Dunno, doesn't do it for me. I've played around with tablet PC's before and they're a novelty that get tiresome quickly. Too big to comfortably carry around, the touch screen makes it awkward to do anything more than light typing. Could be way off but don't see this filling any particular niche.

What's the staggered-release customer leeching strategy for this one? There's got to be some piece of widely available tech that they will inexplicably not include in the initial versions so they can double their sales in a year with a new version.

Key thing about ATT... no contracts for the 3G. That kinda scares me and wonder what Jobs had to do in order for that to work. If it means another exclusive contract for ATT for the Iphone, I'll be upset.

I don't know abou that. I just got the 64g iTouch. I knew this was coming out, but knowing Apple, I knew that they wouldn't have a 64G version, or if they did it would be much too expensive to get the tablet version.

The size and portability of the iPod Touch will still be an advantage over this. I don't know if I'd want to haul an iPad around all the time.

The other thing is that I think that it's smart of Apple to not tie the 3G to a plan. That way, I think a lot of people will go ahead and pick up the one with 3G right away, even if they aren't sure they'll be using it right away.

The physical size doesn't bother me as much. Even on weekends, I often carrying around a messenger bag with me wherever I go, to carry my Touch, Blackberry, a book, reading glasses, stuff for my kids, etc. (Go ahead with the jokes). I could carry it in there easily.

I think he is referring to the fact that Verizon has stated that tethering is capable, but not accepted. Verizon claims that they have a way to know if you are tethering and will charge you the 60 dollar wireless plan they sell for desktops and laptops. I think they are full of shit. They only way they can suspect tethering is by large usage which would be no different than if you used something like Pandora all day which is accepted.

My god, am I underwhelmed by the iPad. This is as inessential a product as I've ever seen, but beyond that, it has some absolutely backbreaking failures that will make me judge anyone who buys one. Updated

Big, Ugly Bezel
Have you seen the bezel on this thing?! It's huge! I know you don't want to accidentally input a command when your thumb is holding it, but come on.

No Multitasking
This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.

No Cameras
No front facing camera is one thing. But no back facing camera either? Why the hell not? I can't imagine what the downside was for including at least one camera. Could this thing not handle video iChat?

Touch Keyboard
So much for Apple revolutionizing tablet inputs; this is the same big, ugly touchscreen keyboard we've seen on other tablets, and unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use.

No HDMI Out
Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.

The Name iPad
Get ready for Maxi pad jokes, and lots of 'em!

No Flash
No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.

Adapters, Adapters, Adapters
So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adapters. You need an adapter for USB for god's sake.

Update: Why stop at 8? Here are more things we are discovering that suck about the iPad.

It's Not Widescreen
Widescreen movies look lousy on this thing thanks to its 4:3 screen, according to Blam, who checked out some of Star Trek on one. It's like owning a 4:3 TV all over again!

Doesn't Support T-Mobile 3G
Sure, it's "unlocked." But it won't work on T-Mobile, and it uses microSIMs that literally no one else uses.

It's already here (http://www.adobe.com/devnet/devices/articles/htchero.html) if you have the right phone. I, of course do.

I have pretty much relegated my Touch to the Bose base. Everything I need and more is on my droid. I even have a good chunk of my music on there. If I can figure out how to sync the phone with iTunes, I'm good to go.

I also love how Apple is once again staggering the releases of features they already have in the can, and the fools just keep buying into it.
They are a pretty scummy company in my book.

I'm wondering if this will be the death blow, or at least seriously hurt, the Kindle. Because the 16GB iPad will be only slightly more expensive than the Kindle DX, and do many other things than just read books.

Now, I think that the experience of reading a book in e-ink is probably better, in a lot of ways, than looking at it on a LED screen, but they haven't figured out a way to play my Asa Akira videos on an e-ink screen yet, so the iPad does have that advantage.

Now, I think that the experience of reading a book in e-ink is probably better, in a lot of ways, than looking at it on a LED screen, but they haven't figured out a way to play my Asa Akira videos on an e-ink screen yet, so the iPad does have that advantage.

iPad will definitely eat into it's market but I don't think it'll be all that severe. It'll take the casual Kindle users but the hardcores won't go for the significant drop in battery life.

Actually, I didn't even realize it, but my HTC version of Android does support some flash stuff, just not everything.

I don't think that there's much of an excuse for Flash to not be on the iPhone, and certainly not the iPad, but at the same time, Flash can DIAF as far as I'm concerned. I switched my YouTube player on Chrome to use HTML5 instead of Flash, and damn does it run better.

Yeah, if someone wants something exclusively for reading, they'll probably want the Kindle instead. But for the casual customer, the fact the iPad is only slightly more expensive (at least the basic model) might sway them that way.

From what the article said, this weighs quite a lot more than the Kindle and is awkward to hold for long periods of time. Its an inch thick. The Kindle is less I believe and half the weight. I bet this eats into the Kindles market share, but not to true readers. I imagine there will be people who will have both too. I actually find reading books on my iPod Touch to be pretty neat, even though its small.

The amount of wrong info in tech threads here is scary.

