it was a lexus, they may have had one of those fancy "manu-matic" trannys, but even still. if you cant figure it out, or dont want to take your hands off the wheel, then your passenger can jiggle the stick however. you do what you have to do to stop the vehicle.
if you had time to realize that your car will not slow down, and call 911, then you had time to find neutral. end. story.
sorry if it makes me come across as an asshole, but im not buying into the story. i guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