One, apple refuses to include flash in the iphone sdk, it has nothing to do with adobe disliking apple...thats one of the dumbest statements ive ever heard, to think that adobe isnt dying to be on the millions of iphones out there is ridiculous.

An inch thick, wtf? Half an inch thick and weighs 1.5lbs...

Think of the low end model as an ereader on steroids, instead of carrying a kindle and a ipod you can just carry this. Do i want one? But im not dumb enough to not see the market for it.

And im sure multi tasking will come with os 4.0.

I'm not an Apple hater, I have an iPod. I don't hate the iPhone, I would probably have one if Apple wasn't stupid and didn't sign with AT&T only.

But I just don't see this thing blowing up, and really, it's not breaking any new ground here.

It's way too expensive so I don't believe it's going to take much of the Kindle and similar reader market.

It won't multitask so it's just not any kind of netbook replacement.

It looks nice and I'm sure it's gonna be popular at 1st but I can't see people running out for this one. $499 is the barebones model with no 3G, and that's way too expensive with only 16gigs of HD space.

Not impressed, sorry. They've got a great idea there, in a few generations it will be perfected.

And a reasonable price.

It looks like Apple is continuing to impose restrictions on their devices that limit both content publishers and consumers. Unlike many other ebook readers using the ePub file format, consumers will not be able to access ePub content with Apple's DRM technology on devices made by other manufacturers. And without Flash support, iPad users will not be able to access the full range of web content, including over 70% of games and 75% of video on the web.

If I want to use the iPad to connect to Disney, Hulu, Miniclip, Farmville, ESPN, Kongregate, or JibJab -- not to mention the millions of other sites on the web -- I'll be out of luck. .

Ok first of all is this being marketed as an ereader or slate netbook? I ask this because multitasking should be a given. It is ridiculous that this is not included. I'm almost sure apple did this so that they could charge iPod touch users for the OS 4.0 upgrade. This is once again apple releasing purposely half baked products (software wise) in order to charge their loyal fanbase (think iPod touch and OS 3.0 with bluetooth capability). The touch had the chip built in but apple figured they could charge $10 a pop for a minor update and a shitty bluetooth stack (A2DP only).

So you think that Apple would intentionally leave an important feature out of their major new product, one whose failure would harm them greatly and whose success would give them a major new revenue stream, so they could chisel ten bucks out of some existing customers?

The top left is a keyboard dock, and there's a case that can be used to have it sit upright as well, and you could pair a bluetooth keyboard.

Still, though, I agree; neither would work as well for real work as an actual laptop. But Apple did make the point that this isn't supposed to be a laptop replacement, and they are not marketing it as such.

Yeah, whether or not you can get a 802.11n signal is based on the hardware of the wi-fi card, not software. So what does this mean?

And let me also make this point: Mac users probably paid a hell of a lot more for their Macs than most people paid for their iPod Touches (though the cost of a top of the line iPod Touch and a bottom of the line Mac Mini isn't that far off), and they aren't giving those people 10.6 for free. And for that matter, has Microsoft sent you a free copy of Windows 7 yet? But in both cases, the same arguments that OS 3.0 for iPhone/iPod touch just adds functions that should have always been there applies to both OS X 10.6 and Windows 7.

I do think charging iPod Touch owners for updates is kind of chintzy, but it's kind of SOP here.

Why The iPad Is Crap Futurism (http://io9.com/5458822/why-the-ipad-is-crap-futurism)

Excellent article on why you should think twice about jumping for the latest potential fad.

I know a lot of otherwise-savvy consumers and hackers who are already drooling over the iPad and putting in their orders. They hate the idea of a restricted device, but they love the shiny-shiny.

KnoxHarrington

I think a lot of the people who say this thing will flop have lost touch with how most people use their computers, or what they want out of them. They judge the worth of a computer by its processor clock speed, or how many expansion ports you have, or how many drives you've got in your RAID array, etc. etc.

There are tons of people out there already using the iPhone as a computer. It does what they want a computer for: it gets them on the Internet, it gets their email. The iPad will serve that market better, because it's bigger, it'll do more things (well, not at the same time), and it'll do them better.

This is not a device for anyone who posts in this thread, I imagine, unless you just want one to carry around. This is for people who want to do some things a computer does, but hate computers, and even the supposedly more user-friendly Mac overwhelms them.

Work tech support a while and you'll find the iPad's market: people who buy a computer to get on the Internet, and let it get clogged up with spyware and viruses. They will want a no-maintenance, no fuss machine. Of course, it's restricted as hell, imposing much of Apple's will on its users. But I think that's not a problem for the big majority of users.

It's depressing, and I agree with the article Furtherman linked above. It's like Apple is telling that chick with the hammer from the 1984 ad to go fuck off, and it's Steve Jobs up on that screen we're all staring at now. But I think many more people want that than you think.

I bought one today, and it's fantastic. The only negatives I have so far are minor - mainly that you can't charge it through your computer. The kindle app is a huge improvement over the itouch, and while Apple's book selection currently leaves a bit to be desire iBooks is pretty cool. Netflix on demand, and the ABC ap, are also great. Oh yeah, the MLB ap is also a huge step up from the iTouch version.

i'm probably still going to use my iTouch as a music player, but other than that this is what I'll haul around (especially after I root my droid to use as a wifi hot spot).

Geohot isn't on the dev-team. These guys are the legit http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
They release better jailbreak software. These guys don't talk about when they will release stuff they just do it, It will happen soon they don't mess around.

Sometimes Geohot will release jailbreaks quicker than then the dev-team but they are buggy as hell. Geohot is basically all about coming up with a way to do it and then won't do it to try and prove a point to other people. While The Dev-Team will create jailbreak software for the good of the "community"

Are you using a PC? If so, try the USB ports on the back. Those usually have more juice than the ones on the front. And you can also try a USB hub that's plugged in.

I got to play around with one today, and, yeah, it kicks ass. Now, I wasn't in a place with a wi-fi spot, so I coudln't go online, but I love the iPod app on it, and I love that in landscape mode, I can pretty much type normally (and in portrait I can type pretty well.) I love the photo app as well; much better way to deal with pics.

Yeah, this thing rocks. I'll have one for myself soon.

I doubt it can. It has nothing to do with it being a PC or a Mac. It has to do with the output of the USB port. Macs have higher powered USB ports than most PC's.

No Flash, which I'm torn about. It does make a lot of sites I'd go to appear incorrectly, but at the same time, a lot of sites seem to be moving to HTML5 now because of this, and anything that gets us away from that bloated shitware is fine with me.

The iPhone OS has been able to display PDF's since the beginning.

Why would you need to stay within the radius of your router? The basic model just needs any wifi connection for any of those programs I listed before. The version coming out in three weeks has a 3g connection with no contract.

I hope that the model Apple and AT&T have come up with for 3G pricing on these devices becomes the standard.

That said, I hope that eventually 3G (or 4G) functionality becomes standard on these things, not an option.

You CAN dump a bunch of MP4's on it. Air Video is for those that either 1). have too much shit on their iPad/iTouch to store more vids or 2). have videos in non-Apple formats. It's like the Simplify audio app but it's for video material. I don't see what's so ridiculous about it.

Yeah, same here...I'd either rather wait for AT&T to get off its ass and allow tethering, or even looking into getting the MyFi thing from Sprint instead.

Like I said, I think it's in the best interests of both Apple and AT&T that all models of the iPad have 3G in them, eventually. And I love that you don't need a contract to use 3G on this phone.

As for the "Well, you'll just have to buy a new one in a year"...This doesn't feel like the iPhone situation did to me. The first iPhone was pretty heavily gimped in a lot of ways -- no 3G access, for one thing. It was missing very important features that really impacted its performance. The iPad is missing some things, most notably the camera, but I'm not sure that I'd want to use this as a camera, given its size. About the only practical use for the camera on it I can see is video conferencing,a nd that's not that importnat to me, unless I decide that I would like to show my junk on Chatroulette when I'm not at home. The lack of multitasking is annoying, but that can be resolved by software, and all indications are that iPhone OS 4.0 is going to do that.

So I'm not seeing anything missing from this that would make me shy away from it to the same degree that I shied away from the first generation iPhone. That said, I don't have one yet, and it'll be a while before I get one.

By the wya, here is Apple's official word on what formats are supported:

Audio playback
Frequency response: 20Hz to 20,000Hz
Audio formats supported: HE-AAC (V1), AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV
User-configurable maximum volume limit
TV and video
Support for 1024 by 768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter; 576p and 480p with Apple Component AV Cable; 576i and 480i with Apple Composite AV Cable
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Mail attachment support
Viewable document types: .jpg, .tiff, .gif (images); .doc and .docx (Microsoft Word); .htm and .html (web pages); .key (Keynote); .numbers (Numbers); .pages (Pages); .pdf (Preview and Adobe Acrobat); .ppt and .pptx (Microsoft PowerPoint); .txt (text); .rtf (rich text format); .vcf (contact information); .xls and .xlsx (Microsoft Excel)

As long as it's H.264, it should pretty much work. Some conversion might be required to get the size for the screen right, but I'm not aware of any other player/smartphone that doesn't have that issue too.

That's why I love AirVideo. It takes about 30 seconds of buffering to begin converting, and then plays perfectly. I don't have to waste space on the player, and between my 3 computers (including work) I have a ton of shit at my disposal. some places i will say at&t has leverage over vzw, but not many.

my area, but it's not a very populated one. there are a lot of places where i get 3 or 4 bars of service where vzw has zero coverage.

2. Is form factor the only thing you AAPL fanboys care about?

I'll start with 2. first

I'm not an apple fanboy.

As for 1., the droid's keyboard STINKS ON ICE. It's one of the main reasons why I didn't get the droid.

I'm not anti-Android or anti-Droid. It's just the keyboard doesn't work for my needs.

The shape, size, and functionality of the external area of the phone.

If a phone is bulky, heavy, or has a bad keyboard, it detracts from the form factor.

instead you went with a heavier phone(which i dont know how that possible as the droid is pretty heavy(but it doesnt really matter)), less CPU speed, smaller display, windows 6.1(maybe you have the update), maybe a worse camera, but you do have a nicer keyboard.

fair enough.
